Arx Fatalis was an interesting first person dungeon crawl game. I think the lesson to be learned from NWC's action oriented games is to not develop another Legends of Might and Magic or Crusaders of Might and Magic. If the game has a good story, environmental experience, well developed characters, quests, etc then it has a good chance of being successful. If there is a model to follow I would advise the developers to use a similar approach to Knights of the Old Republic(though this game has a LOT of voice work, and I don't know if UbiSoft has a talent pool deep enough). Don't be copycats though, and never be afraid to do something different or original.

UBISOFT ANNOUNCES DARK MESSIAH™ OF MIGHT & MAGIC® New Might & Magic® game to be powered by Source™ Engine from Valve SAN FRANCISCO – AUGUST 4, 2005 – Today Ubisoft, one of the world’s largest video game publishers, announces the development of Dark Messiah™ of Might & Magic®, a new first-person action game for the PC, powered by an enhanced version of the Source™ Engine, the award-winning game technology Valve created to power Half-Life®2. Developed by Arkane Studios, the team behind the critically acclaimed Arx Fatalis game, Dark Messiah of Might & Magic puts players in a first-person perspective, allowing them to immerse themselves in the legendary Might and Magic universe as never before. It is also the world’s first fantasy action game to feature a complete first-person combat system. It takes full advantage of the Source™ Engine’s exceptional technological enhancements in areas such as character animation, advanced AI, real-world physics and shader-based rendering. Ubisoft acquired the Might and Magic brand in 2003, and Dark Messiah of Might & Magic is the second title Ubisoft will be launching as it restores this famed franchise to glory. Dark Messiah of Might & Magic is scheduled for a summer 2006 release and will be shown for the first time at the Games Convention in Germany on August 17, 2005.

Well there you have it. Another Cursaders clone.

Even if it's not an RPG i do hope there are some RPG elements in it where i could actually build up my hero/heroine.

Please gave us options on what classes/races we could have. Also do give us options on skills/perks/abilities/powers/attributes that we can choose to increase.

I do however hope it will be an RPG :P

Oops, I thought this was going to be a Might and Magic game. Why put Might and Magic in the title of the game? It's not a Might and Magic game. It'd be like calling Morrowind-Half Life of Morrowind. It has nothing to do with Half Life but we want the attention from the Half Life crowd. Do you want the attention from the players of the Might and Magic series? Why? We'll despise this game for not being Might and Magic 10. There is no possible chance that I'd buy an action game. I like using my brain, not my twitch finger. Silly Ubisoft!

You and me couldn't change anything. FPS sells and that is why they are making a reclone of Doom3 and HL2 with the Might & Magic name on it.

You can't blame them Frown

So, everyone is going to assume that the game is a certain type of game or a remake of Crusaders or Legends of M&M? I'd rather give the developers a chance to publish the game and let people who buy it provide their opinion. Anything else is conjecture and it will certainly provide ample opportunity here for people to get the "assu" part right.

Well I don't know about anyone else, but my interst in this game went down to zero when I found out that it's to be some action game - like we don't have enough of those already.

If this is what Ubi-Soft is going to do with the Might and Magic name then I'd rather see the name stay dead. I can only hope that this game tanks and that it's the last game that Ubi-Soft whores out with the Might and Magic title.

Well, Morrowind was/is also a sort of action game, so for now let's hope the 'first person action game' was a misinterpretation by a lazy PR guy. Wink

Anyhoo, hi @ everyone...I was a big fan of Arx Fatalis so when Arkane announced they're working on a new game I immedeately was interested. Smile Let's wait and see for the first screens/more information now. I'd find it hard to believe Arkane would 'just' make a fighting game.

The FP designation is not alarming as M&M has always been first person. It's the S part that's alarming (or "action game" as the website says). A 3rd person view would be equally alarming, though, imo.

Here's hoping for a modern party based CRPG in the traditional vein that started the series. There actually hasn't been one of those for a long time, has there? Actually, there hasn't been a traditional first person CRPG in ages, I think, as both Morrowind and Gothic are action oriented.

