I think third person view is much better than the first, especially in shooters. Third person just seems so much better, which is probably why Capcom Keeps their very successful Resident Evil series in that view much of the time.

I think Silent Hill 4 pulls the same stuff off too, wit' that whole forcibly-switch-the-common-third person view-to-first-all-of-a-sudden, WTF? Yeah, I don't like that one little bit, mate. Its such a mistake. Oops

Metroid is definitely one series that should have never left its third-person roots. I for one, was and still is very upset with the first-person look that it now sustains. Its just silly; why change what made the series popular in the first place? I bet that many old school fans of Metroid ceased ta play them when its changed into that ridiculous first-person we now see as of today. Metroid was never a large favorite of mine, but needless ta say,I know that Nintendo messed up when they degraded the player's view of Samus' body motions in action. It was amazing enough on the NES, just imagine how it could've been on the 'cube. We don't even get the opportunity ta watch Samus perform that lightning-fast somersault in preciously 3D rendered graphics cuz its abruptly first-person. Its just so lame. Sad Eyes

Third person view in-game is great! I use it myself; suites me and my players well.

First person shooters are called first person shooters for a reason. If not, we would be playing third person shooters (like Splinter Cell which I do play). I along with many others prefer to keep the 2 genres seperated.

Rogue Spear had the option to go into TPV.

Ok. Now I seem to remember something about that.

I didn't remember it before, because I never used it.

Yeah me neither. The TPV was poorly executed.

Then again, I think all game that have TPV are poorly executed. Veryhappy

Remember, fans were upset about third person view as people tended to use it as a cheat to see around corners (bunkers comes to mind). RSE then added the option to force first person view with Urban Ops (and the following expansions in the RS line).

RSE smartly decided to leave any third person view out of GR, but went back 3 steps with the implentation of the over the shoulder view in GR2 (more arcade like and a way for people to cheat again  ).

I actually don't care about the viewpoint, and I usually like to leave it to default setting. Besides, in some games the guns look awfully unrealistic.Anyone here play Halo? Because if you do, maybe you'll understand view doesn't matter at all.

Exactly!! And if I may add to that, my feelings are that there are "games", and then there are GR and R6 (well, WERE). These two series are unique not only because of their realism, but also because they were both instant classics right from the start, and you don't **** with a winning formula like that, especially when the entire structure of the gameplay is altered if you go from FPV to 3PV. Ya I know R6 had the 3PV option, but removing that was actually A FIX. They corrected a mistake.

I don't hate 3PV, in some games I like it and it's appropriate. For example SC benefits from the unrealistic ability to see over and around objects because it is not a SQUAD shooter and you have no one to cover your blind spots, whereas GR and R6 are squad based and you should be able to cover your sector just fine in FPV. Not to mention that realism is not a game making/breaking factor for SC, unlike the realism-based tactical shooters.
Other games that are fine for 3PV are fantasy and fiction-based games where realism is not a factor and it's better to just have a nice view of the action to enjoy, like the Oblivion 3PV, it's fantasitc.
