He Guys maybe someone has heard about this before and can help me out
I've been building *.avi clips now for some time and except for some codec trouble (codecs suddenly didn't want to work anymore) everything was fine except for now...... My codec's work now I've checked, Lock on works (afcourse !), adn my pc says that everything about audiocard, videocard, drivers, memory, hardrive etc.. is fine but..... When I want Lock on or ACA screenrecorder to build a *.avi I get the following results: 1) in Lock on after the progress bar is at around 80% I already hear the sound of my plane engine (this shouldn't be premature of the actual screen) then it shows very fast a hud with a grass green cockpit and then it stops saves audio very fast and returns to Lock on. 2) in ACA screenrecorder I get a clip that has audio but no videoimage just a black screen What's this ?....... Again the codec's are showing fine.... |

Indeed I have seen a similar problem with similar symptoms. I'll try to find it for you and let you know what to do.
Not sure if the problem was resolved though. ::EDIT:: What version of LO are you running? |

Lock on 1.03 ? I believe well anyways not flaming cliff Richard

Umm, not sure what you're getting at.
LO v 1.01 and 1.02 were free to download. LO v 1.1 and 1.12a Flaming Cliffs were payware. You can identify which one you've got by taking a look in your C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Eagle Dynamics\LockOn folder, it will have a readme of your highest version and previous versions. Can you check for me? Also, if under the "Lock On" title name in the main menu of the game after it starts up, there may be Flaming Cliffs |

What you do is press F9 (or a desired key) when you want to begin recording. Shots can only last something like 29 seconds max, but if you make lots of 29 second screens you can put them together in Windows Movie Maker or Vegas 6.0. Adobe Premiere is the best though. I don't reccomend Ulead, it creates poor quality images, although, the files are tiny, even with audio tracks, etc. Here's the link for FRAPS. http://www.fraps.com/download.php It's what a lot of people are using. I don't think i'm going to find an answer to your problem. Sorry I've tried... If I come across something over the net I'll let you know. |

I've Lock on retail version (bought in shop) which is patched till 1.03 so this version has no flames I believe Lock on Flaming Cliffs is a Mod that has become officially supported and can now be bought from internet and has some improvements over Lock on "normal" (retail version) |

Fraps is in how it works pretty mutch the same as ACA screenrecorder Lock on and ACA screen recorder are ok I get no images or frames in my movies lately (whatever I use) so this would also not be solved by using Fraps And my ACA screen recorder has also unlimited (except at some point my computer says no !) recording time so I'm not bonded to 30s clips but can continue as long as I Like I payed for this programm a little and it has worked fine (it's still working fine but now I don't see movie just sound with black or dark purple background). Have you tried FRAPS? That will great fairly good video image, a tad large, no where near as massive as the AVI's created by Lock On... Mission files can be corrupt. And trackfiles can become corrupt after too much editing. This happens sometimes. If LockOn works fine, and then some afternoon just fails rendering a trackfile I blame the trackfile. And I backtrack and redo the video editing or record a new trackfile. I don't wonder what is wrong with LockOn and try make LockOn render the file anyway. Start over and delete the trackfile you have.

If this is the case then why can I play in Lock on the orgininal trackfile and the edited trackfile and see that it works fine (all trackfiles and mission work fine )? but when I want to make an *.avi either in lock on or other type of *.avi outside lock on using ACA screenrecorder it crashes I think it is something else like driver **** or codec **** or even some windows **** ? Problem is my computer tell's me everything is fine that I checked. I also noticed this little thing, that the audio speeker icon right below in the taskbar doesn't pop-up on start up but my AC97 icon from the sound card does, I used to have both. Maybe my computer is slowly dying of old age ? (>3 years old now ) or there could be a little nasty dwarf in there bugging me ? |

I get these errors too. For example LockOn records no video but jumps directly to sound recording. Another is LockOn plays the trackfile correctly but when rendering AVI the bombs don't hit the target as they do when playing the trackfile. Another one is LockOn can not render the trackfile if I start rendering at time 1:28, but if I start rendering at 1:25 it works just fine. The AVI tool is unstable. CODECs can also be unstable. Some CODECs don't accept all formats. LockOn don't run the CODECs properly either, for example an AVI rendered using any CODEC can not be opened in AVISynth. But if the AVI is opened in VirtualDub and recompressed using the -->very same<-- CODEC it can now be opened in AVISynth. So my conclusion is LockOn does not drive the CODECs properly. I am prepared for, or is used to, propblems with the AVI tool, and if I redo tracks and try different settings and or CODECs I can most of the time get it to work, sometimes not.

