EDIT: I also on occasion get this CTD error message: Failed to lock vertex buffer in CMeshDX8::LockVertexBuffer
On certain mid-mission loads I get this crash to desktop error: Engine Error Can't load lump 53, allocation of 17756185 bytes failed!!! This just happend again at the load area after you fight the cyclops in the temple of the spider. I can get around it by running the game and trying again, sometimes it takes a few tries though. Running the Steam version, single player with all settings on max. Athlon 64 4000+ A8N SLI-PREMIUM 2048 G.Skill DDR400 1900XT |

Try to check for file integrity via Steam. Cheers Marco |

I've done that, no change.

Game: Singleplayer
Version: Retail Settings Everything set to High Specs: P4 3.2, 1 GB DDR, Radeon X850pro 256MB While trying to play this game, I keep getting a CTD and this error box that says: Engine Error ? "IDirect3DDevice9::Present()". About one minute after my screen clears another message pops up and says mm.exe ? ''The instruction at "0x2408b219" referenced memory at "0x0eb1fd50". The memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program'' I was finally able to beat the Prologue level after about five CTDs!?! When the game finally tries to load the first level, it crashes again with the same series of errors. All of the Source games that I own (HL2, HL2: Episode One, Sin, Day of Defeat, etc.) work great. I have the latest drivers for my ATI x850pro, and the latest version of Direct X. I really look forward to playing this game. |

Game: Singleplay Version: Steam Settings: High on most, low shadows, No AA, HDR on. System: AMD Athlon64 3700+ (San Diego) Asus A8N5X motherboard 1024 MB DDR400, Dual Channel, Kingston GeForce 6800GS, 256 MB, PCI-E Audigy4 Win XP Pro SP2 All using latest available non-beta drivers. No O.C. I got the game at least playable by lowering my res. to 1084X768 but still get bad stuttering when entering certain areas and when there is a lot going on I get severe stuttering and looping but it eventually settles down and becomes somewhat playable. [EDIT] I also have the ridiculously long load times.. it takes several minutes just to load the menu screen, even longer for a new area or chapter. I had to turn my textures down to medium (below what the game recommends for my system) to get through the first part of Chapter 1 but have since turned them back to high. What I fail to understand is, why the demo played near flawlessly on my system at high settings with 4X AA where the retail version chokes badly. I feel the demo badly misrepresents the true performance of the retail game. This is poor business practice - I based my decision to buy the game on my experience with the demo. It's too late for me, you already have my money but perhaps a new demo that is based on the actual retail game would be the honest thing to do? -=-=- - CJ AMD Athlon64 3700+ (San Diego) Asus A8N5X motherboard 2048 MB DDR400, Dual Channel, Kingston GeForce 6800GS, 256 MB, PCI-E Audigy4 Win XP Pro SP2 |

I feel really sorry Croakerjoe that you're going through a lot of problems while runing DM. Did you check this section of the forum ? http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/8821027804/m/8321097694 I highly suggest you take a look at this Topic as I see you have a GeForce 6800 and some troubles have been reported with some specific drivers. I really hope this will be helpfull to you and will allow you to play DM in good conditions. Cheers Marco |

I'm not sure that my problems aren't actually being caused by a faulty DVD.I can watch the intro movie no problem, and I can complete the Prologue. But when it goes to run the next video from the study I get:"Bink:Error opening file. Not a Bink file.Skipping video".Then there's a pause followed by an MM.Exe Application Error:"The instruction at "0x2408b219" referenced at "0x2041fd50".The memory could not be "read".Click on OK to terminate program".
I've tried reinstalling a few times, and after each time the Prologue crashes with other MM.Exe Application errors similar to the above, until I have finally got it back to the original state with the Bink error I've mentioned. My specs are all ample for running the game, and drivers are up to date. Should I be looking for a replacement disc,as I've not seen anyone else having mentioned a Bink error? |

