(AP) Jim McKay, the veteran and eloquent sportscaster thrust into the role of telling Americans about the tragedy at the 1972 Munich Olympics, has died. He was 86.
McKay died Saturday, said ABC, the network with which he was long affiliated. The cause of death was not immediately given. McKay was host of ABC's "Wide World of Sports" for decades. The influential weekend series introduced viewers to all manners of strange, compelling and far-flung sports events. But he was suddenly placed in the role of a newscaster in 1972 when Israeli athletes were kidnapped in Munich. As viewers followed the gripping story, McKay told how the hostages were killed in a commando raid. |

Comedian George Carlin dies in Santa Monica of heart failure at age 71
AP - 23.55.2008 05:55 A publicist for George Carlin says the legendary comedian has died of heart failure at a hospital in Santa Monica, Calif. Jeff Abraham says Carlin went into St. John's Hospital on Sunday afternoon, complaining of chest pain. Carlin died at 5:55 p.m. PDT. He was 71. The dean of counterculture comedians, Carlin constantly pushed the envelope with his jokes, particularly with a routine called "The Seven Words You Can Never Say On TV." When Carlin uttered all seven at a show in Milwaukee in 1972, he was arrested for disturbing the peace. And when they were played on a New York radio station, they resulted in a Supreme Court ruling in 1978 upholding the government's authority to sanction stations for broadcasting offensive language. <DRGN> It is truly a sad day when the world looses a person that can take the human condition (good or bad), stand it on it's ear and make anyone with an honest oppinion laugh like there is no tommorow!! George was a brilliant comic and renownd author. |

This ol' fart made me laugh and think!
I had to clean up one word, I know you censored it, but it's still not acceptable.Although, your comment did make me laught, because it's the truth. Hhm - two beasts are fighting in my heart. You're a moderator and "in command", but George deserves better than complete censorship of his own expression to describe himself. Well, I guess he doesn't care... This message has been edited. I will miss old George. I first heard him in the 1980's and his strong language didn't always go down well but he never cared, and wouldn't now... Mittelwaechter, I didn't read your post before it was edited but we do have children on this forum, Children who can drive cars, own guns but not drink beer or vote admittedly, but still children. Unpacked and settled. |
