Dead Rising Causing Xbox 360s to Fail?
Is the Xbox 360 failure rate higher than we think? One employee of a leading publisher believes so, and he also thinks that Capcom's recent release of Dead Rising is contributing to the problem. More within...
GameDaily BIZ was tipped off today by an employee of a major publisher (he wished to keep his name and company anonymous) who claims that the Xbox 360 failure rate—at least within this particular publisher's studio—has been much higher than Microsoft has stated failure rates to be.
"[We] got about 300 or so consoles to sell to us for the 360 launch - and I can tell you that from those consoles A LOT more than 5-6% of them have completely died (an informal poll comes closer to 30-50%)," the industry source said.
More interesting still was that this person witnessed even more 360 units fail when people started playing Capcom's Dead Rising around the offices.
"... it seems to center around the release of Dead Rising. The rumor no one can quite confirm right now, is that DR is one of the first games to use the Dual-Core [processors] and thus gets the machine hotter than any other games released so far," he explained.
For Capcom's part, the company doesn't seem to claim any responsibility for the apparent overheating issue. A spokesperson told us, "The game works under the specs of the 360 system and was approved by Microsoft. For anyone having issues with hardware, we have referred them to contact Microsoft for hardware support." (Capcom did not confirm at the time whether or not Dead Rising does indeed use the Dual-Core, or if this is the reason for the problem.)
After explaining the Dead Rising situation, the source then went on to further complain about the failure rate for the console and customer service at MS. "Upon investigating this online, I have discovered that over in the states they (MS) are beginning to charge people $130 to have their machines repaired if they go over the 3 mo warranty period. Some of us here at [company name removed] are on our 5th! console after returning it and burning out another and another and another. A quick calculation, and you can see that it won't take long to have your 360 costing you 2 and 3 times what the PS3 is planning on charging," he lamented. "Although they have not yet initiated that scheme here in the UK- it is still taking a month or more per exchange to ship and receive a new(refurb) console. But if it is true, that it is only just recently that games have come out that truly tax the console, that would seem like an unfair business practice to me."
GameDaily BIZ has been in touch with MS and is currently awaiting comment on this matter. We'll update the story shortly.
EA has since been revealed to be the "anonymous company" mentioned in the removed article (posted above). You can read about it in the new story.

I'm about to trade in my 3 month old Xbox 360 for a FOURTH one. This is ridiculous. Anyone who thinks Microshaft's claim of 3-5% failure isn't paying attention...
i dont believe that **** for a second.if 1/3 to 1/2 of 360's had gone bad it wouldnt be something MS could keep quiet.i see alot of complaints on the message boards but of about 15 people i actually know and consider reliable that have a 360,one has had their 360 go bad.

That's not to say that 30-50% of ALL 360's have gone bad, just the ones EA had.
And like I said, if you think that 3-5% is accurate, you haven't been paying attention.
I know that atleast around 7 people I know have a 360 that died already, and I expect the number is still growing. Note that these people or all member of one of two clans, which is 37 people in total.
This doesn't proof anything but still when I called MS after my headset broke they seriously said to call back in 1.5 hours because it was so busy at there tech support, a friend of mine with a dead 360 also confirms this.
I have two Xbox 360's, one for my son and one for myself,we have had no problems. Also we don't know of anyone on our friends list or otherwise that have had any problems..OH NO, maybe I don't know many people!!!
"Some guy from EA who doesn't want you to buy DR cos' Madden or some of their other **** is coming out at a similar time" That sounds more like EA to me
Alot of people I know had their 360's go bad, including me and it took about a month and a half to get a new one. One of my friends is on his 5th. All the stuff stated in the article is true. The power supply for the 360 is just to weak and doesnt give off enough power to run the 360 at what it should be running at, which then causes the 360 to overheat.

lol, I would imagine that if more power were to be pumped into the 360 that it would be a 360/EZbake oven.
When you say alot of people you need to elaborate with an accurate number, not "like 20 or 30 people I know". I know of 3 people, that I can remember, that have sent their box back. I personally have not had any problems, maybe because I take care of mine, but I believe that mine would have surely failed by now with that 30-40 percent failure rate.
Sadly to say, the 360 could have had more planning and a little more time to develop. The case should be bigger despite the arguements of the size of the last xbox. You can't expect to have everything in a small package and not expect any problems.
A bigger case would have been a wizer choice, a mid-size atx case would have been adequate than this mid/micro-atx configuration. Liquid cooling would have been a plus. Although many problems could arise from liquid cooling but it would pay out in the long run. I am considering on doing a case mod to move my 360 from that cramped interior to a more spacious mid tower case as said before with liquid cooling after doing some research that is.
year 2007 360 units comming out with a cooler runing cpu? this is what i've been hearing i don't know if it's true...i bought a 360 for GRAW after playing and not like GRAW i returned my 360 for a refund and the game rental back to block buster...i;m back on my xbox 1 with the only true ghost recon game.........GR2 .......
