1. Yes. First time I launched game after install I reached half-way through tutorial map before game crashed.

2. Yes, I turned around to see if there was anything behind me.

3. The game crashes by continuously looping the last half a second of whatever is in the sound buffer along with complete freeze of controls and screen. After about 30 seconds my LCD monitor says there is no input and goes into standby mode. About 30 seconds after that XP desktop returns with an error message about DX9 or mm.exe (50/50 as to which one). 30 seconds after clicking on OK do I regain complete control of the windows desktop enviroment.

At present I am unable to load a saved game as the above occurs. Sometimes I cannot reach the main menu. If I attempt to play other games after a MM crash (e.g. Company of Heroes) those games also do not load. The only way for me to restore functionality to my other games after MM crashes is to re-install forceware drivers v93.71 and reboot PC.

4. Yes, 2. One read similarly to this: "The instruction at "0x241e1f49" referenced memory at "0x0de665c8". The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate program"

On other seemingly random occasions I get: "Internal driver error in IDirect3DDevice9::Present()"

5. Yes. On 2nd November to Foreware v93.71.

6. AMD Athlon 64 3200 2ghz, 1 gb ram, Nvidia 6800 with 512 mb ram.

7. I am exclusively playing the DVD version.

8. Regretably not.

1. Ocassionally... ya, I had tried 1 or 2 out of 10 tries and ge into the menu... but can never start a new game.

2. Simply... check the setting, without changing anything, and start a new game, but everythings became a black screen for ages and I had no choice other than a force reboot.

3. After all begining cinematic, before the game menu comes out, I got a pretty "memory cannot be read" error and then that excellent directX error box. For the luckly occasion that I could press the "New Game" option, it's simply a black screen.

4. Yes, as said in 3, the same "memory cannot be read" error and directX error box ppls were talking about all over the time in this forum. None message I could dig out for the black screen after the "New game" option.

5. Yup, ForceWare 93.71, WHQL Certified, dated 2/11/2006.

6. "Old" computer... = =.. I admit.
CPU: Pentium 4 3.2G HT (538)
RAM: 1G MB DDR400
Video Card: Nvidia 7900GS (AGP)
Video Card Memory: 256MB DDR

7. DVD version... I'd never success to download the 7G files from stream.

8. Yup... I even tried to change my desktop setting to 1024x768 to test. There is no hope.

A little update from my case... a strange case may be.

Having noted a release on the NGO optimized driver over ForceWare 93.71, I give it a try. Oh, great, I got into the menu safely eventually. For this success, so, I immediately go into the option and tune down the setting in Video. Leaving the details level as high (it's recommented setting), and set HDR setting to bloom mapping, turn off AA. Ok, new game...

wow, I entered the game!! walking around smoothly... i start to tune up back everything in game... it appeared ok. After that, i try to restart the game. What the hell... same thing happened again. I can't enter the game. After reboot again and try to tune down back everythings, it worked again.

By several further attempts, it seems that I can't run the game with any higher setting. So I start the game with low setting and give it a try... oh wait... why.. no sound? I feel strange and turn on the captions... well.. I found that there is no vocal sound... all effect and background music is ok... but not the vocal.

Great... forum search again...

Bye2 you must feel ****ed after that... what exactly did you do to enter the game for the first time?

I dunno if this helps but this is copied from my error log... and as I said Shaderapidx9.dll is the file that appears to be failing

"<EXE NAME="shaderapidx9.dll" FILTER="GRABMI_FILTER_THISFILEONLY">
<MATCHING_FILE NAME="shaderapidx9.dll" SIZE="598016" CHECKSUM="0x49D1A559" MODULE_TYPE="WIN32" PE_CHECKSUM="0x0" LINKER_VERSION="0x0" LINK_DATE="10/24/2006 17:29:02" UPTO_LINK_DATE="10/24/2006 17:29:02" />
</EXE>"

I was able to enter the game in the very 1st time after a fresh installation. Enter the game menu, watching for the video option. I accepted all the recommended setting except to put 4xAA on. I happily start the new game but... all I had a black screen. At 1st I though it's 'cos of the loading time, but... 30 min passed... I gave up and reboot. Then, I could never start the game to the menu by all means: reisntall display drive, the game an directx... no hope at all before the NGO driver...

I got same message as harrier before i installed the NGO driver:
quote:
4. Yes, 2. One read similarly to this: "The instruction at "0x241e1f49" referenced memory at "0x0de665c8". The memory could not be read. Click OK to terminate program"

On other seemingly random occasions I get: "Internal driver error in IDirect3DDevice9::Present()"

Not same case as ATI.. I think...

