I cannot figure this out for the life of me. I have all my setting to default in the control panel. I have also tried various different drivers. Currently using 158.27 WHQL

Basically what happens is the fps will drop as if it is a memory leak error. I will play the game and after about a minute my fps will drop to almost single digits!

Now this only seems to happen with the steam version. i got the game free with my POV 8800GTS and the disc version seems to run fine. However I hate having to put in the cd everytime, plus the cd version fails to launch a lot of the time.

Any ideas why my fps will drop like this?

C2D E6600
2GB RAM
8800GTS

Hello Gamergod.

Please provide the following info:

1. >>> Post your dxdiag report:

Windows XP/2000:
Click Start > Run... type in
dxdiag
click OK.
Select to Save All Information. Open the file in Notepad, select all, copy then paste the complete text into your next reply.

Windows Vista:
In the Search box (just above the Start button) type:
dxdiag
hit Enter.
Select to Save All Information. Open the file in Notepad, select all, copy then paste the complete text into your next reply.

2. >>> Copy the settings for the SP game from the Source entry in Registry.

Click Start > Run... type in
regedit
click OK.
Navigate to the key
[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Source\mm]
you see in the picture below, and highlight it.

Right-click on the key > Export...
In the Name box, type for instance:
Valve_Source_mm-key
In the Filetype box leave it at 'Registryfile (*.reg)'.
Click Save.
It is now saved into the My Documents folder.

In My Documents folder, find this .reg file.
Right-click on it > Open with... select Notepad. Put your cursor in the text, select all then copy and paste it into your next reply.

There seems to be an issue with 8800s in certain games (maybe it's just the latest drivers causing the problem?) and this one seems to be one of them. Try this, press ALT-TAB and then go back into the game. Other people on nvnews noticed this increased the framerate dramatically.

Application Issues
• General Antialiasing Problem with Top Games
We have found that some games running under Windows Vista enable 16x coverage sampling antialiasing (CSAA) when 4xAA is selected in the game menu, resulting in deflated performance on GeForce 8800 cards.
The problem occurs with NVIDIA Vista drivers 100.54 and later.
The same effect will occur in future Release 100 Windows XP drivers.
Affected applications found to date include:
• Battlefield 2
• Battlefield 2142
• Sin Episodes
• Half-Life 2
• Half-Life 2 Lost Coast
To set standard 4xAA in these applications, please set 4xAA in the game, and also enable “Enhance the application” antialiasing mode with a 4x antialiasing setting in the NVIDIA graphics driver control panel.
We are working with developers to implement better in‐game CSAA support. You can see CSAA menu selections in Half-Life 2: Episode One and Supreme Commander.

I hope this helps. Smile

Thank you for digging that info up BlindNero, it solved half the problem for me (the performance dropping after 5 seconds into the game) and the game is now playable. Now if the initial performance became more reasonable for beast like 8800GTX... hehehe

Your welcome BlindNero Smile

After more playing I can definitely say this is one of the major reason why performance drops like a rock for my 8800GTX, but sadly it doesn't seem to be the only reason. Following the instruction (setting 4x AA via enhance mode) now makes the game playable for about 15 minutes, big improvement from previous 15 seconds, but the performance still slowly degrade overtime into the inevitable. Then again, I am using Vista 64 so for me there are too many possible causes for the performance hit over time...

Umm.. well: how much RAM do you have? I am interested to know whether the crashes of this game on Vista have anything to do with Vista's superfetching functionality occupying/bottlenecking the RAM. Vista 64-bit starts with 4 GB RAM as minimum so i am hoping you have more than that?

I actually have exactly 4 gigs of ram. And wow, I didn't know that was the official minimum! I guess I just learned something new.

The whole PC spec is
E6600
EVGA 8800GTX
EVGA 680i SLI mobo
4 gigs of Kingston value ram with blue heatsinks
200 gigs Seagate HD
600 watt PSU from Silverstone

Another observation I have made is that when I change the video settings, the FPS jumps back to normal, but sadly the goodness only last for 20 seconds.

Sorry for the triple post but I don't see an edit button... anyways, I tried disabling superfetch but it didn't change anything so I'm clueless...

Edit: damn the new 163.11 driver doesn't do anything to this problem...

Edit: another fun discovery. Using the DVD version, the slowdown is gone but now Vista doesn't seem to like DMoMM as DEP shut the game down lol

I having what appears to be the same problem with a 6600GT. I get good performance (20 to 30 FPS) then the game suddenly turns into a slideshow. I've found that quicksaving and then quickloading will temporarily remedy this problem, but it's only a few minutes before I'm back to single digit framerates. I'm running the Steam version as well.

I was hoping to find a solution here, but it's somewhat comforting to know that I'm not the one having this issue.

This is on Windows XP, latest nVidia drivers (94.24), and latest version of the game.

I have no idea what's causing the slowdowns, but it's making the game impossible to play.

Well, seeing as the problem does not appear to be restricted to the 8800GTS, I'm guessing it's either the video drivers or something specific to the Steam version.
