Hey guys,

I recenlty purchased this game and totally regret it. I've got a very annoying problem that makes the game basically useless to me. The problem is that the game will run fine for a while, but will start to slow down ... slower and slower ... until it is CRAWLING. And it's not just my computer being slow - if I simply save the game and reload it, it will run fast again.

I can see that some people have had this problem, but I can see where people have tried to describe this problem and other people have misunderstood it. This is not just general slowness - this is definitely some kind of bug in the game that causes it to run slower and slower, as if it has some kind of memory leak.

I have tried a lot of the stuff that people have suggested in this forum, and in other places, but NONE of it makes a difference.

I have changed video drivers, wiped out Steam, changed the heap size, changed the graphics settings in the game ... none of it helps.

Can anyone help me get this buggy piece of junk working? Also, I have a TON of games installed on my machine and NONE of them have problems.

My specs:

Dell Inspiron E1705 Laptop
Intel T7200 Core 2 Duo @ 2.0 ghz
4GB 667mhz DDR2
NVIDIA GeForce Go 7900GS 256MB (driver 179.48)
Windows Vista 32 SP1 with Microsoft Update enabled

I am using the Steam version of the game.

Does anyone have a solution to this problem????

This is not a problem of the game. This is a Steam problem.

You said you "whiped out Steam" but you apparently have lots of Steam games. So what did you do? Reinstall the version you already had? Newly downloaded?

Try what it says in this thread (second post).

Yes, I "wiped out steam".

1) I backed up all of my Steam games to a folder on my desktop including DMMM.

2) I un-installed Steam.

3) I made sure that C:\Program Files\Steam was completely gone (it was).

(I am a software engineer and have been writing software for windows for over 10 years, and as a result I know how to deal with the registry)

4) I searched the registry for every instance of the word "Steam" and deleted everything that made sense to delete.

5) I searched the registry for every instance of the word "Valve" and deleted everything that made sense to delete.

6) I searched the registry for every instance of the word "Messiah" and deleted everything that made sense to delete.

7) I searched the registry for every instance of the word "MM.EXE" and deleted everything that made sense to delete.

8) Rebooted

9) Downloaded the latest Steam from www.steampowered.com

10) Installed Steam

11) Restored DMMM from my backup into Steam

12) Ran DMMM, left all graphics options alone except I changed the resolution to match my screen

13) I played the game from scratch all the way up until the point where my slowdowns always get bad (that map where you enter a cellar door and head down into the basement of the bad guy's house) and it was STILL SLOW.

So, yes, to answer your questions:

* Yes I completely "wiped out Steam"
* Yes I re-installed from my backup (is this my problem)?

Also, I really don't understand the link you posted. This looks like a solution to a totally different problem. The problem they are dealing with is 'Re: Steam games stuck in "downloading"? Fix!'. This is not my problem - my problem is increasing FPS drop until I save and reload my savegame.

I'm not even sure in what capacity you would mean for me to try those steps ... should I remove DMMM and Steam again and then perform those steps? Or should I just perform those steps and run DMMM again? I'm totally confused about what you think I should do next.

Thanks for your help man.

No, there is no such problem with the game as such. If something like that happens it is caused completely outside the game. For instance, by Steam. Steam is known to have some issues now and then, that live on until people report it and others come with a solution, etc. So the other Steam problem which is the only recent i know of i just felt it could be related to yours.
So it's not.

Other than that, if you read the system requirements list for the game, your CPU is below spec, your laptop as a whole is (as mobile videocards are not fully supported). Also possibly the powersaving options in bios are causing it, also possibly bad ventilation and/or worsened with clogged dust so the overheat protection steps in and slows the system down etc...

Male sure to set the paging file on C:\ to 4096 MB min and max.

If you have a ton of games installed make sure you have enough free disk space (15% at least per partition) left, and that all is fully defragmented.

For the rest, it is too odd for us discussing your PC without even a dxdiag report posted.

You have obviously not been paying attention to CPUs over the last few years. My T7200 Core 2 Duo is *not* below spec.

The CPU requirements for DMMM are as follows:

Minimum: 2.6ghz
Recommended: 3.0ghz

Given those frequencies, plus the release date of the game, it can be concluded that these clock frequencies refer to "Pentium 4"-era CPUs.

There was a shift in CPU architecture within the last few years where Intel and AMD shifted towards designs that use less power but still provide the same (or better) performance. If you've ever studied EE, you might know that higher frequencies always equal higher power consumption - this is true in all electronics. So, in order to lower power consumption, Intel and AMD lowered the clock frequencies of their CPU's and changed the architecture in other ways to make up for it (multiple cores, execution pipeline improvements, larger caches with improved utilization, etc).

The result is that any CPU made within the last few years might have a lower clock frequency than a Pentium 4-era machine, but will actually be faster.

For example, my T7200 (2.0 ghz Core 2 Duo) is a pretty decent match for a 3.0 ghz Pentium 4 or maybe even a 3.2 ghz Pentium 4. And actually, in situations where multiple cores can be utilized, my T7200 would destroy a Pentium 4 that only has Hyper Threading.

