Finally, after about 10 hours of messing with system settings, installing new drivers and basically making a mess of my pc and using system restore on more than one occasion, ive gotten the game running smooth, crash free on low-med settings.
I'll post here what I did and hope it helps some of you. System spec: FIRST OFF< MAKE A SYSTEM RESTORE POINT!!! > cannot stress how helpful this was to me when i started messing about with the "services.msc" panel. had a few "woops, wtf did I jsut do there" moments. To make a System restore point: >open Start Menu> Run> type msconfig>hit OK> Launch System Restore> Create New restore point>put in a name you'll specifically remember, cause it can be hard to find if you go installin a tonne of stuff after this. to restore the saved point, jsut do as above and hit "Restore my pc to an earlier time" instead of...you get the idea..moving on System specs: Single player dvd retail version AMD 64 Athlon 3000 2.0 GHz 1GB corsair ram 2x200GB Matrox HDisk ATI Radeon 9600 XT (Driver v5.10) Audigy 2 ZS Pro Platinum (never gives a problem) The main problems I was getting were (you'll recognize the errors, I cant remeber the exact system messages) >error The memory cannot be read >cannot lock vertical buffer >insufficient system resources to complete the operation >your ATI 9600 is a load of wank (well actually just blue screen of death, but I'm reading between the lines) (Edit: after writing this out I notice its a little messy, i stuck in things i forgot in some places, but its understandable enough I hope. for more info on how to tweak your pc head over to tweakguides. Great resource, but again, take it with a pinch of salt and do only as much as you need to to get the game running. try the game regularly after you've done a couple of things to see if it helped or made it worse, this way you'll know what to undo and make use of your system restore tool if you make a serious mess of things. good luck) First off, I used the guide over at tweak guide http://www.tweakguides.com/DMOMM_1.html http://www.tweakguides.com/ATICAT_1.html (NVidea users take a look at the nvidea guide, cant say ive tried any of it though, ma or may not help) to see what it could do to help. First off, ignore the part about the latest graphics drivers, anything from the last year or two should work fine for most people, and i'd honestly reccomend that if you find a stable set of drivers, stick with them as long as you can. I've wasted more time on crappy ATI update drivers that wreak havoc with my system (VPU recover has to recover from crashes on my DESKTOP using the 7.2 catalyst..ridiculous); I seriously am tempted to http://www.ctrlaltdel-online.com/comic.php?d=20021029 The main thing Id do first would be defrag your drive after installing the game, this helps for loading times and stutter, and may help reduce crashes. One main thing I reccomend is to get rid of the catalyst control center completely. It's a serious memory hog (about 30 megs idle) and just use ATI Tray Tools (uses under a meg of memory and has all the same functionality. Also, teh guide reccomends switching off the "ATI smart" process. DO NOT DO THIS. The game would instantly crash my gfx card when i left this off. switching it back on was the last thing I did after all tweaks and game runs smooth now. Moving on, following the system tweaks to get rid of any unnecessary system processes to free up AS MUCH RAM AS POSSIBLE, for those of us struggling on a gig, was definitely one good thing. I managed to get windows XP running on under 200MB mem on startup. to get into the system process list go to Start Menu> Run> services.msc be very careful what you're doing here though. The main thing to disable completely here is your antivirus program, stopping any of its processes from loading up on startup. Right click>properties> change "automatic" to "disabled" (Dont worry, when you need to, simply change it back to automatic and hit Start to turn on your antivirus again. Run> services.msc msconfig (jsut thought id type them again cause I know how annoying it is looking for those commands in a long post) Expanding the pagefile to ridiculous proportions, I put it to 2.5GB on both my C drive and E drive (where DM is installed), so about 5 gigs altogether + 1 gig physical RAM; this should allow for the memory leakage to just run amok and still leave you with plenty of head room. Also, I have another 20 gigs or so free between the two drives while the game is running. Next, I editted the Dark Messiah shortcut to include the -dxlevel 90. not sure if this did much though. After that, just load the game on all low settings then turn everything on one by one and see how it goes. test a few different range of settings to see what gets you the least crashes. I'm running on high model details, med textures, and most other stuff low cause to be honest, who gives a **** about lifelike water reflections, most of the other gfx options dont give much of a visual upgrade, but are a real resource hog, so be picky about what you turn up. things like shadows are, for me, negligible, compared to model details which, on low, look like the old system shock humanoids (cringe). Follow the tweakguide guide to do the things I mentioned above here. Most of the other stuff in the guide did nothing to help me and only made things worse. ATI Radeon 9600 XT (this card ALWAYS gives problems with Source by the way,at leas until now, i was convinced it was the card, but it works fine with all other games (Oblivion Doom 3, Prey, Farcry[farcry looks incredible, even on this card, goes to show the difference that a stable engine can make on how hard you can push your card] etc). Source, I reckon, IS a dodgy engine, as has been disputed here already) ok, so I had to go through a lot of trial and error and installing and unistalling **** to get it working, but man it's worth it, played for 10 hours straight once I got it running and ended up sleeping through half my work shift afterwards heh. hope you can all get the game running in some shape or form. At the end of the day though, as a paying customer I was (ive calmed down a bit now that Ive got it working) but I was going mad that Ubisoft.Arkane released such an unstable game. This Source mod needs a LOT more tweaking before it can even be considered to be viable on all of those machines it claims it supports. The lack of customer support (6months down the road and only 2 patches and a handful of almost completely unhelpful and very basic posts from the dev team is NOT what we consider good customer service these days guys...). I really hope they put more work into this game because it has a LOT going for it and I'd love to see a sequel somewhere down the road (not even finished the game yet but I can tell Im going to be left wanting more). Anyway, Ive spent too long away from the game now..withdrawal kicking in..!! good luck |

