I'd like your opinions on it, and whether you had any hicups in gameplay in some spots going around corners, down stairs, etc, where there's momentary short freezes in action.
I have a high end machine, and tried lowering the settings, which did not help, so I can only assume it's something with the demo or the way it works with my X800XT. This appears to be as good as the raves though, with great graphics and very realistic effects. The weapons are also very cool. I'm hearing it uses the same engine as Riddick. |

I just played it (my specs in sig). I had no problems at the auto configured settings (800x600) everything on high.
The gunpowder haze during/after a battle is a very nice touch. I played on easy settings to get a feel for the controls and it was too easy. I will have to go back and give it a run through on a harder setting. There is a lot of DOOM3-like feel to it and seemingly no opportunity for stealth or alternate pathways (at least in the Demo) The AI is good with bad guys jumping in and out of broken windows and such. It looks like a good game and I will consider buying it. Although I may wait until I upgrade my video card. It seems like I play nothing but Far Cry these days. |

Several people I have talked with seem to love it. I've been swamped with getting ready for classes lately, but I'll be checking it out today or tomorrow for sure.
@Coops: Same here sir, same here... I still have the BF2 demo on my desktop, I should uninstall it. |

Actually your sys is pretty good fab, I know techs that refuse to give up their 9800 Pros, there's some things that they do better than the X800 series. I'm really quite surprised the auto detect said 800x600 for that sys. I think Riddick is Open GL isn't it, and I heard F.E.A.R uses the same engine? My card isn't the best at Open GL games like Doom 3. |

I though the demo was cool. It ran well on FX5200go at 640 res and DX8, which was a big surprise.
It was linear, but was still fun (unlike HL2). I had fun with the proximity mines. Only thing that throws me, why does that guy knock down the shelves, then attempt to crawl under them? Seems silly to me . . . |

You guys got a link for the demo?
edit: got it, nevermind |

Dude, I'm almost as impressed as I was when I played the far cry demo. Seriously, Best frikkin gameplay I have seen in a looong time. It's in a different league to most other games including half-life 2 in my opinion. I shall be buying this game, without a doubt.
Oh and the only problems I had were with the Catalyst 5.7 drivers where the graphics when completely crazy, the same thing that happened to battlefield 2 with 5.7. Hopefully the new drivers (5.8) won't be so dodgy. This message has been edited. Last edited by: Phoenix_of_Light, |

I was wondering that myself, but I'm worried if they fix too many things in 5.8, the FPS for Far Cry will drop back down. 5.7 has given me quite a boost in Far Cry FPS wise. |

You heard wrong the F.E.A.R engine was written from the ground up for this game. For those interested http://www.tweakguides.com has a guide written up for tweaking the demo ---------------------------------- |

I've played both the MP and SP games. I really like the combination of HL2/Riddick/FC. Tight game. And yes, Riddick was OpenGL.

Installed the demo this evening and i was really impressed by the mood and atmosphere.. .i really loved the music (not the title theme..though)
The lighting, models, textures, physics, ragdoll and everything like that was spot on it looks sweet, espcially the wall and floor damge decals! Things i didn't like - the automatic weapons, I disliked the feel of them soo much I just didn't use them at all after testing them. I thought they had a weak sound and strongly disliked the burst fire mode + accuracy. eek! the pistol I loved... raw power!... other things I didn't like were some of the movement controls and the head bobbing! most of which can be changed in options though. good game, I think - it certainly made me jump on a few occasions thats for sure. |

All good points, and ones I forgot to mention. I didn't like the slippery weapon aim feeling, and the recoil was out of control, esp with bursts it should have been less. The movement and weapon bob could have been better too. I ended up turning the mouse sensitivity down to 0! Hopefully most of that will be adjustable in menu like you said. I can see why Matto values you as a beta tester, you have a sharp eye for things. |

Hi, Actually FEAR uses its own engine, an updated version of the older Jupiter engine (http://www.touchdownentertainment.com/) Within the past 2 days, the FEAR engine changed names. They where just calling it the FEAR engine but now its refered to as Jupiter EX. Riddick was powered by the Doom3 engine. They are definitely separate engines, Jupiter EX being the more advanced, using the same physics system as HL2. The FEAR engine is definitely processor intensive, reports are that even on high end machines there can be jumpiness. But its ok because by the time games start using it high end computers will be even MORE high end, with separate physics processors handling the Havok system. Ill be learning the FEAR engine inside and out very soon... |

OK ionized, thanks for the info, too bad they didn't make the Jupiter EX engine as efficient as the one HL2 uses.

yea i have played the demo and it was awsome. with my new system it ran awsome at medium/high settings. i have a amd athlon xp3000+, 1gb ocz performence ram, ati radeon 9800 pro 128mb. if the game is processor intensive then how come my old xp3000+ can run it perfectly fine with no lag what so ever.

Because some systems are simply setup more cleanly than others. Hardware and software setup can be major performance factors. You would be amazed at some of the background processes some people have running on their systems, unaware that it can potentially slow them down. Outdated bios, drivers, etc. Hardware compatibility... on and on |

I don't think any of that is the issue for me, and I'm running an ATI card too, though an Intel proc of the equivalent speed. The only hardwre that may be conflicting in my sys is the m-audio sound card, which also is more proc hungry than the one I'll soon be getting, at 4-5% CPU usage. The sound plays fine though, I'm hoping some if not most of the video lag will be addressed in an early patch of the game, if not in the Cat drivers. |

m-audio is the best

Well I'm not intent on giving up my revolution 5.1 just yet, but one thing I really don't like about it is the lack of being able to do software recording with it, as it's limited to mic/line in. It also has very limited hardware decoding. I have to enable SRS surround just to get 5.1 out of it, and I think it does that by software. Had a TB Santa Cruz previously, same thing, great sound, but software processing only. I'd like to keep the m-audio and run splitter cables, as I have a great set of Creative 5.1 Gigaworks speakers. I've not been able to find gold plated splitters though. |

I played this demo last night and I was pretty impressed. The AI was one of the highlights for me.
I loved the way they jumped and rolled through the windows. I did experience some minor lag around corners, it seemed to happen right before I encountered some enemies. Overall this looks to be a decent game. The gunsmoke was a plus, the damage to walls was really cool and the rag-doll/body damage looked all too real. The settings were autodetected at high on my system and it ran pretty well. I was impressed with the shadows as well. My system: P4 2.8 512 RAM Leadtek 6600GT AGP |
