I have the Dark Messiah Demo installed. How it got there is a mystery, but it's in my Vista > Cpanel > Programs (the old Add remove Programs). When I click to Uninstall it, that %#$% Steam panel loads up, spends about 3 minutes up and downloading stuff (the modem is just Sending/receiving) and then nothing. Steam sits there adverstising a bunch of games. The only game in My Games on the Steam window is Half-Life 2 Episode One
I looked in the Valve/Steam and all sub folders of Valve and there is no DMD there, and a search of the whole computer - still no DMD. I'd like to get it off and out of the Add/remove but every attempt brings up the Paranoid Steam interface with commercials. I think that is called popup spam in most circles. I'm concerned, gfrom reading other stuff about dark messiah, that if I don't get the demo off, I will suffer the same grief others have in that Steam will cut them out and their full version be worth zip. Any tips on getting DMD off? I'm not worried about editing the Registry manually if that is what it will take to ensure DMD is gone and full version installs. Also, is there a way to install DM Full version without Steam taking over the computer for 5 minutes when ever loading the game, as it does with HL2-Episode 1? |

Did you buy the full version, the DVd or through Steam? It is not clear from your post which version you are planning to install.
If the demo is not in the My Games list, it is probably not installed. To be sure, open the Steam directory, search for the demo folder if it exists. In Registry, find a demo key if it exists in [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Source] xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx BlindNero Forums for online Dark Messiah MM and other games support |

That's just it. What I've read via Google searches has me worried with the Demo being there. I'm not sure what to buy and my expereince is that even with the CD/DVD(?), Steam will get involevd and that's where the problem comes in. I certainly will NOT be buying it via Steam!
I never heard of Steam until I bought and tried to install HL2-Ep1. Then I had to buy a scanner, scan in a pic of the CD, and back of the CD with the bar code, and a copy of my receipt and email that in jpeg to them before they would let me get far enough past the install to play the game. I don't want to go through that again! I think the Dark Messiah Demo was installed via Steam - only way I would have installed it. The Demo is NOT in the Steam popup My Games list. It IS in the Add/Remove programs via Vista Control Panel. As explained, when trying to UNinstall from there, Steam pops up and runs all the game ads with NO uninstall showing anywhere. I guess they just won;t let me UNinstall DM! To your suggestions: There is no Folder for Dark Messiah in the Steam folder, or anywhere on my Comp. BUT, in the Registry, there is lots of stuff under Might and Magic, and in the "Source" key, there is MM (Might and Magic?) and of course, a list of all the Ads details I bothered to click on - is nothing private - sigh! MM has "User Tokens" data, and 27 datas under the Steam/Source/MM key I think it is there. I looked over the DMessiah web site as far as I could before it locked up my browser and if memory serves me right, I had Steam UNinstall it because the Demo locked up. I'm running the new flaky Vista on a brand new machine 2.4Ghz 2x64 Dual Core with 2 Gig ram on a 320 Gig drive (loads of space left yet) under Nvidia Geo 6150LE. It's possible, even probable that Steam couldn't UNinstall it properly - it looks that way. Why, when I use Add/Remove to UNinstall, Steam pops up, uses 70% of the CPU for 15 seconds hogs the network sending and receiving unknown data for another 30 seconds and then only the Steam popup ads appears is beyond me. In "Tools" in the Steam popup, there is a Dark Messiah listing, all regarding a "dedicated server" and all with Status "Not installed". I've considered uninstalling Steam, and my one game that put that little demon on here, that being HL2 - Episode 1, but I've also read that people doing so run into problems with Steam later denying them access to the game/s when re-installing them clean. I'm itching to get into DM, but won't risk the one game that does work at all - for now. This is such a mess. And the crux is, I didn't do it. Thanks for your patience - I've totally lost mine with Steam. |

Simple; buy the DVD version!
What you describe with scanning the bar code and copy your receipt etc, that is not used today anyway! It sounds rediculous! But again: buy the DVD version. For the multiplayer you need Steam through which it is downloaded and installed. The DVd version you install (and keep) outside steam, then apply both patches from ubisoft.com. Indeed, Steam doesn't manage to uninstall games properly. After you uninstalled the normal way (if possible), open your Steam directory and simply manually delete remaining Dark Messiah folders (if they're there). Then remove the [HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Valve\Source\mm] key. Please read this thread: DARK MESSIAH Installation and Troubleshooting Instructions Btw, just for fun i started downloading from Steam the DM demo. It turns out to be the FULL game that is coming in atm. Don't ask me why, i don't know. xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx BlindNero Forums for online Dark Messiah MM and other games support |

Thanks - that got it off the Add/Remove. Actually, Steam made me jump those e-hoops and hurdles with the bar code copies only last March. I ran into problems when installing HL2-Ep1 and Steam insisted it was not a legit copy. It WAS! Bought it right off a store shelf of a national retailer. But, try and tell them that! Took 3 weeks before they'd beleive me and give me a key. I like the old days of the Atari 8-bit! Steam puts the customer through too much Hades when it's the pirates they should punish.
Well, I hope I don't have the same problems with the DM DVD I've read of others having with Steam running on their computers. If you don't hear back from me by weekend, you'll know I'm too busy playing DM I'll trust your techineze and buy the DVD version of DM. I |
