I haven't played the game before. All it does is when I double click the icon it loads up a black screen, then flickers, and then minimizes and shuts down. I've done everything from reinstalling windows, reinstalling the game itself, and defragmented my computer but it hasn't helped. I don't know what else to do.

Btw: temporarily disable antivirus application before installing any software.
And right-click on any downloaded file > properties > hit button "unblock".

Yes there could be left over from it. After uninstalling DM from Steam, usually the game folder (directory + contents) just stay. And, of course, the registry key. You should get rid of it all before attempting to make a clean install of the DVD version.

I described exactly the steps for uninstalling the game from Steam (and then reinstalling DVD version) in DARK MESSIAH Installation and Troubleshooting Instructions [POST 3] please follow it to the letter and don't skip one step!

Please realise: it is not complicated at all, yet it comes very exact. I mean, there is NO reason to get a headache over this but just use logic, the remains must be totally erased as they screw up a new installation. You have the DVD version, well make Steam so as if it has never seen the game before. And when you start installing you tick off multiplayer to keep Steam quiet for the moment.

After installing, on the background, Steam will detect the presence of the game and (re-)create the registry key. This is only welcome, but this must be the ONLY finger Steam puts in the singleplayer installation of DVD version DM.

Is this still with the DVD version on? If so, you want Steam to move the files?

find the file binkw32.dll in your
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Dark Messiah of Might and Magic\bin
folder, and copy & paste it into the main directory:
C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Dark Messiah of Might and Magic.

(If you can't find it, you can also copy it from your own DVD: DMOMMGC\Disk1\Support\arch\bin\binkw32.dll, or download and unzip binkw32.zip, it's the same file.)
