NP Delta Wink

I got it, play it, depending on the server it's pretty much "who's got the better vehicle" or "run to the nearest vehicle" type game. On the Titan it's one on one (ish).

Probabaly won't buy it just because EA has included "spyware" for ingame ad targeting. I really really hope that Crysis doesn't have this "spyware" also.

There is a petition to stop it but probably won't amount to anything.

here."Greetings,

We would like to provide more information on in-game advertising in Battlefield 2142. To try and help everyone better understand it, here is how it works.

The in- game advertisement is respectful of players' privacy: it never accesses files not directly related to the game, and it does not capture personal data such as cookies, account login detail, gameplay behaviour or surfing history. As it is an integrated part of Battlefield 2142 and not a separate program, it only runs when the game is running.

Because BF2142 delivers ads by region, the IP address of the player is used to determine the region of the player and helps serve ads by region and language; for instance, a player in Paris will be presented with ads in French. Note that this IP address is not stored on the advertisement server and is not repurposed for other uses.

A unique ID number is anonymously assigned the first time the player joins a Battlefield 2142 online game. It is stored locally on the PC but is not linked to any personal details.

The in-game advertisement gathers what we call ?impression data?, such as location of the billboard in the game or duration of advertisement impression. It
helps see how many people have seen an ad ? but not who has seen it.

We are also conscious that the advertisement shouldn?t distract the player from the overall gaming experience, so all ads fit in the unique environment of each level in the game. The content of the ads is also controlled to ensure that no offensive content is displayed in "Battlefield 2142.

We all hope that this explanation will address recent concerns on the advertisement in Battlefield 2142.

See you on the Battlefield.

Your Dice Live Team"
----------------------------

I'm sure their are some unhappy customers that had the "little slip of paper" fall out of the box that read. Looking at "....IP address and other anonymouse information ("Advertising Data")" it would suggest more than a users IP addy is being "mined" from the user's system. "IF" the idea is to target market ads just an IP will not do the trick.

And this..."The Advertising Technology does not collect any personally identifiable information about you" is very very very vague! That could be a lot of stuff on my computer (almost all actually Roll Eyes).

Also, if this is true...
"The in-game advertisement gathers what we call ?impression data?, such as location of the billboard in the game or duration of advertisement impression. It helps see how many people have seen an ad ? but not who has seen it."
....then they would NOT need to install "spyware" on the users computer. All that information could be retrieved from the game server right?

And if you don't like it your only option is "IF YOU DO NOT WANT IGA TO COLLECT, USE, STORE, OR TRANSMIT THE DATA DESCRIBED IN THIS SECTION, DO NOT INSTALL OR PLAY THE SOFTWARE ON ANY PLATFORM THAT IS USED TO CONNECT TO THE INTERNET".

I personally think this tactic is just not right! If they are not happy the "profit margin" why not make more/better games.
Or sell more units by reducing the cost (ie: 75 USD game selling 1,000,000 units = 75 Million bucks; 35 USD selling 10,000,000 units = 350 million bucks) Point being if the game is priced right more units will sell and a heck of a lot quicker, production costs will drop per unit and....more than likely you'll have a lot of really happy customers Wink.

PS. No time to edit...but I'll be back Wink

Hey thanks for explaining that man. It sounds like more and more games will be doing this, Crysis included. My only complaint, if EA/Dice is now making more $$$ from this, split it between your company and the public, drop the price of games a little. BF2142 is a blast, most of my clan is now focusing on it. We also picked up 2 servers and dropped our FC server.

I absolutely hope more game developers will NOT be doing this. I won't buy games any more, period. I already will not buy BF 2142 because of this. The points about focusing on selling more copy's to increase profit are absolutely correct. That is what a game company should be focusing on, spending more time and effort making a better product, to sell more copies. Not creating new and intrusive ways to sell advertising dollars at the expense of their own customers. It is insulting.

Where is the benefit to us the consumer with their creative advertising ploy? You are all right, the price of the software is just as high. We get no price break. But we are subjected to totally unwanted Nokia ads, in a video game that is supposed to immerse us in a future, end of the world battlefield. On top of that, their "creative" advertising ploy, does sound a lot like spyware, and is very questionable, regardless of what official statement they may make. Talk about sticking it to the consumer. I hope EA goes the way of the end of the world battlefield.
