After reading IGN's review of No More Heroes, it's pretty apparent that the game is clear-cut between its good and bad factors. It got the dreaded 8.0 rating. Yes, I did say dreaded - 8.0 is as middle-of the road as you can get when scoring a video game - it seperates your sub-par 7.5's from your respectable 8.5's.

Games as lousy as Guilty Gear XX Accent Core and as decent as Trauma Center: New Blood have received the same rating, and unfortunately the 8.5's for the system - Sonic and the Secret Rings, Mario Strikers: Charged...aren't that good.

On a system in dire need of hardcore games, most of them seem to be falling short of their publishers' good names.

The author of the IGN article praised the game's fighting system and fast-paced everything, stating that it's quite fun and the visuals help bring things to life. He heavily criticized the game's open-ended town, noting its poor interactivity, lack of places to explore and things to do and poor overall design and object model flaws. Sounds a bit like my hometown.

He actually went so far as to say that the game's open-ended features are THE worst of ANY Wii game released to date. Regardless, he did mention that the game has some of the most challenging and rewarding boss fights he's ever played through - apparently they're just hard to reach considering that the mission system in the game is crappy and gives you one shot at a mission each time one shows up on the map.

So today as people start posting their first gameplay impressions of No More Heroes, we can gather some different perspectives on the game.

Personally, I prefer reviewers that give reasonable criticisms just so I know what to expect before spending $40 or $50.

Regardless, I think I still would have bought it regardless of any reviews because I love Grasshopper games.

Just one more week to wait until I have it in my hands (I live in Montreal).

Actually IGN's Bozon gave the game a 7.8. It seemed to me he focused too heavily on the ****ty overworld, but I mean come on, this isn't supposed to be GTA.
GameSpot 01/23/08 9 /10 9.0
IGN.com 01/22/08 7.8 /10 7.8
GamePro 01/22/08 4.5 /5 9.0
GameTrailers 01/22/08 8.2 /10 8.2
Edge [UK] 01/14/08 9 /10 9.0
Computer and Video Games.com 01/08/08 9.4 /10 9.4
Famitsu Weekly 12/21/07 9 /10 9.0
Famitsu Weekly 12/21/07 8 /10 8.0
Famitsu Weekly 12/21/07 8 /10 8.0
Famitsu Weekly 12/21/07 9 /10 9.0

These are the other reviews from different respectable sources. IGN (Bozon was the reviewer) gave the game the lowest score.

Sorry for double post Smash, but the 2 sets of ratings from each site were their ratings, followed by their adjusted IGN rating. The game is currently averaging a 8.6.

I respect Bozon's review as he does raise valid points.

Also, what IGN have you been reading? They use a 100 point scale, not a scale where the only decimals that are given are ones like 7.5 and 8.5, so your statements are blurring a lot of the overall review scores.

IGN has used a scale of 0-10 as far as I can remember...and they do go with the decimal system...

I don't know what reviews OVeirew has been reading though...Sonic got a rating in the 6 range from the US team, and Mario Strikers was rated in the low 8's.

Still calling BS on Bozon though, he rated Mario and sonic higher than NMH...and we all know that game is poor.

I think IGN expected too much of the GTA like overworld, but it is really only a means to connect the true action. The slow parts in between each ranking mission can either be quick and simple or long and tedious. It is painless if you simply get enough money and continue with missions but if you want all the goodies like an upgraded saber or some kickass special moves then it will take a bit longer. I do not mind the overworld but I can see why some people would become frustrated with it, especially if you are intent on reviewing the game and want to rush through but are being forced to upgrade your saber through side jobs.

For some better news X-Play rated No More Heroes a 5 out of 5!

And I got my 8.0 reviews from Nintendo Power, so it is possible that they're a litle biased, but aren't all of 'em?

Also, my favorite site for everything video game related rated this game with a 9/10. Their main complaints were low framrates while on the bike, and jagged graphics. The site is called gamesradar. Unfortunatly, they don't have video reviews.
