Here we are. It gave me something to do during AA gun duty.

Hint for non Aussies. If you ever visit, you might notice that every town has a park with a war memorial and some kind of artillery, or AA gun, or a tank, or even a submarine. It might look rusty and welded up, but don't be fooled! That's what we want you to think... Shady

Guess who is the most frustrated man on the planet today?

ME!

Yesterday I prepared a trip to munich for today to give the commando comic a stroll at the bavaria film studios.
Some may know "Das Boot" was filmed at these studios in the early eighties.
Over there I managed to lend a white Kaleun cap and some binos from the fundus - the place where costumes and requisites are stored.
The guy gave me a broad smile after I told my story of the comic to be send around the globe and offered his help for a tip into the coffee cash.
It was not a really hot day, but I was feeling wet, wet, wet under my chekered shirt and a blue sweater to match the dress code.

Well - I remembered a quite big model of U 96 in front of a small McDonald's restaurant at the area.

11 meter model towed on the Bodensee for distant shots. Puppets where placed on the conning tower, waving their arms...

And I knew the location of the "Das Boot" exhibition, where a 1:1 conning tower, some smaller conning tower models and the 5 meter underwater shot protagonist are displayed.

Two conning tower models displayed at the exhibition

In the background you can see the housing for a 55 meter 1:1 interior setup, where the inside sequences have been filmed.
I managed to enter the "U-Boot" after a group of tourists who payed for the whole studio tour, asking the last guy to let the door open for me.
It worked! I was the only guest of U 96 for about 30 minutes. Enough time to get some detailed shots of all compartments.
I took about 250 photos from the outside models and the interior decoration. The comic book was everywhere! I had even a tripod to get some automatic pics
from myself reading in a bunk and in the control room...

To make a long story short - me and/or my digital camera failed!

The only two pictures on the memory card of our trip to the mother of all U-Boots - U 96 from "Das Boot" are posted above.
I have no idea what happened. The testpicture from yesterday - to ensure the function - was numbered 001 - as the first picture of the trip today showing the 11 meter model.
It is somehow confusing to find two 001 files on the memory card.
After all shots the confirmation of storage was displayed on the screen. It seemed to work perfect - including flash for the interior shots.
To raise my fun - the only other remaining picture was the little conning towers I took at the exhibition setting. Perceived picture number 40 of the day.

??

I should have checked the picturetable of my camera, but I prefered to take shots until the batteries where low.
Recognizing the malfunction I could have made some pics with the mobile camera. At least from the outside settings.

Do I have some reason to be frustrated?
Hell I even didn't shave for 15 days!
(what in my case doesn't mean to grow a beard)

Testpicture from yesterday evening.

RJ - please PM me the next recipient for the comic on your list.

@ Mittelwaechter

Have you tried removing that card and putting it back in ? Carefully cleaning the contacts or reading it with a card reader on your computer.

I had some unexplainable trouble with my SD card when i came back from the Berlin Air show.

My computer refused to recognize the card, for fours times. At one point it read the card but only displayed 50 % of the pics on it, telling me that this was all to be found on it.

I believe this was related to the high temperatures the camera and/or the card was exposed to on that day.

Maybe a little humidity on the cards electric contacts.

Did you carry the camera on your body ? In your trousers or something ?

Theoreticly the pictures should be there, maybe you just cant see them for some reason.

Your camera should have given you a error beep when really not being able to save the data.

Thanks Celeon - your comments made me think!

The camera seems to follow the same rules for storing the pictures as a computer does.
The "address" of the space for the picture is written into a kind of invisible file index.
This index is obviousley damaged. Neither the camera itself nor my computer have access to it.
Some months ago I found a freeware called Recuva. It enables you to restore recently deleted files
by reading this index somehow.
This software restored ~ 30 Pictures on the memory card albeit I didn't delete anything.
All the other pictures are gone - no restauration possible.
Most of the really good ones are missing, but I'm happy to show at least some surviving photos.

Nice pictures Mittelwaechter. Glad you were able to get some of the pictures. Looks like the comic book enjoyed being there. Good Job.

Right, both comics have new destinations. (Apologies from me to Acthungbaby1976 in getting the next address to you so you can forward the comic on - the delay was all due to me)

Bunkerratt and Wh1skea - Watch out for the Post Man - You two are next to receive the comics! Party Hat

The other comic is heading out of Australia, also bound for the USA. It seems they'll crossover there.

If I am not mistaken the comic book took a 10,000 miles detour to get from IL to WI (that is if I remember right)...

@RJ

RJ -- can you share some of the world maps for
"Where is the comic book" adventures?

Hey - this time it was speeding over the ocean.
Only 5 days! The last transfer took about two weeks.
Our toll checked the envelope. Maybe they kept it a few days and the whole gang had some fun reading.

A shame there is no way to collect some bonus miles.

... and that was priority mail!

Imagine if it was sent via Media mail.... It would probably match the actual time it took a u-boat to traverse the atlantic.... (added degree of realism)
