is that the ONLY mode this game has? i love the game but thats pretty weak. thoughts?

Not at all.
Mainly it's a MP game for Xbox Live.
However, you can also go into MP, local play, and run the campaign missions (actual missions, not more training) as well as several other gametypes. For the campaign missions, the game gives you AI teammates.
Playing it all on Live is the meat of the game though.