Hi Kapt, Do you have a Geforce 6800 serie video card ? Cheers Marco |

My problem is less complicated.
the introduction screens are crashing (the purple portal thing, and the actual DM intro make the game crash to desktop) i notice there are kind of weird lines like you would see on a video editing program before it crashes... i am running latest codecs.. it does this on multiplayer and singe player launches.. I bought retail, am installing via steam right now. did it on the demo aswell.. i can progress past these screens by holding escape.. but it seems weird to me. i ran the test on steam for compatibility.. all passes. my specs are amd athlon 3800+ (2.4ghz) 2gb (2 1gb sticks) corsair ram abit kn9 sli (nvidia nforce 5 board) nvidia 7900GT - XFX 450watt antec smart power 2 Sata 250gb hdd standard DVD-RW standard usb optical mouse standard keyboard (not usb) |

Thanks for your time and keeping us all updated. Not to be trite, but if you look through my fairly brief post history here, you'll see that I've posted in a handful of individual, unique thread. Those threads? Those are the problems I have. My hardware: HARDWARE: Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.00GHz Memory: . . . . . . . . . 2048MB Corsair 512 MB PC3200LL XMS x4 Hard Drives(s): 160.1GB, ST3160023AS Sound: Creative SB X-Fi...whatever the best one is without X-ram. Videocard: EVGA Geforce 7800 GS CO Superclock Power supply: 400 WattPS Motherboard: Asus P4C800-E Deluxe I've done everything humanly possible on my end that could be done. I've done the validating off of Steam. Defrag, Scandisk. All of it. You name it. I've had the stuttering and all the rest of the repeated problems you've read around here, especially once I get to Stonehelm Chapter one. The game literally becomes unplayable with stuttering. |

Firstly, this is a game in the first few days of its release. From what I've seen already, it is incredible. I understand how a game of such ambition can have teething problems.
I am getting the issue where just as I am knocked off the horse and pulled through the door, the sound starts stuttering and the game freezes. I've waited for 10 minutes but nothing. Like others, my 2Gb of RAM is filled up and then there is a huge swapfile created. I am using a 3.0Ghz Intel - 2Gb of DDR2 RAM Video card is an ATI 9800 Pro / 128 Kind regards |

Exactly what I've got, except the stuttering starts for me as soon as the chapter 1 load screen stars disappearing and it basically never ends. |

Game: Single and multiplayer
Version: Steam (with latest update and file verification) Settings: Tried multiple settings, but usually on highest (have set grfx detail to medium as well) Specs: AMD 64 X2 4600, 2GB RAM, Radeon X1800 Series PCI-E 256mb, 7200RPM Sata HD Problem: Like everyone else, I initially had the static NPC dialog issue, but cleared that up through Steam verification. Currently, I can play through the tutorial with only a little stuttering. When I get to the next level, I can get into the city itself and frequently up the chain before the game completely freezes and usually enters a sound loop. At that time, my system's RAM use goes up considerably (I've seen it as high as 1.8 GB). I then have to ctrl-alt-del to end the game. I've run into the same problem on Multiplayer as well. Oddly enough, it was on the same level (Stonehelm I think is the name, but i'm not 100% sure). I pass all the Steam tests and have updated all my drivers to their latest and greatest. |

Hi marco and the others there are trying to help us. Well my problem : I have just completed the toturial (prologue) BUT, when i am playing chapter 1, riding horse and such. It crashes random times in that chapter = the title to the message is "Engine error" "Failed to lock index buffer in CMESHDX8::LockIndexBuffer" Have any idea how to stop this? was looking forward for the weekend of pure Dark messiah gaming. But the DM weekend seemse to be spoiled. I have the requirements, AND i use geforce 7300 not one of those 6. Tried repair twice, uninstall + install oh and after the engine error.. this one also pops up = "MM.exe instruction at "0x2408b219" referenced memory at "0x2041fd50" memory could not read. Please a little help? Thanks for your time. Oh and, when can we be expecting the patch? _________________________ In a world of might and magic. With absolutely no mirrors. Does evil rule! |

I think you already have all the advanced video settings set to the minimum. There are other console variables you can use to lower the video quality even more and gain the extra performance you need to have a playable game. You can add these lines to your config.cfg file : "mat_specular 0" // disable specular reflections "mat_bumpmap 0" // disable bumpmapping I hope this will be enough. |

Single Player
OS: XP System Specs: AMD64 3200+ 1GB X850XTPE Settings: as the game defaults to on my system. After the very first cut scene with the dude talking, my screen goes black and the audio loops, I have to restart. |

Long loading times can be fixed by using the defrag tool in steam: right click on game icon> properties> local files> defragment cache files.
Hope this helps |