But if this is a sell-out game, I guess I can always install World of Xeen once more. Smile

Btw, did Arkane do Arx Fatalis as well? I hope this game won't have the same shoddy controls as Arx then. Ruined the whole game and made it feel sluggish and cheap.

Sounds like a defeatist attitude to me. I buy games that I enjoy, though I do admit that I've made game choice blunders from time to time. As long as gamers vote with their wallet, game developers will create titles where they can get a return on revenue. I realize that right now traditional RPGs are a risky investment with a chance to not sell well. Action-oriented games are where the money is at, but some companies have been willing to take a risk in the RPG market. It's possible this game will be similar to Arx Fatalis, Ultima Underworld, or possibly be something with a hard to define similarity. I think it would be better for the developers to make the game they want and let the public decide. Thumbs Up

I'm not much of a gamer, so all this talk about FPS and RPG doesn't make much sense. And I'm a middle-aged woman, so that means I'm really unhip. Does that mean "First Person Shooter" and "Role Playing Game?" First Person Shooters are like real time video games, aren't they? UGH!

I've only ever played BARD'S TALE (ah the days of simplicity), Land of Lore and the Might and Magic games. The Heroes of M&M were OK, but not as much fun as the RPG's. What are games like Heroes of M&M called?

If this new game is a real-time shooter, I'll be using my wallet to vote against it. Has the forum master said what the point of view is?

Here's a definition of a few of the game terms:

FPS - First Person Shooter
Examples include: Half-Life, Far Cry, Doom3, Quake, etc
RPG - Role Playing Game
Examples include the Might and Magic games from 1-9, Bard's Tale series, Baldur's Gate, Ultima series, Wizardry series, etc
MMORPG - Massive Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game
Examples include World of Warcraft, Dark Age of Camelot, Everquest, Guild Wars, etc
RTS - Real Time Strategy
Examples includes Starcraft, Command and Conquer, Dune2000, Warcraft 1-3, etc

There's probably a "geek" dictionary out there to look up other Internet abbreviations. Perhaps a Google search will be a good resource.

Someone with inside info posted the following comments on the Through The Looking Glass boards last week. The "This is M&M in name only. It's something new" is enough for me to give this game a miss.

Posted by Digital Nightfall:
The game looks to be very Arx-like. It's an RPG with stats - not as many as Arx, but there. World interaction looks very HL2ish, which makes sense.

As I've said elsewhere,

This will be an RPG, similar to Arx, but much, much bigger.
This is M&M in name only. It's something new.
There is no gesture mouse spell system.
Arx 2 is not dead.
Press releases are silly and say silly things.
I've seen many videos of this game in action, so if there's any confusion, I can offer some help.

Thanks for posting that, interesting stuff. Why would you give it a miss though? Arx was a pretty great game, so if this game proves to be anything like it combined with Source it's bound to be good. Smile

Have any of you actually looked at who is making this game? None of those guys would even think of making a **** action game, They are all about deep gameplay and substance. Hope I don't have to eat those words later...

P.S. You shouldn't rely too much on the press and all since most of it is written by the publisher.

Aye, I truly hope that Ubisoft will stay true to the original games, respecting the legacy of might and magic. With that said I must also agree that they have to be innovative when creating a new might and magic game because the game will be "competing" against games such as WoW, Guildwars, Dragon Age and NWN2... and the future of gaming will be online. But again, the creators only have *that* much freedom when making a new might and magic game. It is a franchise that already has been developed and one must take heed to that. You cannot promote and sell an insipid fps-action game just by branding it with the legendary might and magic name. That would be like paiting two stripes on a Volvo and sell it as a Dodge Viper. Not to mention the loss of respect they will suffer from the computer communities around the world.
The might and magic trade is RPG and RPG is what it always must be - otherwise I am convinced that it will fade into oblivion rather quickly and woe betide us all then. This is a once chance oppertunity to resurrect might and magic!

Besided that I will try to maintain optimism and see what the near future will bring for might and magic Smile

Well from most replies i've read, it seems that i'm not the only one who fret that Dark Messiah of Might & Magic is not an RPG :P
