Peoplez! I need help! I have 500£.

I need to get a laptop and an xbox 360 out of this. An xbox 360 costs £127.22

So,my budget for a laptop can be stretched to £400.

Help me to choose one please. I'm gonna use it for my uni work.But it's also gonna be for web browsing,chatting,guitar pro,watching movies,photoshopping and some gaming(mainly old games that aren't gonna need some extreme gpu but a good one would be preferred for WoW to work decently

Why is London preferable?

I'm going to go for either a dell or an HP, mainly because those brands have been the most trustworthy to me so far.

EDIT: I'm going to save up for an extra £50 so I can afford the 2nd best Dell Studio 17 laptop. It'll be perfect.

2. Go with the DV5! If I was into laptops, I'd definitely get this one!

The rest are with Intel gpus.. I wouldn't count on them to give you that good gaming experience

Coming back on saturday.So I sent her the money to get it as it's cheaper there.
Something I don't like about Dells is that they're ugly. Even the HP Pavillion's nice,with a good graphics card as well.

It'd be interesting if there was some way of using the laptop monitor for the xbox

HP Pavillions are very nice. I had a touch-screen laptop a year or so ago. It was great but one day it just completely died on me. The replacement service was nice and fast.

I think the Dell Studio series look pretty good. Nothing on the Sony VAIO, but that's out of my price range for a simple laptop.

One of my friend's got a Dell Studio. It didn't appeal that much to me.It was so thick

But it isn't much of a problem as I'm not really gonna carry it everywhere

How much would you pay for one?

If I bought one here,it'd cost me £300

They just do! They look like toys and their after sale service suck, at least here in Egypt

As for using your laptop monitor as a TV for your 360, I'm afraid this is NOT possible

I tried everything on my dad's dv6600 when I first bought the thing and wanted to play on it 24/7 and they wanted to watch the TV!

The video (S-Video, VGA) connections on laptops are OUTPUTS. In order to get anything on the screen from an external source, you need a Video Input.. You could try and connect an external video capture device to the laptop and use a S-Video cable from the Xbox though o_O

Some TV-tuners have a 'lag' between the input and what's displayed on the screen/played out through audio. This is no issue when you're watching some TV, but if you're playing a video game and dictating what happens on the screen by using a controller, it'll **** you off. I'm really not sure how you'd go about finding out whether or not a specific TV-tuner will have any associated lag or not.

One idea might be to buy a cheap USB tv-tuner at a brick and mortar that has an exchange policy for opened hardware AND several affordable models in stock. That way, if the tuner you try out doesn't work out, you can try some more and hopefully find one without lag.

ALSO:

before buying the tuner, you'll want to verify that you can un-mute the input or mic-in on your laptop so that you know that sound going into it is immediately played through the speakers. You can use software (media player classic for example) to play-back the audio that's coming in through the line/mic-in ports, BUT doing so will cause an annoying audio delay. Just enough of a delay to be really annoying, like you notice that the 'swoosh' sounds don't sync right with the menu changes in dashboard, or lip/sound being off-sync with video. So make sure your hardware will just do it out of the box by un-muting the line/mic and checking with a microphone (I assume the laptop has it's own mic --brace yourself for feedback.)

If line/mic in won't work un-muted, you can connect the 360 directly to speakers with audio converter cables but if you're hooking up to a laptop you might not have speakers to connect to.

To sum, you need the TV tuner, an audio cable with two female RCA jacks on one side and a male headphone jack on the other (to plug into your laptop's line-in or mic-in port and into the 360's left/right audio RCA ports).

And you're in business.
