So the Rise of Flight demo was released yesterday , and as im still about a week ago from my full version copy ive decided to install it and give it a try.

The plane i am flying is the Spad 13.C1 with the paintjob used by Eddie Rickenbacker.

My first attempts at Rise of Flight

This sim is very hardware hungry. Dual Core CPU minimum, quad core recommended. One Core is used by the graphics engine the other one by the physics engine.

Im running it on a 2.6 GHZ Dual Core CPU, 4 GB of RAM and a Nvidia GTS 250.

Everything set to high = Unplayable

After setting shadows to Medium, Anti-Aliasing to 0 , Trees to low... The game still looks awesome and suddenly runs on decent framerates.

Sound is very good. There is only one plane in the Demo the SPAD13.C1 so i can only talk about its engine sounds which are excellent. Wind sounds are also very realistic (And loud !)

The only thing im still missing is the stress sounds coming from the wooden hull of the plane when flying tough manouvers. On the other hand i dont if the pilot could actually hear those sounds with the immense noise coming from the engine.

Flight model is very complex and definitely on IL-2 niveau if not even better.

Hitting the enemy with the sights is very difficult but thats just the way it was in the old days so a high level of realism there.

One of the drawbacks : Loading times are very long.

Bullet model is highly realistical. As you can see in my video, ballistics and accurency (or the lack of it) of the machineguns are correctly modeled.

In the full game you can configure the guns to your preferences : Range of cross point, type of ammunition etc.

The guns jam quite often (as in reality) but you can fix that very quickly by pulling the loading handle on each gun.

Physics engine is absolutely awesome. (Watch video) The whole plane is vibrating once you start the engine, and the propellor's torque constantly pulls the plane to the right during start and flight. Very realistic.

If you switch the automatic assist for the engine off, you need to set the fuel mixture on your own, start the engine on your own, need to make sure its warmed up before accelerating.... very nice

I will gladly answer questions !

Nah, they would propably tell me that this incident is time-barred. Big Grin

whisper The french build very good cars btw.

Im a secret fan of Citroen. They build very modern and good looking cars and always have these little ideas and innovations the others dont offer.

WOW!
The in cockpit engine sounds are awesome, at least on the stereo I have hooked into my system. I could almost feel the wind in my hair and it made me want to grab hold of my joystick and...errm Blush
Anyway when you started combat I was lmfao.
(sounds of fabric being shredded) Oh whats that?
Too Happy
On a more useful note, does the game give you any option of trim tabs? If so you can add in some left rudder trim and get rid of the yaw.
Oh the most important thing: Where did you get the demo? I cant find it! Smash

Yeah i know, for now the demo is only available via the torrent networks because of its size (2.77 Gigabytes !) so you'll need a torrent client.

Download for the Torrent file

After installation you need to click on register and create a account on the Neoqb website.

(You'll just need the usual email adress for that)

Specify a username and your password.

In the account you can activate the demo access.

Once activated you can launch the demo and login with your account name and password. After that you end up in the main menu of the game and can start playing.

Big drawback : The demo is only playable for 72 hours after activation after that you cannot play it anymore.

As for trimming the rudders : I dont know. Its not doable in the demo but propably in the full version.

They also put a new plane in their online store today.

The game does look amazing, but i'm kinda worried about trying the demo as i may end up buying it and paying another £40 for the add on planes Roll Eyes

I'm sure last time i checked the price of the planes they were around $5 each and are now $7.62.
Mabee they've gone up in expectation of the release of the game in some areas??

The price is still the same. You propably saw the Euro price which is 5€ , the dollar equivalent is $7.62

But yes, including the additional planes and the ones that will come in the future the price goes to the €100 mark. Indifferent

They've already announced two-seater planes aswell. They will support two players control in multiplayer.

I just read how Manfred von Richthofen almost lost a fingertip in one of these. Big Grin

He once was a turret gunner and when he wanted to point out a target to the pilot he forgot about the close by propellors. Big Grin

Hard to believe that the graphic was on the lower setting. The graphic is too good and really appreciate the dynamic shadowing even the shadows under the wing .. truly awesome!!

One thing that I don't understand with the flight sim kind of game though, why don't they put the person on the chair or something that we can see the body of the pilot or the hand holding the flight stick. Without having anyone on the chair, it feels like we are the ghost who fly the plane .. Big Grin or is it available on the highest graphic setting?

Thanks for sharing Celeon ... Thumbs Up

Nope, the cockpit stays empty. I also thought about that.

I just made my first succesful flight up into the clouds. About 35 minutes with flying back to the "aerodrome" followed by a flawless landing.

Almost did not find out of a really big cloud Blink

No artifical horizon, nothing. Only a simple water bubble level on that dashboard Veryhappy

Try to figure out which position your plane is in when you cant see anything and do not feel the plane.

