This topic is to give us info regarding people who cant even reach the In Game Menu.

Please answer the following questions.
Do not put your DX Diag in this thread thanks Smile

1. Did you ever managed to reach the in game menu / play the game?

2. If you ever managed to get to the Menu/play the game, did you remember what was the last thing you did before everything went broken?

3. Where/How does the program crashes? (Just by clicking on the shortcut / During the first cinematic / After the intro cinematic & during the loading screen to the Menu)

4. Do you have an error message?

5. Did you update your video drivers with the last one available from NVIDIA / ATI Sites?

6. What is your CPU / RAM / Video Card / Video Card Memory?

7. Are you playing Steam or DVD Version? If you're playing Steam do you ALSO have the DVD Version?

8. If you follow the procedure below, does it change anything?

With the DVD Version:
Right click the desktop shortcut, then select "properties" at the end of the field with the full path to mm.exe add "-width 1024 -height 768"

With a default installation, it should looks like:
"c:\program files\ubisoft\dark messiah of might and magic\mm.exe" -width 1024 -height 768

With Steam Version:
In the Steam Menu, Right Click "Dark Messiah of Might & Magic Single Player" then click "Properties" and then "Set Launch Options"
Add "-width 1024 -height 768" (without the quotes) click OK and launch the game.

Thanks all.

Did you buy the game from Steam or did you install the steam version of the game from the DVD?

bought the game via steam and had this problem and solved it by
a) updating Direct X
b) checking integrity through Steam

p.s. i don't know if it was a or b but i think b is more likely.

I installed the DVD version then i downloaded the steam version *i think*. I simply let steam download whatever it was downloading after the DVD install, which must have been the game.

I didnt use the installer on the DVD.

I have uninstalled the DVD version as well. The DVD version had the same problem loading as the steam.

(how big should the steam version of DM be?)

I'm confused Smile
1. The DVD version had problem loading at what moment? You clicked the shortcut and then nothing happened?

2. Can you launch Steam (alone not Dark Messiah Steam) without any problem ?

sorry, thought it might be confusing.

DVD Version: I clicked the short cut, the computer sounded as if it was loading the game, then just stopped and nothing happened.

Steam Version: Was downloaded after the DVD installation. Yes steam loads. However, none of my other games on steam load (same problem as DM is having) which only happened after i tried running DM.

1- Yes, reached game menu, played without problems 3 times for a few hours total.

2- played up to just past the tower in Menelag's mansion. Battery died in laptop while game was running. (may have something to do with problem?)

3- Game does not load at all, mm.exe shows in task manager for 2-3 seconds only, then nothing.

4- no error message

5- doesn't seem to be a graphical issue w/ display drivers as it worked previously

6- Intel Core Duo T2500 2.0Ghz CPU, 2.00 GB RAM, Nvidia GeForce Go 7900GS 256MB

7- Retail DVD version (australia)

8-Tried it, but no change.

When reading the replies in this thread, I get the impression that some people are struggling with issues caused by faulty installations.

Those installing from DVD shouldn't see steam starting when clicking on the singleplayer desktop shortcut. Another way of verifying is that when starting Steam you shouldn't see Steam downloading any "singleplayer update". In my case, the "evil looking" character displyed in the games main menu was also missing(don't know if there are differences between versions here though, but I'm refering to the CE DVD edition here).

Here's what I did to install the game properly and fixed all my issues(freezes during level load and playing and choppy framerates + audio):

1. Completely uninstalled Dark Messiah and Steam(and deleted the remaining folders manually.)

2. Pre-installed and updated Steam from valves site before starting the Dark Messiah DVD installation(didn't have Steam installed in my first attempt).

3. Then I started the DVD installation and choose a folder for the single player portion and let steam have the multiplayer portion(about 2,36GB) as suggested by the installer.

4. When later asked to install the Steam single + multiplayer content UNCHECK both(an unfortunate option, I believe have confused a lot of users out there), as your obviously not interested in downloading the steam version when you already have the DVD version.

5. When finished, check that steam doesn't download any singleplayer content.

6. Having steam closed/disabled run the singleplayer desktop shortcut and the game should start without starting steam.

Did this help out any of you?

Cheers!
