Unbelievable yet true: still retards coming on the official forum saying they pirated.

Slowdown is caused by a Steam corruption. Solution: completely reinstall Steam (including registry, instructions thread).

Please Nero tell us why Steam corrupts only with DM then, if not a bad game coding issue.

Why the average PC user must deal with registry (notice the average Vista user don't know even what's a register) in order to play an old game?

Blame UBI instead, 'cause they offer a game with no support, discounted on Steam only 'cause no other store on earth would have sell it anymore.

Fender what's happened to you? Confused Why so negative? The game is available in all stores (that sell games) in my town, priced between € 7,- and € 15,-, and Steam price is in between.

Steam corruption does not exclusively happen with DM. That impression could rise if one only reads complaints on a single forum. Fact is it also happens with Assassin's Creed, and with any other game distributed through Steam, it also happens with Counter Strike, Half-Life 2 and the Episodes. It seems to not matter which game, but rather when it was added. If i knew what exactly is the corruption i'd also knew an easier fix. But i don't.
But it's not hard to figure:
Who wants to redownload all their Steam games again. I have 16 Steam games. That is very modest. Most users have many many more. But my Steam directory is 58,6 GB large. Although i have ADSL i'd rather not download them all again which easily takes 8 hours during busy times.
Many people (including me) have copied the entire Steam directory from one PC to another, installed an old version of Steam (from an installer they had stored on the PC, unaware it was outdated), or restored old Steamapps folder, later mixed with newer installations of a game. But when launched, first thing Steam does is activating so you get a new mix in the .blob file. All these actions together can cause corruptions. Steam has to update itself every now and then to add/configure/reconfigure new functions, and it doesn't always turn out right.
Recently i reinstalled Vista64. Installed a quite recent version of Steam, then pasted my Steamapps folder. I could run every game in offline mode, but all were in "downloading paused" state in My Games list. I got the fix from the Valve forums which involved to temporarily allow the beta Steam to be installed, and then restore to the previous Steam again and voilá all games suddenly were 100% completed. Steam is a dynamic application, a multi-user platform with 32-bit and 64-bit versions, all kinds of security protections and cache-dynamics.

Another thing: DM is based on Valve's own Source engine, which is different to games they just distribute via the platform. I have the DVD version installed but typically my Steam detects its presence even though i never allow it to update/adopt it through the Steam platform. So in my Registry i have Ubisoft keys and Valve keys both referring to the same game, that is probably a legality issue.

Once i had that slowdown too (with once i mean on one PC but it happened everytime i played it) on a PC where i had the Steam version of DM singleplayer next to the DVD version singleplayer and could run both; the slowdown happened on the Steam version.

I'm not negative, I'm sad Crying
and still waiting for the damn SDK...

I don't know how many Steam installer release are there; I installed the very first Steam release with HL2 bundled with my ATI9800 then reinstalled it when I went Vista64, by the installer included in some ATI driver more or less 1 year ago.
It's on my 2nd HD, and I simply launch it every Windows reinstall, type my user name and password and that's it, no issues so far.

It's curious you named Assassin Creed, another UBI game whisper
And it's curious (and somewhat boring) that a new bunch of threads complaining the same old issues spawned on the forum toghether the Steam/UBI offer.
I think if UBI got a new money revenue, could at least have polished the game, couldn't they?

Again since the Source engine was used, I really wished a section in the forum where learning some editing tips and sharing maps, like many other Source forums out there.
You only find complains about PC not healthy, and people that should have bought a console instead in the maps and mod section too.
I guess they should know the game is NOT Vista compatible and they might have some issues with XP too.

It's really sad, today I could download a new Quake1 SP map pack.

I've got this same problem, I've had it for a long time. I would really like to see a fix for this once and for all. Completely re-installing Steam is just crazy talk, I have almost 150 gb of Steam games, and people are saying it doesn't even work. I installed a new version of Steam when I switched to Vista anyway, and it made no difference. I own 75 games on Steam, ranging from Commander Keen to Crysis Warhead. Every single game works without a problem. All except for one. This is something UbiSoft or Arkane need to fix, because it's unacceptable. I'm not holding my breath, though.

Exact same problem here.

My config :
Pentium dual core E5200 @2.50GHz
ram : 2,00 Go
With a radeon HD 4800, 512 mg
Win XP

The game runs perfectly well ( graphic detail to max or lowest ) for 3/4 min, then slow down and down until you load a quick save.
No others programs running, fresh install, no virtual drive etc...
Beside, my computer is far enough to run that game.

I can't believe that nothing's done for that bug since they know about it.

Ok, i find a solution.

It appears the problem is steam finally.
But, who wants to reinstall all of his game for one when you're not even sure that spending hours and hours on your computer will solve the problem ?

So, i bought the DVD version, but of course, SECUROM doesn't recognize my DVD as an original.
That's why i used steam. And i can't go to the shop today cause here it's a "non working day" ( excuse my English ).

So now i tried ( after one day of searching on forum etc... ) to reinstall it from the DVD, and used a no cd to avoid SECUROM problem.
And it's worked, no drop frame etc..
So i'd like to congratulate the dev here, cause you make with those stupid DRM, honest customer forced to use crack and co to play your games. Bravo.

I've had the same problem. Disabled vsync in the nvidia driver panel. Game runs smooth without fps drop now. Hope it stays this way. Wink
Btw. changing vsync setting ingame (switching on/off) helps but fps drops again after a short time so you would have to turn it on and off every minute or so.

//Lev

P.S.: I run the game on a notebook (9500GS/T8300). I get 60+ fps most of the time dropping down to like 30 at some points. Everything maxed out that is. Even midclass notebooks are beefy enough these days to handle source engine based games, let alone 3 years old titles. Things changed a little over the last few years. Wink

Yeah, I finally broke down and tried that (including registry cleaning manual and with CCleaner) and followed all the steps in the BlindNero post (http://www.blindnero.com/forums/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=2&t=2) on how to make the game work too. Nothing has done any good for long. I also tried the heap trick, forced DirectX9, tried various page file sizes, defragged everything repeatedly, updating drivers, etc, etc, etc. Basically an entire weekend devoted to making this game work and following any ideas on all the forums I could find. I don't know for sure if this is really a steam issue or a game issue, but I'm pretty much over it. The game is ok, but it's not worth the time I have already spent trying to fix what either steam or the developers have not bothered to address. If you are wondering, my computer is NOT below the requirements by a long shot, even for maxed settings. I am running this on Vista 64 bit, Intel Core i7 processor (920), Asus P6T MoBo, 6 gigs of system memory, dual Nvidia GeForce GTX 280 video cards, and 1 Terrabyte Raid 0 Harddrive configuration. This computer is only about two months old so anything that has been installed is pretty much up to date, and I double checked everything of relevance just in case. The final verdict. This game (at least through steam) is not even worth the 10 to 5 dollars for many users. If it DID work I would gladly pay 30, maybe more. Oddly, I don't really have any crashing problems (except the one on quit which doesn't bother me.) I just keep dropping to a crawl on frame rates. It seems that some of the work arounds increased the time it takes by a little but that is all.

Yeah. This happens to me too. All my games on steam work finely, perfectly, without any problem. But this one start showing errors in console and then it lags a lot. I will copy here some info about errors at the console.

i advise you to try to set the game to one processor as you are running a dual core processor

Run the game and bring the task manager out, go in to the processes tab and right click on the games name , pick set afinity, select only one CPU in the list and OK

try the game again.

Also change the screen resolution to 1024 x 768 and try it please
