You're new to Dark Messiah Multiplayer?
You're a bit annoyed by getting beaten down all the time?

You don't know how to deal with
- jumping archers who never seem to miss?
- superfast warriors who bash down
everything in their path?
- assassins who always backstab you
when you expect it the least?
- mages who always blow you in seconds?

Here is some advice for players new to the game.
I'm not a really good (reaction-fast) player myself,
but these tactics worked for me in the beginning,
so maybe it can help someone else as well.

General advice:

The first level is often the most difficult one.
You need one or two kills, which can be hard to get,
especially, if your enemies are at high levels already.
It can be a bit frustrating, that is normal.
Try this:

- Stay with your buddies! If you're alone, you're really easy to beat.

- Stay near your priest. She'll heal you, if she has some mana left.

- Always keep moving (except assassins). But walk, and save your stamina for fights.

- Try to get your first kills from enemies who already got some bad damage.

- Run away from experienced, high-level killer machines. Don't worry
if they laugh and make fun of you. You're a noob, and that is ok.

- Observe what other players of your favorite class do in the beginning.
Either in-game, or in spectator mode.

- Try different classes! I think, warrior and mage
are the easiest to start with.

- Avoid team-kills! They cost a lot of experience points!

Some class-specific tips:
(again, for beginners and the first levels)

Warriors:
- try to hack down unarmored, already injured, low-level enemies
- attack with surprise
- learn to use stance attacks
(press Attack-button until your sword is charged)
- Warrior duells are difficult, because only
stance attacks are effective due to armour

Assassins:
- be patient!!
- avoid the main battle field, you're not equipped for it.
- learn to use your cloack. You're only fully invisible if you don't move.
- learn to use your backstab ability
(instant kill from the back. Often difficult against experienced players.)

Archers
- to me, the most difficult class. Requires precise shots
and anticipation of enemies' movements.
- stay in the second line
- stay away from enemy warriors
- watch out not to teamkill!

Mages
- stay in the second line
- wait for a weak enemy to take him down.
- lvl 2,3: don't forget to optimize on fire or lightning correctly
- avoid melee fights
- watch out not to team-kill!

Priests
- heal your comrades to get the points for the first levels
- stay away from fights, act defensive, supportive

Of course, there are many more advanced tactics for higher levels
or more experienced players. Discover these yourself!
For a new player however, this should work to get the first upgrades.

well that is a good help nor new players i think but there are a few things i would change...

as a general tip: try different skills; the descriptions haven't been changed since the game was released (some even have the text from the beta stages) so they are not very accurate

warrior: i would add something about stances... you wouldn't believe how many guys are trying to kill me with quick attacks and then wonder why they can't hurt me

for archer:
quote:

- stay in the second line. Support your melee friends.

that's a no
as an archer you deal easily up to 60 damage already at the low levels
if you accidently hit your teammate who is in a meele fight there is a high chance of killing him...
only shoot into a meele fight when you are like 100% sure to hit the enemy

mages: what goes for the archer goes double for the mage: every spell has an aoe and many of them do a high amount of damage; so watch out for your team to not be where your spells are (and no it's not nooblike to punish the guy who threw a fireball in your face to fragsteal the guy you were duelling)

Thanks, IDark-KillerI,

for the tips. I added them to the list,
and corrected my archer/mage tips.
They were misleading that way.

About frag-steal... well, personally I sometimes happened to teamkill accidentally
when I actually tried to help someone in my team. (I usually play Crusade/CTF)
Or if holding-a-flag requires to take some risk.
Being insulted and set on fire then by some over-confident guy
is quite annoying as well. I usually only slay those
the next time they teamkill me,
which they do 90% of the time, sooner or later... Smile

yes teamkills can happen by accident no problem there but it happened to me often enough that i was dueling another warrior when a mage from my team came by stopped, chose the spell with the biggest possible explosion he had and throw it right into my face
i usually slay instantly after that and often get flamed for it ^^

Then you have done the right thing.

There is another aspect to it...
I know I should not post this in a thread
dedicated to newbies, but it is so funny: Smile

quote:

About firing into two warriors fighting -
this is the ULTIMATE TEST OF SKILL for an archer
and should be attempted at EVERY OPPORTUNITY Thumbs Up Big Grin
Nothing better than sizing them up, picking
your moment, then let loose the driller and...
and... ....?

That is true mastery...

Yeah I know what you mean, I always use flare/drill in warrior fights. Instead of team killing they say "WTF, We were dueling" Normally I will leave them be, but eh.... my team was losing hehe ^^

As for a few tips from me to you. For newbies, if you *MUST* fire into combat with your team around. Do what Dark said..... be very accurate and sure of a hit. Otherwise, don't even attempt it. You will find lots of loners running around, that or some really weak targets will be available for you I am sure.

Mages should not even attempt to attack around your own team. Instead, they are best optimized to take out targets from far given insta hits lightning and a fireball which you can just point and click. They are best Lone Wulf killers. You see an enemy run around away from a team. They ought to be an easy kill, inless its another mage (who is experienced)

Warriors, though they are beefy and strong, they can be one of the top killers as well, but inless your pretty good. You will often have a lot of deaths as well. Sure 40 kills a game looks good, but doesn't look good when your death ratio exceeeds your kills.....

Be a suprise, the stance attack will eliminate ANY classes strengths. An example, if you stance an archer they *MUST* reload there arrows, making them an easy target. A mage getting ready to launch a fireball. A stance will interrupt it + cause them to lose their mana.

If you want to see how a *REAL* archer playes. Watch these. BTW the very last 2 kills, is exactly what you talked about. 2 warriors fighting xD (well 1 friendly 2 enemy haha)

Hi
I was looking for the right thread, but I hope you could help me (or direct me to another thread)

I've played single player a lot now, and want to play multiplayer, but when swithcing, the game ends and I only get up the window of the Steam dedicated server for DM

How am I supposed to go from there in order to play multiplayer?

Could someone please explain the procedure.

DM Multiplayer is not installed on your steam account.

You have the dedicated server on there, but the DM MP is not. If you obtained the Game via Steam you should be able to download it from your steam games list

If from DVD, must register it for steam and what not. Not 100% sure, has been around 2-3 years :S
