For those people who don't know how cell-shading (a.k.a. Ink effect) renders look like, look at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell-shading. Thanks to everybody.
Actually I think the cel-shaded look is more in keeping with Jordan Mechner's basic idea that the more realistic you try to make your characters look, the more apparent it is how flawed they are, whereas with a more stylized/"cartoony" approach, there's more focus on good character design and the graphics don't matter as much as they would with realistic characters. I'm paraphrasing badly, it's been a long time since I saw that panel interview, but you get the general idea.

Not that Mechner's working on this game or anything.

I agree wholeheartedly.

I've been pushing those same ideas for so long.

Prince of Persia has always been about outstanding style, outstanding design, and outstanding art, not outstanding graphics. Games that hang their hopes on graphics, with the latest facial mapping features, the coolest particle effects, and the most superb shading, are doomed to fail. Because in five years, every game will look as good as that and even better still. Maybe a game will be noted for having good graphics when it comes out, but no one will remember it in five years solely for its amazing graphics, because it will be technology of the past by that time.

And the less technology they put into having those amazing graphics is all the more that can be spent on a seamless environment and polished game play.

Frankly, you shouldn't even compare this Prince of Persia title to Wind Waker. Notice how the prince still has a proportional figure; his arms, torso, legs and head are all proportionate to each other, whereas Link's body is basically a giant ball on top of a stick body and twig limbs. Prince of Persia's cell shading is an artistic view of a realistic world, and Wind Waker's is an artistic view of an artistic world. They're not comparable, basically.

I think it looks amazing and blends very well with Persia's style. Thumbs Up

I would like to ask 2 questions regarding this game.

1st question: Why did they made it a toon type character rather than to go with the real thing like they did in Assassin's Creed? Is Ben Mattes taking a step forward into a very big puddle of mistake by doing this or, will this step boost more popularity to the already legendary game from UBI?

2nd question: Has Ben Mattes already consulted Mr. Mechner regarding this game? Is Mr. Mechner gonna be the one to trademark this games caption?

That's all, thanks and more power to all the Mods of this forum and all it's loyal members... (I'm gonna watch Vanessa Carlton my idol live tonight ^__^)

First question - Assassin's Creed was all about historical accuracy and stunning realism. And with that, realistic graphics blend best with the concept. Persia has always been about action fantasy, style, artistic view, and amazing designs. And with that, the graphics are freed up to be as artistic as they want to be.

Second question - no idea.

There is no flaw in his gorgeous flowing locks! ^_^
Which is more than we'll ever see from his moving drawing ;_;

QFE!!

... and if I remember correctly, when I read 1,001 nights, the stories stretched all the way from Arabia to China...
Actually, to be honest, none of the very significant stories had anything to do with Persia, I think they focused more on foreign lands because they were 'exotic'.

So yeah, there is actually LOTS of Arabia in 1,001 nights Big Grin

quick question for ib since he always seems to have the scoop on the important parts of the character personalities... ib, does the new prince enjoy muffins as much or even more than the old prince? and if so, what is his favorite flavor?

Well, if you look at the images of the new Prince, you will notice he already has his muffin glove on. He prefers his muffins piping hot and fresh out of the oven!

Yes true, Link is definitely a bit peculiar looking in Windwaker.Wink I was quite hesitant before I played it, but then once I started playing it I forgot all about his cartoonish looks. My attention was completely focused on the gameplay and the story. In other words; if the game is good enough, it should make you forget about things that previously annoyed you when you looked at previews and such. That being said, I didn't complain though when Twilight Princess was not done in cell shading. I'll still replay Windwaker though, I was very happily surprised with it considering what I thought the game looked like beforhand in trailers and pics. So even if it's not possible to compare Windwaker and the new POP game, from experience I've now decided that I won't jump to conclusions and form an opinion about the next POP game being done in cell shading.

I'll wait until having seen more pics, trailers, and most importantly actually having played the game.Smile

All I'm thinking at the moment is that I'm very excited there is a new POP game on the way, and from the little we've seen so far I think it seems promising. Change is not necessarily a bad thing, and it doesn't have to be permanent. I agree with what Hasan ( pop_sot ) said in the announcement thread, I also wish to see the Prince from the SOT trilogy return in future stories. As for now he might need the rest, leave room for another story with new possibilities. But yes, I do wish to see him return again at some point in future Prince of Persia games.Smile

The new Prince has plenty of new tricks up his sleeve. They may or may not include muffins or other baked goods. Wink2
