Okay, I played the demo of Chessmaster 10 on my computer, loved it, and so I went to buy the full version. The only version available in-store over here is the Polish language version, so that's what I bought. The first problem I hit was the very helpful and informative error on startup: "A critical error occurred". I downloaded both the US and UK version of the patch, but neither worked.

Thankfully, I was able to track it down and found that that the character set got messed up because I'm using an English language Windows XP machine. I fixed it manually by renaming all folders and files that had special Polish characters. Now it runs.

However, the game still has obvious flaws like taking 100% of the CPU while playing, which I gather was fixed in the patches. But none of the patches work with the Polish version. The Polish distributor (Cenega) has a support page, but CM10 is not even listed. A Google search didn't find anything interesting.

So I turn to this forum for help. It's a long shot, but perhaps someone has experienced something similar and knows how to get around this. It's a great game, but I find that the technical support side needs some serious polishing (no pun intended).

Thats not a flaw. It's always like that.

Well, I understand that when the engine calculates it uses all the CPU power it can get, but it's completely unacceptable that it takes a few seconds to respond to user input. To me that's an obvious flaw. Perhaps it's not fixed. I can work around it by changing the process priority, but it's still annoying.

Thanks. Yes, there's a Polish version although I wish I had the English one. There's always more problems with international versions.

Thanks a lot for solving my problem. I am using a Russian language ver of WinXP and the Polish ver of Chessmaster would not run. THe guy a the "tech support" ehmmm .... said that the only advice he can give me is to change all local settings to Polish ones. Tomorrow I'll call him and tell him about your solution. Hopefully he will pass this information to another troubled user. Funily enough his "solution was provided to him by another user LOL