After started with the NGO driver, all I'd done was putting some *recommended* setting down... like HDR to use bloom mapping instead of full, turn water reflect to off, shadow to low, AA to none. remaining texture details are in recommended high. It's ok up to my progress now passed the prolog to chapter 1... except the vocal Sad

The most funny is... I can turn the setting back in game = =;;

[edit]
oh 1 thing... something strange in the option that... before the NGO driver, the directx level in the option contains both 9.0 and 9.0c for selection. But after installed the NGO driver, only 9.0 is available.... is this a hint? Sad

I think you may try to use NGO's optimized driver for ATI:
http://www.ngohq.com/home.php?page=Files&go=cat&dwn_cat_id=9

I can enter the game menu only after I have installed their optimized driver for Nvidia.

1 thing I feel strange is... there is no 9.0c options for me to choose in the option after using the NGO driver... may be you could try to use the "-dxlevel 90" option to force it to go in the menu. I think there's some stupid bugs on the graphic checking in the game engine may be, making the game can't load.

Now I can even play in high GFX and texture details... by some tricky way: after entered the game menu, or before quitting the gamepreviously, tune down the texture, GFX, water, shadow, AA, AF and HDR to the lowest. Load the game save, then tune up every things after the game is loaded... It works perfectly... now I'm in chapter 3.. Razz

btw... but the vocal problem solved by installing the update driver for my audigy 4... ^^; never noted a driver update for sound card before. I don't think there is much done by the 1.01 patch other then setting the default texture lv to medium....

I bought it on Steam, The SP worked fine (bit of stutter here and there but it worked), Finished level 3, during loading (or right after finishing loading) of level 4 game exited out, crash in mm.exe (ms error reporting box said crash was in datacache.dll). Now I patched the other day the sp game and when I try to start the game via the start menu shortcut i get a crash in mm.exe (doesn't even start), and the error bug is in engine.dll.

1. Did you ever manage to reach the in game menu / play the game?
- no

3. Where/How does the program crashes?
- just by clicking on the short cut

4. Do you have an error message?
- no

5. Did you update your video drivers with the last one available from NVIDIA / ATI Sites?
- yes (not today, but the day before yesterday; it seems that nVidia is releasing a new driver every hour these days)

6. What is your CPU / RAM / Video Card / Video Card Memory?
- Mobility DualCore Intel Pentium M 1600, 1 GB (DDR-2), GeForce Go 7400, 256 MB
(yes, it's a notebook, but it works fine with comparable games)

7. Are you playing Steam or DVD Version? If you're playing Steam do you ALSO have the DVD Version?
- both; first installed the DVD version which did (and still does) not run; then installed Steam, downloaded the Steam version, which doesn't run either; patched both without any changes

8. If you follow the procedure, does it change anything?
- no

I was able to play (sort of) prior to the 1.01 patch. It was buggy and I couldn't actually progress past the return to the Necromancers lair first level as it crashed on that level EVERY SINGLE TIME.

But now, I am unable to even load the menu since patching. It plays the intro videos and then sits at a black screen indefinately. It won't let me alt+tab or ctrl+alt+del, I have to do a cold reboot of my system.

So to answer the questions:

1. Did you ever managed to reach the in game menu / play the game?

Yes. Prior to patching.

2. If you ever managed to get to the Menu/play the game, did you remember what was the last thing you did before everything went broken?

Installed the patch.

3. Where/How does the program crashes? (Just by clicking on the shortcut / During the first cinematic / After the intro cinematic & during the loading screen to the Menu)

After playing all cinematics I get a black screen, no loading is occuring, my system is sitting idle.

4. Do you have an error message?

No. Just the black freaking screen.

5. Did you update your video drivers with the last one available from NVIDIA / ATI Sites?

Yes.

6. What is your CPU / RAM / Video Card / Video Card Memory?

P4-2.8c
2gb DDR400
ATI X800Pro 256mb

7. Are you playing Steam or DVD Version? If you're playing Steam do you ALSO have the DVD Version?

Steam.

8. If you follow the procedure below, does it change anything?

Yet to try. I thought I'd post this before having to reboot my system. Again.

Woo. I tried that fix. It let me get to the menu. And then the game just Crashed To Desktop. And then it kept on doing the "No, I won't load the menu because I'm a rubbish piece of BS" trick again. Despite that workaround being in place.
