I just bought the game for my daughter and can't update it. When I go to install the patch it tells me "This program cannot update the installed version of Chessmaster 10th Edition because of the following reason: C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Chessmaster 10th Edition\game.exe: unknown version."
I read the FAQ's and tried recopying the game .exe from the CD and still get the same problem.
I have not installed any No CD Cracks either. This is a fresh install from the brand new CD.
ebutaljib: I just tried it without the CD in and the game plays.I don't think it's supposed to right?
I checked in game to see if the new ones are already version 1.3, but it says version 1.0.
Is this some kind of a bootleg copy or something? It looks like a real Ubi release and my daughter got it through School with the Schoolastic Book oreder form.
I just tried to go online and I get the "ERR50" error so I gues the game is unpatched.
It says version 1.0 in the help section of the game too.
I don't know what else could be causing it. I installed on my comp too, just incase it was something with my daughters comp, and it does the same thing on mine.
In that case you have either an ilegal version or UBI shipped out some third english version. Perhaps you could solve the problem if someone would send you his own game.exe and you would then install the patch. but it wprobably wouldn't work anyway, because then it would complain about anim.dll or something else.

I was thinking, if you got it through your daughter's school, it could be an "educational" version (i.e., it doesn't have all the features of the regular version), in which case you wouldn't be able to play online anyway...
It's definately not an educational version. It is the full game.
If it is a bootleg then they did an unreal job as the silk screening on the CD is totally proffesional. I don't think it is a bootleg though.Especialy since I bought it through Schoolastic and not some thrift store.
Hopefully someone else has had this problem and resolved it.
Daycart posted this on 5/10/2007 but never got a reply on the fix.He got his from Schoolastic too.
"Hi. I am an elementary school teacher. I purchased CM 10th edition from Scholastic. When I try to patch I get an error message saying it is an unknown version. When I look at about chessmaster 10th edition it says it is 1.0.0. I have tried running the 1.03, 1.02, and 1.01 patches. They all have the same error message. Any non-sarcastic help would be greatly appreciated. Sarcastic help only appreciated."
Well, it may be Chessmaster 10th Edition, but I'm still inclined to believe that it's an education version of some kind. Does it say anything in the User's Manual about online play?
Yes the manual says " A full featured online chess module, allowing players to communicate, compete, and learn from each other. "
I ddn't notice it at first, but when I took the 3rd CD out there is a Scholastic.com add built into the inside back cover. It just promotes their game and download website though. It doesn't say anything about this being a educational or special edition. Everything else on the CD case looks like an official Ubisoft edition.
I went to the site and there is nothing about any updates for chessmaster there.
I'm a user from Brazil and I'm having exactly the same problem as MA61. Either the us and uk patches are non-functional. When trying to update using the us patch I get a "anim8.dll: unknown version" and with the uk patch I get a "game.exe: unknown version". I've tried reinstalling the software and also using it in a different computer but the problem continues. In Ubisoft Support there seems to be no answer to this kind of problem. Have you figured out a solution to it. Thanks.
Just to be sure, check the version number in Help About, to ensure that it actually needs to be patched.
If you still have a problem, contact Ubisoft Technical Support. Rather than look for answers, you'll have to 'Ask a Question'; or you might want to make a telephone call and explain everything to a Support Representative.
Yes, why are you posting in this topic? It's about how some people can't patch the game, but yours is already patched! Otherwise you couldn't even connect online.