For your information, any Intel CPU starting with a "T" (example: T7200) is a mobile Core 2 Duo and is meant for laptops. Any Intel CPU starting with an "E" (example: E7400) is a desktop Core 2 Duo and is meant for desktops.

Any CPU in these families is MORE than a match for any Pentium 4-era machine of about 1/3 higher clock speed. Like I said, my 2ghz Core 2 Duo is more than a match for a 3ghz P4/HT.

Also note: "Pentium D" CPU's are Pentium 4-era products and cannot be compared to Core Duo and Core 2 Duo products by frequency.

Ok, now that I have shown that my CPU is not below spec, let us move on to the next item you suggested:

"as mobile videocards are not fully supported"

The graphics chip in my machine is simply a 7900GS Go 256. I have PILES and PILES of games that I run on this machine, and I have never heard of any game not being able to support a mobile graphics chipset explicitly. The 7900GS Go (NVIDIA core ID 0x0298) is so similar to it's desktop siblings that you would be hard pressed to write any code that could expose a difference. I completely reject this suggestion as a possible source of the problem. Furthermore, I would call any game defective that does not support NVIDIA chip 0x0298. It is an extremely popular and ordinary GPU. Besides, every other game I own (which is a LOT) runs fine on this machine, INCLUDING many other Source Engine titles.

Next: "Also possibly the powersaving options in bios are causing it"

Nope. Like I said, I have PILES of games that run fine. Shall I name a few that I have been playing recently with very good performance? Fallout 3, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion, Flight Simulator X, Age of Empires III, Medieval II: Total War, Rome: Total War, Half Life 2, Day of Defeat: Source, CounterStrike: Source, etc, etc.

A few of those titles are pretty heavy duty. If there was a "power saving" problem, I would have noticed it, trust me.

"possibly bad ventilation and/or worsened with clogged dust so the overheat protection steps in and slows the system down etc"

Nope, I actually blow the dust out of the vents quite often, plus look at the game list above. Why would this ONE game have a problem?

Next: "Make sure to set the paging file on C:\ to 4096 MB min and max."

I can try that but I won't leave it that way. I will delete this game before I allow it to dictate my page file settings. That kind of tweaking used to make sense back in the day but not anymore. I have 4GB of ram and NONE of my other games require any tweaking.

Next: "If you have a ton of games installed make sure you have enough free disk space (15% at least per partition) left, and that all is fully defragmented."

There is only one drive in my laptop. It is a 320GB disk with 179GB free. It is always defragmented. FYI - Vista runs a defrag on a weekly schedule by default, so unless they change it ALL vista users have a relatively defragged disk.

Also, I have to remind you of something. All of your suggestions and your insisting that the game is NOT at fault is making me think that you are overlooking something that I made very clear in my original post, and like I said, I believe that many people have this problem but are unable to communicate it properly:

Do not lose sight of the fact that the game gets SLOWER and SLOWER and SLOWER, even if I am standing in the same room. PLUS, if I simply SAVE my game and RELOAD it, it is fast again, until it runs SLOWER and SLOWER and SLOWER again. This is not my CPU being under spec, or power saving, or dust in my computer. *** RELOADING A SAVE GAME ALWAYS FIXES THE PROBLEM IMMEDIATELY UNTIL IT SLOWS DOWN AGAIN *** This is indicative of a problem with the game (or steam I guess), and is NOT indicative of a problem with the machine.

PLUS, it always starts in the same place - that level where you go down in the basement.

PLUS, please don't forget that this machine runs LOTS of other new games PERFECTLY. This is literally the ONLY GAME I've had a problem with in a very long time.

I appreciate you trying to help me but you are grabbing at straws here with some of these suggestions. There is DEFINITELY something wrong with the game and/or steam and/or some combination of the two. I submitted this issue to Valve but they sent me here.

Also, you never explained what you meant when you posted that link to that thread and asked me to follow the advice in post #2 - what did you mean by that? It seems unrelated?

"For the rest, it is too odd for us discussing your PC without even a dxdiag report posted."

OK, I will post it.

Look. The game EXPECTS a page file of 4096 MB... even if you have 4 or 8 GB RAM installed. You have 2 options: tell the game how smart programmer you are or just give it the 4 GB page file. Making it more comfortable for the 1,5 GB large chunk of the data mm_levels_public.gcf to stay contiguous.

Just to test, i have run the game without any paging file. But then, that's on a desktop with Vista 64 / 8 GB ram.

Oh and disable/unmount your virtual drive Z:\ as Securom copyprotection (yes also in Steam) does not like it and tries to do something about it.

I am a software engineer. I build software for Windows. I also worked for Electronic Arts for 3.5 years. I am telling you that this is extremely unlikely UNLESS you are talking about a wimpy machine with not quite enough memory. And, even if it IS true, then I would say that there is a problem with the game and the forced page file setting is simply putting a band-aid on the problem.

But this is just an academic discussion at this point because ...

I just tired this and it didn't help. Actually my page file was already like 3.8GB before I tried this test.

... and? What was the result?

Interesting. Somehow I doubt that this is the problem but this is a very good suggestion !!! I will try this.

Yes this is also a very good idea. Thanks man, I will try this too.

