You should be able to model with 3ds max for DM as long as you have Cannonfodder or Wunderboy plugins with you... at least for static props 'cause you haven't to add bones. I guess DM changed something about animations so without SDK...  (PS. Arkane it's fall... as Duke Nukem said "What are you waiting for, Christmas?")

You'll need the importers and exporters from the above mentioned post.
However i haven't seen importers for Max9.
The animations are stored in a different .mdl file and are referenced in the models .mdl file via the .qc file.
You'll need to import the pow - kai model, merge it with your model then delete the poi - kai and skin your model to those bones.
Easier way is to use Milkshape3D, but the last time i used it, it didn't support more than 1 vertex per bone.

well i have been told elsewhere that the retail version of 3ds max, ((( which is the one i stupidly spent my $3000 buying not knowing i could have got it for $2500 without the plug-ins i don't use  dumb me... ))) that there is supposed to be a plug-in coming that supposedly includes scripts for games from the "ORANGE BOX", such as Portal, T.F. 2 and Episode two... but no news yet as to whether or not DMOMM will be supported from anyone i've talked to elsewhere. i figured that perhaps someone in the community had already attempted it and thusly had some input as to how i would take my raw files and convert them to files i might be able to use in the *cough* "SDK" *cough* that currently exists for messiah... i actually already found the texture i want to use from the pow kai and have started making my skin, as for 1984's suggestion of using the original pow kai bones... it wont work with my replacement as i would need to add too much to the original animation to make it work with my model, so i am animating it seperatly, slowly and painfully...  ...... so if anyone knows of an animation program that works better than 3ds max i would appreciate it... p.s. UBI is really loosing allot of customers over this... in my city we actually have a boycott going on all UBI games that currently is up to 600 members supposedly... this is only what a fellow gamer has told me, but i believe it knowing how many people are waiting for THAT G.D. SDK WE WERE SUPPOSED TO GET 6 MONTHS AGO!!!!!!! hell i probably wont even buy HAZE when i comes out simply because it has the logo of the devil on it. and thats a game i've been waiting for since the first news i heard on it months ago. i've refused to even DL UBI content, considering i would like to work for a gaming company one day, and i wouldn't want to work for free, so i wont make the guys there now do so...

Dark Messiah seems to have some EP1 technologies so both HL2 and EP1 models work... You don't need any specific plug ins for the games like the orange box ones. You just need to use the general source ones like for HL2. And yes that SDK is MIA... I am waiting for it myself  ..

They gave Mana a partial SDK, which can be used for skins and junk, but not the full SDK to completely remodle multyplayer. Like we have stated earlier, if they let Mana remodle the multyplayer, they could use the design to creat a sequal and make big bucks. We both get what we want, UBI and the others get the $$$, we get the game, AND MANA GETS THE GLORY!!!

Try the XSI mod tool if you don't want to use Max. However there are certain limitations to this such as the amount of polies you can export, but its worth taking a look at.
cdg.net/forums has a good resource community for modding source.
