Hi all

I recently started using GameCam Lite to make my LOMAC movies and they all suffered from very bad artifiacting/banding.

I then tried the trial version of Fraps and even though the movies are only 30secs long, they are MUCH clearer and sharper than in GameCam.

Anyone else had experience with either of these programs? I think that Fraps will now be my tool of choice.

Thanks

Well, GameCam doesn't seem to slow down my in game recordings.

Did you say your trial of Fraps allows you to record more than 30secs worth of video? It would be nice to be able to record more than that with the trial version. Maybe include a watermark on the recording like GameCam does.

What version of Fraps are you using? My understanding is that the trial version only records 30secs of video.

How are you able to record more than that using the trial version?

Fraps Version 2.6.0 you must pay for. The most current version of Fraps is 2.7.2
http://www.fraps.com/download.php

Dix3 might have got his version 2.6.0 from limewire, or some other shareware website.

The trial version 1.9D is free.

As far as 30 secs at a time thing, you can stop and re-start the capture as many times you need to. Remember your captures shouldn't be more then 10 to 20 sec per capture anyway... Big Grin

Watermarks can be crop out when you do your editing portion.
VirtualDub, or any video editing program like Vegas, or Premiere can do it easily.

Best Regards

Can the 1.9D version record more than 30secs worth of video? Do you know if it is still available for downloading?

Thanks!

I believe Version 1.9d is no longer available anymore.

Version 1.9d can only capture 30 sec period.
Once it stop at 30 sec's you just restart it fraps again.

Remember 30 sec is a long time if you think about it.

FRAPS really brings the hammer down on even on powerful computer systems.
It is writing an enormous amount of data onto your harddrive as you record.

The rule of thumb in filmmaking is shots or scenes shouldn't be longer than 7 to 15 sec tops.

Best Regards

I downloaded 1.9D and it seemed to record more than 30secs, though during the playback, the scene didn't seem to be centered.

7-15 secs doesn't seem to be much time to really setup a scene. I mean, it may be good for a dogfight scene etc, but something complex, is that really enough time?

Also, it would take, I think, double the amount of takes to get the right "shot" than if you shot the scene over a longer period and just did fewer takes of that same scene.

That's the process I did for my second movie, although I admit, that a 17min movie was not what I thought I would end up with.

Thanks for all the great info. I will try the 7-15sec "rule" and see how that pans out.

Capt I'm not a expert in making Lomac movies.

Most of the movies are IL-2 Forgotten Battles.

When I talk about the 7 to 15 sec rule I'm talking about using Fraps only. Fraps should not be use in capturing entire LockOn movie. Remember a 2 to 3 minute capture using Fraps can wobble up as much as a full 1 Gb of your hardrive space!

Like IL-2, LockOn should have a built-in recorder. IL-2 has this. You should be able to record or captured your entire mission'(s) you want to fly.

Then I play back the tracks using the built-in recorder, then I use fraps to capture just scenes or tracks I want to edit later. The 7 to 15 sec per scene rule does not applied to the built-in recorder in Lomac, or even IL-2. I hope this makes sense to you.

When using Fraps 1.9d (free version) it will leave a watermark on top of your scene or track.
You can use your video editor, or VirtualDub to crop them off. Remember you want your movie to be clean any icons, or watermarks to give your movie that professional look... Big Grin

If you look back at older posts, there is alot of great info on this subject.

Good luck on your movie.

That's what I did for my current movie. I simply divided the whole mission into smaller parts and then filmed those scenes. I then edited those down to the ones I like and then made my movie from them.

I really am beginning to like Fraps over GameCam, namely because the replay is much less artifacted than when I use GameCam.

LockON doesn't need Fraps or any 3rd party Capture. Just do all the Camera editing within LockON and use the built in AVI tool to covert to video. Then use a movie editor to finish your video and compress using DIVx. Wink2