Today, I played DM SP again.
Every 3rd or 4th loading screen I had to end the task because it did not seem to continue or finish the loading. I got some minidumps now... What I also noted were countless warnings in the console, sad to see such things in a retail (and patched) game. Also found a hole in stairs with nothing behind it. After a while I realy had enough because of those countless loading times... |

My god, you told me to read through all that to tell me "don't use the Steam SP" ?
Nothing other useful for me in there... Is the steam version not the recent one? Still, a game should run. Those problems shouldn't be there. |

First off i had level loading issues but those are fixed now that my graphics look like quake 2 Anyways, yesterday i could play the tutorial lvl, then it crashed. After attempting several times i finally managed to load the Stonehelm lvl, finished that without problems. At the start of chapter three the game crashed about 15 times untill i finally managed to go into the building without it crashing. Then i managed to play for about an hour before i quit the game : In the temple after killing the dragon, fighting goblins just after exiting the spider cave. Every time i load the game and either : move, swing my sword, look around, do anything really, it crashes. Even when i try to do ALT CTRL DELETE it gives me some odd error ive never seen before, and i have to reboot my pc. Help would be extremely much appreciated since the time i played the game was amazing. Cheers |

the current version of Source running under Half Life 2 is very stable and really quite an awesome engine.. its only games that alter sources source that create instability now... source is a wonderful engine that has everything a game could possibly need... Arkane just does not have the resources to get their version of the engine running as well...
just so you know, when Half-life 2 first came out, i was one of those unlucky enough to suffer from every bug under the sun... its only the latest version of source that works so well... I had to play half life 2 the first time through in half hour installments... the games so damn goode, it was so hard to play for such short amounts of time Still, point is that DM seems to be plagued with all the problems that the HL2 version of source used to have... so heres hoping with the SDk |

