I wonder if it's officially ok to distribute CM3000 as freeware?
Thanks |

It's not a freeware, it's "abandonware" (whatever the definition is).
Strictly speaking it's ilegal, but since absolutely nobody will suffer any loss (no company is selling it for a long long time), I think it's OK. That is if by 'distributing' you don't mean selling. You can only sell your own legal copy which you have purchased. This whole issue with older games will soon become moot, because they don't work on new operating systems. What XP has left, was wiped out by Vista. I don't think any "classic" game works on Vista. |

Thanks Ebutaljib.
What I meant is, for example, if it was uploaded to a file sharing site, and a link posted to the file, would the copyright owners have a problem with that? And what about for CM4000 & CM5000? |

Nearly all "abandonware" versions of Chessmaster are available somewhere on the internet -- there's no need for you to do anything.
Also, it's not a good idea to come to an Ubisoft forum and ask about activity that is equivalent to stealing their property (it makes no difference if they've stopped selling it). If you have questions on what's acceptable in the forums, please read the Code of Conduct / Forum Rules. As there's nothing left to discuss, I'm closing this topic. |