Im also learning to play around with the fuel mixture lever. I still havent found a way to reactivate the engine in flight if it should get off. Which can happen for several reasons btw.

There is a procedure for getting that engine on again but i dont know it. The demo does not come with a handbook Big Grin

I guess back then it was something that the pilot instinct and skill came in handy. This is how I appreciate the altimeter on board. I didn't think about this.

This is the time when a parachute comes in handy ... I was cracking up to read your comments when the engine was off in the air .. Veryhappy

Is there a fuel that we can manually pump? Perhaps the fuel needs to be pumped manually by moving the fuel lever several times and then try to switch on the engine again? Not sure whether it will work ..

Ive tried , to no effect.

Which isnt surprising as the engine of the Spad 13 was a Watercooled V8 carburettor engine (Hence the cool sound in idle mode). Cool

Just like in a car, a carburettor engine does not have a fuel pump but sucks the fuel out of the tank by itself once its running.

I do not understand much about engines but theoretically a single or more propellor turn should suck fuel into the cylinders when the fuel supply is on and the electric starter should ignite it and start the compression cycle and with that the whole engine (or in that case when the respective starter handle is turned)

But the propellor stops once the engine is off and the wind does not move it as it has a....i dont know the english term for that. Big Grin

Thats why, in the old days, someone had to turn the propellor while the pilot operated the electric starter.

You know, just like in the movies : "CONTACT !"

They did not had electric start assists yet.

Well, i just do not know enough about old airplane engines....yet Winky

In the car, the carburettor is not strong enough to suck the fuel from the fuel tank as it is only worked by strong air flow just to give enough suction from within the small carburettor chamber that stores the fuel.

So a fuel pump with strong suction to suck the fuel from the tank is still needed then push the fuel to the carburettor. Not sure though whether it is designed differently for the aircraft.

Perhaps the game is designed this way as it deals with an old plane and therefore don't expect perfect flight with the old aircraft Winky

Interesting .. I was wondering how they start the huge rings to turn. Everything was done through the control station but who knows .. Confused

Fear not my friend. The picture below should give an almost close description to an old aircraft engine .. Big Grin BUT don't ask me what they are cuz I don't understand it myself and I only know where the propellor is ... Veryhappy

I've been flying in RoF for a couple of months now, and the two patches and one quick fix that neoqb have made so far has improved the initial release immensely.

Celeon, have you purchased any of the additional aircraft yet?

The Albatros D.III, just released, is a real treat.
I'm not as crazy about Nieuports as I thought I'd be, simply because they lack compasses (try finding your way home in a rainstorm without one!) ... something that S.P.A.D. thoughtfully included in their planes.

I dearly love my S.E.5a! Smile

@ AtlantikEel

Not yet. My copy of the full version should arrive the coming friday. Hopefully

Do you know if they offer other pay methods than credit cards now ? Pay pal or something ?

All banks here want a monthly charge for their cards, even if you dont use them within that month, so i dont want one. Im not paying a charge for having the theoretical ability to pay although im not purchasing something Roll Eyes

@ pacific_breeze

I know now why my engine failed in that video ive posted.

I propably had a hole in my fuel tank Veryhappy

Happened to me again lately and as i now found out that the tiny fuel gauge is hidden on the bottom of the SPAD 13 cockpit in front of the flight stick...... i wont be surprised again. Big Grin

And know i also know why i had so many problems with the engine after longer flights.

Sudden decrease in power or complete shutdowns.

Maybe its better to open that radiator to let the wind in ...... Blush

Might be that the engine just got a little hot with the radiator being shut... Googly

How i flew :

Anyone remembers the good old times ? Happy

I loved that one Thumbs Up It has exactly what Rise of Flight is still missing.

More historical infos, a similar easy quick fight system and a more polished campaign. What happened to those wonderful funerals you had in all of the Chris Roberts games like Wing Commander ? What about "Dogfight a famous ace" ? That was a highly cool feature. Thumbs Up

Look what happens to him in the end. Veryhappy I had never beaten him either.

Talking about powerful machines, .. someone posted a video of Rise of Flight at maximum detail settings.

Here it is

Check out the unique sound of of the Nieuport 28's rotating engine. Thumbs Up

Meanwhile the Europe release was pushed back another 2 weeks. Angry Blue Guy Should have ordered me a import version Angry Blue Guy

a lot of the old engines also used a "light" oil that also blew back into the pilot's face i actually like the ww1 era aircraft..

If I remember correctly, they used castor oil, which had dire effects on pilots' digestive systems...

Didn't smell too bad though - the smell of castor oil reminds me of when I used to watch the stock-car racing at Wimbledon Speedway.
