Has anyone ever tried recreating a GR experience by playing paintball? Any tips?
One of my teammates wants us to try it for real sometime.
Are the guns heavy?
Does it hurt when you get hit?
Is it hard to aim?
I think it?ll be very different than right or left trigger. Yeah? No? Not that I?m a pussy or anything. I just don?t want to make a fool of myself when I get out there. So any feedback?d be great!

Yes, it smarts pretty good when you get hit. But it all depends on where you get hit and what the velocity the guns are set at, typically 300 feet per second or less. Faster than that is dangerous. All the fields I played at were very strict, and you had to chrono (test the speed of) your gun before you could play. The best place to get shot is in the face (as long as you're wearing a mask) as you don't feel it. Wink

No, it's really not that hard to aim. You can easily see the balls flying through the air, so it's pretty easy to adjust your fire angle. This can work to your advantage as you can dodge the balls heading your direction, if you're quick enough. Wink

I don't play anymore, but used to. One time I got pegged in the top of my left forearm and it hurt like a biatch. Not so much when it happened, but a while later.

A word of advice from experience: wear a protective cup with an athletic support, or you'll be like this: Crying

I hope by paintball, you mean RAP4. If not then shame on the "GR paintball" veterans. Angry Blue Guy

You don't recreate military scenarios with regular paintball guns. Either go with airsoft or RAP4.

-Pain
I don't find that it hurts too much under most playing conditions. Usually, you either have adrenaline going and I don't notice or I don't expect it and the pain is over quickly enough that it doesn't matter much. Paintballs tend to leave welts that I often, but not always have little bruises where I got shot the next day. I do tend to be a bit sore the next day regardless of whether I got shot, probably because I'm not particularly athletic. If it's not too hot I wear thick baggy clothing, it helps keep make things hurt a bit less and paintballs are more likely to bounce off. 285 feet per second seems to be the ideal speed. The velocity is high enough that the balls break, but not so high that it really hurts.

It's probably best to restrain from shooting your friends within 10-15 feet if you can help it. If not, it's a lot nicer to shoot them in the shoe (though I've played at fields where arms and below the knees were not valid targets). At close range it's possible the lens on their mask, so I avoid shooting heads at that range.

-Guns
They can be a bit akward to carry around when fully loaded, but they are generally not too heavy. I use a 100 round hopper because they are lighter, quieter, and I'm usually the guy doing the flanking while my buddies suppress so I don't use much paint. A lot of guns use the airtanks as the gunstock, this can sometimes be akward depending on the gun and the tank.

-Is it hard to aim?
That depends on the gun, but generally not. However, paintguns are inherently innaccurate, and don't tend to hit the same spot every time even when placed in a vice. Some are much less accurate than others, a good barrel will make quite a lot of difference. A lot of guns have sight rails, sights don't help that much within the effective range of a paintball. That said, I've got a variable zoom BB gun scope on my gun. Why, you might ask? It's like having a pair on binoculars and it's pretty good for spotting people before you more through an open area and get shot up.

-Tactics
Shadowskull is right about one thing, you are not going to recreate military scenarios with a regular paintball gun. That said, I don't think it matters unless you are fanatical about that sort of thing (If you are, by all means join the army Wink2). Paintball is still tactical, you use suppressive fire, flanking, etc. The difference is that the effective range is limited to somewhere between 100-200 feet. Paintballs will tend to break on foliage that wouldn't provide much cover against bullets. If you want an experience that resembles Ghost Recon to a resonable degree I would suggest playing in the woods and avoiding speedball.

Thanks orbit22679. I guess I should wrap some pillows around my arms then Wink

ShadowSkullV5:
RAP4 would be soooo cool but I kinda wanna try normal paintball first to see what it is like.

Thoramir:
Thank you so much. That helps me a lot. I will definitely keep the 285 feet per second in mind.
A little bit of pain and some bruises are fine with with me.

My buddy posted a link to this laserwar thing in the UK on his blog - http://frostbyte86.blogspot.com/
Is there anything like that in the US?
He?s really serious about this thing.

How sexist of you. You?ll help me! You think? Maybe we should play on opposite teams then. That way we?ll really get to see who carries who when we play.

That's a lot cheaper than other similar ventures I've seen. I'd try it out in a heatbeat at that price, unfortunately I don't live in the UK.

Warfighters looks AWESOME!!! Wish they had one in the U.S.

The web site says that there will be Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter events in 2007... I wonder if they will have a way to make a cross-com-like head piece where it could point out the vehicles, your team and the other team, all with blue or red diamonds... THAT would be awesome.
