I am interested in creating my own chess sets for CMX. I have downloaded the DatTexExtract program and read it's readme, but when I try to open the .tga files in GIMP or Paint.NET all I see is a faint shadow of the piece. How can I edit the tga files?
Thanks for the info, I was initially looking at a glass set which didn't have many discernible textures. Now I've looked at a few others and it seems there's often just one texture for the all the white pieces and one for the black ones, like for staunton marble for example, and sometimes a different texture for each piece, like lewis. From there I should be able to edit the textures in order to change the colors of the existing sets.
However, I still don't understand how to define where to apply the textures to the pieces and how to change the shapes of the pieces. Is this possible? Is that information kept in the .dat file? Can it also be extracted and modified, or created from scratch, or not?
When I said textures, I should have said specularity... I apologize for the confusion.
You can create a 2D set from scratch. However, for 3D sets, you can only change the color and/or size. You can't change the shape or create one from scratch.
