Hi there all Dark Messiah players!!
I have the answer to the "mm.exe" problem and I think it is the same problem in Vista as it is in Win XP. The thing you have to do is this; 1. Go to the Dark Messiah folder (the folder were it is installed). 2. Find the DLL file called "binkw32.dll" (probably in the folder "bin"). 3. Copy "binkw32.dll" to all folders/subfolders in Dark Messiah where you can find .dll files. (don't delete any .dll files of move them, just copy!). 4. Now Dark Messiah of Might and Magic will start and you can enjoy it! 5. Remeber to use the latest patch of the game as well if you have any problems with other things, for ex; graphics or loading time. PS! This is the solution for Win XP, I hope it is for Vista as well. Greetings from Magus |

Thanks for helping, this was the solution for the mm.exe-prob on my pc (vista x64, Catalyst 9.2, hd3870, gigabyte ma-790fx-dq6). I used the bink32.dll (190kb) from the troubleshooting-guide in this forum.
Game starts now without problem and i still receive the mm.exe-crash when exiting game to return to desktop... but, 1. who cares 2. most probbably because of the same bink32-reason. By the way, Multiplayer-Part running completely correct. a lot of Thx again for The_Magus1910. greetings from berlin gencman |

No it is because Vista cannot quit the game normally. This happens always, on Vista (32 / 64). We have to just live with it. ==================================================== PMs with tech questions are ignored xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx BlindNero Forums for online Dark Messiah MM and other games support |

It's not Vista that cannot quit the game normally. This OS does nothing strange. It's the game that has some problems never fixed instead and thus crashes on exit... -- Laptop HP Pavilion dv5-1110el, Vista Home Premium (SP1, OEM, x86, Ita), 4GB RAM, GeForce 9600M GT (Forceware 179.04). |

Vista's architecture is completely different to XP. When the game was created, Vista didn't even exist so you can't blame the developers for not building in a measure according to the Vista architecture can you.
Whether you run it on XP or Vista, it will run in DirectX9.0c. When quitting the game on XP, it just quits immediately. So yes, it's Vista doing this 'strange' thing.

I blame them because they never released a quick patch.
No it's not. Are you a programmer? Have you ever coded something for Vista? The problem is in the mm.exe doing something weird on quit (e.g. mm.exe frees some empty pointers or expects some statically loaded DLL in XP, bad programming examples...). Infact other games (even from 2000 or 1996 I have installed) work fine. They released patches to fix a lot of bugs in the past for DM, they simply left something un-fixed though The game is great, but this crash is quite annoying, even if it doesn't affect gameplay. -- Laptop HP Pavilion dv5-1110el, Vista Home Premium (SP1, OEM, x86, Ita), 4GB RAM, GeForce 9600M GT (Forceware 179.04). |

Whatever the little weird thing is, XP didn't notice; it only happens in Vista... OS officially not supported, but thanks to Microsoft since SP1 and WindowsUpdate after that, the game (like most older games) now runs great on Vista (32 / 64) nevertheless.
After patch 1.02 for XP released by Arcane, Ubisoft didn't care about the game anymore. So there it is, be happy it runs on Vista at all.

I'm constantly looking for unofficial fixes or manual hex-editing tricks to fix the bug for Vista...
If I'll ever find something be sure I'll post it here -- Laptop HP Pavilion dv5-1110el, Vista Home Premium (SP1, OEM, x86, Ita), 4GB RAM, GeForce 9600M GT (Forceware 179.04). |