Hi Arkane,
I can't start up the game because it gives white screens where the company logo's should be, i can hear the sound but cant see the image, then after that it jams and i get the following error message : "can't find background image 'materials/console/background01.vtf This happens after i uninstalled the game because of memory crash errors and reinstalled the game again and the 2 patches (1.01 & 1.02) I really start to heat this freaking game and i think this game should not have been released in the first place. this is the last time i try to fix it before i am going to burn it or throw it out of the window. Game: Singleplayer
Version: Steam (latest update) Settings: I have setting all my options to Medium and some on High Specs: Intel 3000HT, 1GB RAM, GF6600GT (AGPx8,256MB) Problem: The game works fine until a combat starts, it becomes a nightmare, it starts going slowy and slowy and it's unplayable. If I save and load the game again, it returns to the good performance, but when another combat start (any enemy see me) it goes slowy again. |

well my game is messed up, i install it normally from the dvd - single and multiplayer - and steam comes up saying it needs to update, starts at about 73% when its finished i go to run the game and the either one of 2 things happens, i get a white screen cinematic and then a error message, or the game works fine until i start playing till the end of the tutorial then error message, what is this and how do i fix plz?
*Btw my specs all meet the recomended *very similar case to stinky_durian |

Hi Marco,
I still haven't seen a solution to the following problem: Engine Error ? "IDirect3DDevice9::Present()". About one minute after my screen clears another message pops up and says mm.exe ? ''The instruction at "0x2408b219" referenced memory at "0x0eb1fd50". The memory could not be "read". Click OK to terminate the program'' I really like to know how to solve this. I played DM without any problems on my Ati Radeon 9200. Now i'm trying te play it on my new Geforce 7300 with 1024 and a 3,2 ghz processor. and everything is going wrong!! Please HELPPP Ciao, Jelle |

I have the same issue plus now when I move between levels in chapter 8 it either crashs causing me to do a hard reboot or it just sends me back to the main menu like I just started the game. They will just keep pointing you to the "contacting ubi/steam support" thread. Also if you show any kind of dissatisfaction with the game or Ubisoft the admin here will basically cease to be any help whatsoever. This game would rock if it ran worth a damn but like many game companies these guys are little or no help if the standard fixes don't work for you. I wish you better luck than I have had. |

Dark Messiah Server Admin |
Haven't seen an "Admin" post on these forums in a while... And apart from Contacting Ubisoft support there is not much help that we - the community can offer. Your two chances are either Blindnero or contacting Official Ubisoft support. |
|||
|
What does it say under your name there to the left of your post? And you keep talking like this is some fan site.I would think that Ubisoft would have actual reps of their company admining and moderating their official forums. I can see that Ubi is not really interested in helping their customers get their moneys worth out of this product. They obviously have taken lessons from EA on how to release an unfinished piece of **** and then not support it. |

Dark Messiah Server Admin |
And how can I a server admin be of any service to you? Not unless you are running a server I don't see how I relate to this at all.
http://forums.ubi.com/eve/forums/a/tpc/f/808101043/m/8311012955/p/1 Ubisoft officially said that there will no longer be any patches for the game. As such there isn't much to be done anymore. You can keep on contacting Ubisoft support and if enough people contact them (instead of just posting on the forums) then something might just happen. |

Yes, Mana is not a Developer, he is just an administrator on the forum, to well.... keep things inline. Which he has done a good job (shouldn't not like UBI cares anymore >_<
Although, UBI did say no more patches. I doubt they said no more support of the game (techincal issues etc) They may have I am not 100% sure. Though everyone should take Mana's advice and send support tickets to UBI *and* steam. That is double the support. I also know through law, I believe they simply can not ignore everything. They have to reply or do something, God knows what, but they must. If not they can go down Keep that in mind, just take our advice and send support tickets (don't spam either it'll do more damage) Gather all sorts of people to go against it as well, enough people can change how this *could* turn out. After all to make this game a living dream we just nee the Full SDK (which is software development kit.... not Map compiler >_< Greets GodFather[-CA-] |

I'm sorry for venting on you.
It is just so FRUSTRATING! I sent yet another ticket to Ubi and included my DXDIAG and MSINFO and yet again got a canned response telling me to update my video drivers...which I updated a few days ago when ATI released the 7.9 drivers!Had they actually looked at the files I sent them(at thier request no less)they would have known that drivers and system requirements are not an issue. It is replies like that which make me want to find a forum to vent on.I saw the word ADMIN under your name and figured you were in some way employed by UBIsoft and therefore you became a big target for me. Sorry. |
