I was going to do this when playing Far Cry a couple of years ago, but never got around to it. So, when I installed Crysis, I decided I would document the adventure in blog-like fashion.
If you are interested in reading about my adventure, navigate to the following URL: jvmach67 in Crysis This blog is really meant for someone who has either already played the game or doesn't care about spoilers ... since I plan to talk about everything that Nomad runs into during the course of the game. Normally, I don't have lots of time to play, but did get a lot of playing in over the Thanksgiving holiday. So, don't expect to see a daily post with tons of new data. Let me know your thoughts. Thanks! jv |

Nice blog on level one. But the back story makes Nomad about 40 years old. Is that your intention? He is only a Lieutenant and I thought of him as being in his late 20's.

Well ... I did turn 40 earlier this year ... so maybe in trying to write from Nomad's perspective, I ended up providing too much of my own perspective.
Thanks for reading! jv |

Well it is a planned trilogy. Maybe by part 3 Nomad will be a seasoned vet in his 40s, perhaps even giving commands rather than following them. Even better if they make it far less linear in doing so.

So Six-Gun,
I remember we talked months ago about Crysis and then I recall you giving GRAW a run. How do you like Crysis so far? Did you check out my blog? So far, it has been a blast to write. It makes the single-player version draw out much longer ... which is a goal of mine, since I heard the story is shorter in length than Far Cry. Of course, the whole trilogy thing might have something to do with the shorter storyline. Later! jv |

Enjoying it so far jvmach67.
FAQs, walkthroughts, videos, community, are as much a part of the game as the actual game. I don't recall anyone doing a blog before! Hope you keep going. |

No jv I haven't looked at your blog yet because I don't even own the game yet. I have seen it for around $30 on Ebay though so I may get it soon. That price is equivalent to about $35 in stores after factoring in the shipping. I'd really rather not buy off Ebay unless via an Ebay store I trust though. I don't play mp anymore so I can't justify paying too much for the game. My main concern about the game is whether the upcoming patch will improve anything on the sp side.
Meanwhile I've had a fair bit of fun just fiddling with modding the Island map via the editor. I have it set up now with two patroling helis, an idle heli for the player, a P Boat, an APC, snipers, 4 added troops, 2 Scouts and lots of added weapons including vehicle mines, C4, Claymores, SMG, sniper rifle, incindiery bullets, grenade launcher attachment with several SCAR/FY71 grenades throughout the map and 2 LAWs. I was surprised to find after looking at the damage multipliers in the Scout script that the SMG is about 50% more effective against them than the FY71. I've had some incredible battles with the Scouts and the helis sometimes leaving one or both Scouts alive while venturing to the first heli patrol area which can create quite a lot of spectacular events going on. Some things don't make sense though like the MOAR Scouts that use the freeze ray can freeze a driver of an inflatable boat but the gunner seems to be imperevious to it. I also experimented making a gigantic turtle and crab but I'm upset that you can't make them aggressive. You can only make them follow you and they aren't even very good at that. The only one small problem I need to solve before uploading the map is getting the snipers to shoot consistently. I figured out how to make them stay in position, but for some reason despite being all scripted the same some will shoot well and some won't shoot at all even though they see me. |

Not playing anything?? Does that mean no more of your excellent videos, or perhaps a Crysis MOD in the future? |

Six_Gun -
I don't blame you for waiting to get the game for a cheaper price. That's what I did with GRAW and plan to do with both Call of Duty 4 and Unreal Tournament 3. I had to replace my UT2004 over the summer and ended up getting that game for less than $10 with shipping included. It was a legit copy that someone was no longer going to play. Works great for me. I was able to get Crysis for $10 off using a Frye ad at Best Buy. So, I bought it for $39, I think. I had played the demo and really want to get into the game, since I didn't start playing Far Cry until 2005 when I finally had a machine that could run Far Cry. Once you get the full game, let us know. I certainly value your opinion on First Person Shooters and like Vals_Evil_Twin noted - loved the movies too! In fact, I showed them to a buddy while we were eating lunch one day. Great stuff!!! I also want to hear your thoughts on the blog too ... certainly willing to wait until you've played through the game - since I know you don't want me to ruin anything for you! See ya! jv |

Well so far I have mixed emotions about Crysis. It's one of those that you can easily get into a love/hate affair with just fiddling with the demo editor, which often has inconsistent results. Getting the AI to do what you want in particular seems to be the single biggest frustration. Just when you think you've triumphed you find you are hard pressed to reproduce what you thought was a revelation. Crysis also lacks the freedom of gameplay pathways that Far Cry had and those whom thought the radio chatter in FC was monotonous are now likely wishing that of Crysis were at least as subtle as Doyle's mutterings. That being said, with it's more intricate content the more creative mappers are likely to come out with astounding stuff.
Thanks for the mention on the vids btw, it was really just some stuff I threw together without a lot of forethought after my initial thrill with the demo. I really won't be able to go all out like I did with Far Cry vids until I get a better rig though, hopefully by mid next year. I want to build up something based on a quad core and 9800GTX, though I'm still apprehensive about Vista. I plan to upload my modded demo map once it's finished. I am currently working on getting Jester to follow and play with you throughout the map. So far there's just two spots he gets hung up on but he fights like a trooper even with his health reduced to that of the NK AI (180) and set to invulnerable=false. I'd love to be able to get Jester to cloak when the player cloaks but I don't know how to pull that off yet, or if it's even possible. It's funny how he'll take shots from the snipers I placed swearing he'll kill them for it and he actually does a pretty good job of it sometimes. To be honest I've only tested playing with him in the editor va Ctrl+G, which defaults to Normal difficulty mode, so I don't know how well he'll fare exposing himself like that in game on Delta. |

Thanks for the post, Six_Gun! Do you know if the 9800GTX video cards are out yet? I have the 8800GTS now and even thought about getting an 8800GT OC from eVGA and selling my 8800GTS - since I have only the 320 MB version. However, if the 9800 series will be coming out soon, I would prefer to wait on that technology - providing it comes out on top.
Also ... I wanted to check back in and let you know that I have blogged up to the end of the Awakening level. So far, the Single Player campaign is a lot of fun and blogging the adventure has been even more fun! The blog also continues to evolve, as I've added FAQs and a level update to the side-bar navigator. I might even add polls soon to get your thoughts. I just wanted to let everyone know that I finished blogging my Crysis Adventure in January. Since that time, I have compiled the blog entries into three different PDF files.
- Full-Color - contains decent sized images from the game and the PDF file is built in a brochure-like format. The file is meant to be read via computer, handheld device, etc. - Printable - contains smaller images and no background images behind the text. It was designed to be a printable version of the full-color file. - Text-Only - contains only the text of jvmach67 in Crysis. The file is the smallest in size and can be printed using less than 85 sheets of paper. There are only a couple of images in this file. Version 1.1 of all three formats can be downloaded at no charge from FileFront.com. Links to each format are located on the top right-hand corner of each page of my blog: http://jvmach67.blogspot.com As always, I am interested in hearing your thoughts regarding My Crysis Adventure! Take care! jvmach67 aka Nomad |
