Does anyone know what the determining factor is for your character's rank? Is it based on skill points, honor points, hours played? What are the thresholds for each rank? What is the maximum rank achievable? I assume there are no officer grades, therefore the top rank would be Sergeant Major, or Command Sergaent Major, both of which are E-9 grade.
I'm not trying to be a rank-whore. It's just that I usually don't know I've ranked up until sometime after the fact. There was a day when you could have found answers in the game documentation, but with the six-page manuals they give us nowadays, there isn't room to tell very much.

I think it is based on total honor points. I have two buddeis that are SGT and have about 15000hp. Also if you are a Unit leader it jumps you up to SGM automatically.
Sergeant Major would most likely be the highest rank. Because like the 1st Sergeant and the Master Sergeant (E-8).There is one 1SG for a company level which in this game (Unit I believe) then most likely there will not be a Command Sergeant Major because that is battalion level and up.

don't forget Sergeant Major of the Army but I am pretty sure there is only one of those.. :-)

I'm hoping that now that the game is out that someone (Randy?) from the dev-team would come by and answer some of these types of questions. Someone who has inside knowledge instead of community members speculating or determining answers based on trial and error. I'm not saying that those (member's) efforts are unappreciated... just saying that someone from the dev-team could probably provide more definitive answers with less time/effort.
Just popping in to clear up any confusion and put an end to the speculation about the Rank system...
Honor Points Determine Rank
One rank system is used in both Single and Multiplayer
- Players progress through the seven base ranks outside of Unit/Clans
-- Honor Point thresholds determine Rank Advancement
--- The chart below displays the available ranks and honor point thresholds
Rank ---- Reach ---- Drop to
PV2 ------- 0 -------- 250
PFC ------ 500 ------ 2000
SPC ----- 2500 ------ 4000
CPL ----- 5000 ------ 7000
SGT ----- 8000 ----- 11000
SSG ---- 12000 ----- 17000
SFC ---- 18000 ----- 25000
MSG ---- 26000 ------ N/A
-- The Reach number is the minimum number of honor points the player must earn in order to obtain the specified rank.
-- The Drop to number sets a threshold that the player must drop back below before he can drop back to a prior rank.
--- For example, a player earns 500 honor points and becomes a PFC. If he loses 1 honor point, he does not immediately drop back down to PV2. Instead, he must lose 250 honor points to become a PV2 again.
-- The fuzziness of this boundary prevents players from teetering at the edges of ranks and constantly going up and down rank level if a dishonorable action (Friendly Fire) occurs in a mission.
Unit Commanders and Officers get new Rank names
-- The Commander of the Unit would have the Rank of Sergeant Major (SGM)
--- This becomes your official displayed rank in the game
-- The Officers will all be First Sergeants (FSG)
--- This becomes your official displayed rank in the game
-- In a Unit, the regular members display their “earned” rank.
