Phobias are a real (and very serious) issue. I am kind of scared of very large packs of bugs. But many people are acrophobic (scared of spiders)
Best thing is just to do it when your wide awake and take some chocolate with you and do it slowly . Save after each spider you kill.

O my God,first we are afraid of spiders and now we are afraid of water?? Hammer
What will be next?
Somebody will come and say:"When i was young i was attacked by seagulls and since then im afraid of them. Sad
And here i was playing Dark Messiah!
What a cool game i said to myself!
That was until i arrived at the island! Nuh uh
I jumped out of the boat and there he was standing right in front of me! Crying just like 12 years ago! Twisted
He had red eyes and white fedders!
I just pass out and when i woke up i was back in Stonehelm!I cant remember anything!!
Those bloody seagulls Crying"
Get over it people!
I think this is the reason that this game isnt selling how it should:because of the spiders and the deep waters!
People are too afraid to play it Profile Sad
Too Happy

Hah, i have completed the game many times, and it's one of the best action RPG's i have ever played. Besides, the game does not require you to swim or dive anywhere. Water is more of an added effect in it if you ask me.

Mekekekekeke, this is THE thread! Hammer
Mr_Putter, try to remind yourself that this is just a game. I mean - be afraid in the real world as much as you want, but don't blame one game for the unpleasant effect of your phobias. Do you know how... silly (I'm avoiding stronger words) it sounds to say that something scares you in a game and you want it "fixed"?! Why do you play the damn thing, watch "The Little Pony" or something not so frightening instead. And please - avoid games like "Undying".
No offence. No, really.

Phobias are different than being easily scared in general. They are something so primitive and instinct based that you can't control the fear, even if you'd want to. For example, i dont find many horror games that scary (Penumbra: Overture for example), but when faced with a situation where i have to dive or swim through a large body of water in a game, i completely freeze up.

And for the record, i am not scared of the water itself, but more of what might be IN the water.

He wasn't blaming the game for anything btw. Just asking if there was somekind of patch or fix to make the spiders easier/disappear.

OK, I'm not using the term correctly, I agree. But it's stupid nontheless. Phobia or "ordinary" fear, something shouldn't be excluded from the game just becouse there are people who find it too frightening. Becouse, you see, many people are afraid of close spaces - now stop making games where the character walks through some mine or air shafts (Half-Life will be among the first victims). You're afraid of being IN water - should this mean games with no swimming? Somone is afraid of spiders - immidiately annihilate all the polygons, which represent something with more than 4 legs. Or make a patch to make it "easier to stomach". How many such patches are the devs supposed to make in order to meet the "fear requirements" of the human race? They have to be above countless, I'll tell you that.

Asking a patch to remove something is a bit drastic, i agree. But condemning someone stupid because he is afraid of something he did not choose to be afraid of is just... stupid.

But all in all, i agree with you. Games are games, and they shouldn't be changed if someone happens to be scared of something in the game.

I have yet to overcome my fear of water (or the things that might be lurking in it mostly), and frankly i think that i never will. I have even left many games incompleted because progression in the game would require swimming or diving.

The point i am driving here is, that even tho you might be amused by the fact that someone is scared of something in a game, it is by no means a reason to be disrespectful.

As i have already stated, a phobia is by no means a normal state of fright which you can just brush aside with the statement "This is not real". It's a state of mind which reduces you to only thinking of fleeing and panicking. When confronted by a scary situation which is not related to a persons phobia, then the "This is not real" trick can work. But with phobias, ignoring the fear is not a possibility.

Therapy? who has spoken anything about that? We have merely been discussing about the spiders and other game elements that might be scary to some players.

If this was a therapy thread, we would be guessing the origins of the phobias and start trying to heal them.

No, this is not a therapy thread. Merely a thread discussing scary game elements.

Because the game, games in general are, built to appeal to our real emotions and instincts, otherwise nobody would be playing them.

Beating the game (=killed all enemies and monsters) gives us the illusion of being a superhero. In real life, NOone would reach the end of the story alive, in real life ONE of such spider would scare the hell out of every gamer, maybe a few would survive only by sheer luck, and then killed by a Goblin. Big Grin

People who are making fun of others who are admitting their fears, are only ignoring their own fears.

In the "real world" there are no Goblins and (so) giant spiders. Big Grin Or at least we haven't found them yet. Razz
This is hardly about ignoring your own fears by... laughing at the fears of the others or whatever. I'll be trivial and say - everyone fears something. Some people fear many things, other - fewer. But what the hell has this to do with the games? There's alcoholess beer, but I don't think they'll ever invent a game, which doesn't include something scary for someone. A game, where you fight something, that is. Restricting the devs with someone's phobias will eventually lead to "Teletubbies"-like products or some other perversion (which by the way scares me).

LOL
this could be another reason to give us SDK (**** Ubi or whatever).

Extract the whole models folder from mm_models_pub.gcf file (search other posts for how-to) in the model folder you will find a folder named "npc" in which you'll find the monsters folders.

Open the npc_spider_regular.qct file in the spider_regular folder (there's a .qct file for each monster) with notepad, scroll down until "npc_health" then set its value to 1.
You're allowed to tamper others settings to.

Repeat the same with whichever monster could scare you...

I had a bug where all the water turned white. Just as well i guess.
There is one bit where you have to dive into the water. Before the bit that goblins are talking about fine orcish cuisine.

Sorry but phobias are hard to understand unless you have them

Speaking of thirsty, literally a half hour ago I looked down at my soda can (sheesh, I drink soda VERY rarely; this must be a punishment from on high) and a little spider was clinging to the side. Took him/her outside.

I totally understand the phobia bit. Spiders are crazy little things too. They're good luck to have in your house (so they say) and they eat bugs, but it's best for us all when they don't walk on you at night.

Okay, you know what they say about phobias: the recommended treatment is by exposure to the stimulus. So, here's the cutest (girl) spider I know of:

(WARNING: THIS IS A FUZZY SPIDER)

See, that looks to me like a little bundle of happiness.

<3

In the game, anyway, I decided that archery worked best against the little spiders since I was getting hit by them. Maybe I should've used the staff.

Addition: Gahh, took my last swallow of pop and was convinced the spider was back in there. $%Y(&@ thankfully it wasn't, but I wish that last bit of drink could've been more pleasant going down Wink

Well, well- seems this board has some real Jackasses, for all you idiots that make fun of people for their phobias- go to hell, I know everyone has a phobia of something or another and chances are it will catch up to you someday. I have a minor Phobia of Spiders my own self as well as the other aforementioned phobia of deep water (god I hate the movie the Abyss). However that is not to suggest that I think by any stretch that the spiders should be removed or the water (which is absolutely gorgeous)- I really hated those levels with the spiders but after I got past them I felt exilerated that I had conquered them. To the OP, whether you like it or not cheap scares are here to stay as they do exactly what they are intended to do. If you were scared by the spiders then the devs were successful in designing them. While you may not have appreciated getting scared to all hell and completely locking up as the little (or should I say huge) *******s jumped in your face but for some people getting scared- yes even facing their phobias can be fun and so the devs design it that way on purpose.