Yep that descripes exactly what happens but then it must be a codec problem ? as *avi's that I try to make with ACA screenrecorder also fail to show images but only play sound showing a black or dark purple screen.
Does anybody now (from experience ? ) what codec's are more or less stable and are running ok ? Thanks ! |
||||
|
I've tried everything now from reinstalling the game to reinstalling the codecs to trying out new codec's nothing helps even with a programm like ACA screenrecorder (works same as fraps)
nothing helps And the tracks / missions seem to be ok and can be played back / used fine so... IIIIIIIIIIII'm desperate !!!!!!!!!! $#^@%$&^&* |

For anyone who has experienced codec trouble or trouble with *.avi's I wound these: -avitoolbox -afreecodec VT2 -videoinspector -and KC softwares crash detective !!!!!!!!!!! I'm gone try these ones out see if they can find the problem and fix it all these and KC software claims they can !!!!!!!! I think also that it has something to do with the new version of windows mediaplayer I recently installed it might f#ck up the original windows codecs like Windows codec mpeg 1 to 3 ?? I'll let you all know what happens..... Ralf Thanks for the help so far anyway ! |

I remember now I had a CODEC problem earlier with LockOn "crashing" when trying to render AVIs. Then, at that time, LockOn crashed 100% gurranteed everytime I tried render AVI. I don't remeber if LockOn CTDed or went back to the main menu. But I reasoned LockOn crashed while it was gathernig the list of CODECs available cause LockOn crahed before I even got to the menu where I fill in the CODEC I want to use and the resolution and time to start rendering.
I had installed software to be able to make DVDs out of LockOn .avi files and to have some fun with DVD movies. I uninstalled all "foreign" CODECs and checked that LockOn was functioning again, then installed the necessary lossless CODECs again step by step so I ended up with a working system again. |

I've a slightly different situation i guess i did install new software for a dvd burner but lock on can still see all the codec's i run the codec checkers that i found yesterday and let them check a freshly made "crashed movie" they said there was nothing wrong with the codecs (?) so it must be Lock on or even more likely (?) the communication between lock on and the codecs but then I'm wondering why is aca screenrecorder still bugging and refusing to make movies from my screen (no matter what's running If I try to record Steel Beasts Pro PE I get a movie without sound and from other software a blackscreen with sound) that actually won't show something other then a black screen with sound ? I think it must be pc's -of old age like what 1-2 years or more ?- and windows ? #@%!^%@^& |

I used one of the codec checkers now and found that the 3ivx codec missed some files and that my system sounds didn't work I repaired these then I noticed that Lock on still refuses to build avi's but that ACA screen recorder did manage to build a clip again but only crashed because it said it couldn't align the sound with the clip or something anyways it is still a mess to fix this or to find out what it really is that is wrong. |

today I created another track and this one works ! strangely enough moreover (probably after using pctools pc tweaker for gaming ??? ) my pc was able to create a avi in about 50% of the time it normally takes for it and the settings and result don't show any difference with previous clips so indeed I must asume my other track file must somehow indeed be corrupt enough to crash during avi building or so strange matter... |

MSU lossless codec. It loads the CPU moer than the others cause it is the lossless codec that squeezes the AVI file the most. And one bad thing about the hard compression (lossless compression) is that no information is inserted into the file to allow for easy seeking in the file. But it is stable and it compresses the file hard. XViD is stable too as long as no exotic features are enabled and setting is "general purpose" or whatever the name for that setting was. I was very tempted to turn on "global motion tracking" since there is an awful lot of that going on in flightsim scenes where the landscape behind is sliding past and XViD perhaps could just slide one image to the side and fill in the new info. But unfortunately XViD while playing back all too easily loose track of what is going on and the screen gets filled with garbage. If it had worked the compression would have becommed even harder. So these are the only two codecs I use these days since XViD beats the old DivX in my opinion. Microsoft codecs are not bad either, actually really good for small video frames and look better if really really hard compression is used. I haven't check that thoroughly but it is just the impression I have gotten from looking at some vids compressed with their codecs. |