See I will argue when I am sure that my points are not being taken properly, but I will give credit where credit is due.

Thanks again for the good suggestions I have overlooked.

Also, I forgot to mention that I have also tried that "picmips" setting that is recommended in the ubisoft support website, and it still just runs slower and slower until I reload a save game.

Also, I forgot to mention that I have tried to run the game with the lowest possible graphics settings, and the highest possible graphics settings, and everything in between, and none of it seems to affect the problem at all. It still just runs slower and slower until I reload a save game.

4096 MB min and max, fixed. Not managed by Windows.

- Right-click "Computer" > Properties. Under 'Tasks' select Advanced system settings > Continue > tab "Advanced" > under Performance, click button "Settings" > tab "Advanced" > Virtual memory > "Change..."
- In both the minimum and maximum spaces enter “4096” (without the quotes)
- To validate this modification, click on the “Set” and then on the “OK” button to close the box
- You must reboot your PC for these changes to take effect.

Ok, I tried all of the stuff you suggested, and none of it seemed to change my situation:

* I changed the page file size to 4096 mix and max

* I turned off the Steam Community GUI overlay

* I completely un-installed DAEMON tools, rebooted, and confirmed that it was completely removed

The game still exhibited the original problem after each change.

Please remember that this is not a simple case of the game simply running slow. The game runs fine for a moment and then runs slower and slower and slower and slower and slower until it is literally CRAWLING. And then, if you save the game and reload it, you will be standing in the SAME room and the fps is very fast again!

I am not the only person have this exact problem with this terrible game. Check this out:

http://www.techsupportforum.co...tting-worse-bug.html

I have seen others too I am trying to dig up more.

Anyone have any more ideas? This game has so many people complaining about FPS drops, I can only believe that it is a buggy piece of crap.

Nobody will improve or patch the game anymore.
Simply live with it.

Whether Nero's advices don't work, you should try with another PC (you're a programmer, you should have several different PC configs just for testing...), or hack the game yourself...

Wow, this game rocks! Not. I have not seen more B.S. then this ever. I have tried the fixes posted in these threads and still my recently purchased copy drops FPS to 10 and I cannot play. Exactly the same problem as listed here and everywhere else on these pages. 2 years and the game still hasn't been fixed? No wonder why ubisoft is running ridicules deals on Steam, THEY SUCK!

Exact same issue here. I don't really want to bother with completely removing Steam and then reinstalling everything. If no one has found a solution by now, I'm just not even going to bother. The issue is obviously a memory leak of some sorts since it starts off all and well then slowly progresses towards unplayable. The process seems to speed up if any undead enemies are around (crazy textures). I worked my way around it by saving/loading the game every couple of minutes, but after chapter 7 or 8 (where you're in the spider area and have to collect the crystals to open the gate) the work around doesn't work anymore. You'll load up and 2 seconds later you'll be watching Sareth swing is mighty sword at .0000005 fps.

I've tried various drivers. Messing with Nvidia Control Panel Settings. Adjusting Page Filing (even though I have 3gigs of RAM... why wouldn't it just use that?).

I don't know what to say... the game is a lot of fun. I only wish I could finish it. For $9, I can't really complain, but I can honestly say I'll be avoiding any more games by this developer.

My Specs are E6600 @ 3.2ghz , 3gigs DDR2 712mhz, SLi 8800GT 512mb, and Vista 32bit.

Just a question: have you tried to delete DM and re-download/install from Steam?

As far as I can read from the posts above you tried everything except reinstalling DM (backup savings first).

A proper DM uninstall involves dealing with Windows registry 'cause the smart programmers didn't provide an affordable uninstall utility.

@forum moderators

please stick a post with "this game will never be patched/updated anymore" statement, 'cause the UBI/Steam deal will bring here a new bunch of "I can't this or that" kind of posts with tons of DXDiag reports Too Happy

Ok, and removing also those keys and then reinstalling DM from scratch from Steam?
I'm puzzled because some say it doesn't even start, others say it runs without problems, someone says it runs flawlessly and doesn't report anymore the "mm.exe has stopped working.." (a big annoyance for me) quitting on Vista.
... I can't undestand what's the exact situation today with this game, Steam version (and Vista under my point of view becuase I happily use this OS since 2007). I'm considering to buy it again from Steam but don't know if it's worth doing...

I had some issues with an old 939 AMD/nVidia/XP PC few years ago.
No issues at all with my other PCs at the time, IntelP4/ATI-or-nVidia/XP even without game patches or service pack applied!

No issues (error on exiting aside) now with i7/ATI/VistaU64 with the patched game.

Some little issues with the no patched demo on the same PCs and my test SP maps, but again playable.

Again, lotsa people here and in other forums out there, got lotsa issues.
Maybe 'cause software or hardware installed. You must try yourself and see... You simply won't have any kind of help from UBI or Arkane anymore.

If you know any "Giochi per il mio computer" reader, you might have the game for free 'cause it was bundled with the magazine one year ago.

I have been having this problem as well. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the title, I've defragged both the system and the game files, I've run several spyware checks, and this game keeps slowing down to the point that it's completely unplayable.
