It's doubtful that Chessmaster 9000 is compatible with 64-bit Vista.

Chessmaster 10th Edition and Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition are both compatible, although only Grandmaster Edition has a 64-bit engine.

Thanks! I guess I will load it and see what happens. I just loaded an old FRITZ 7 chess program (2003) and it's been working OK. Next up, Chessmaster 9000.

Chessmaster does not work at all once loaded. Cannot even load the patch. The program locks up the system and won't hardly shut down afterwards. Oh well. Is there any kind of deal on the new Chessmaster, Grandmaster Edition?

It looks like Chessmaster has some other issues with your computer (graphic card maybe), not Vista 64-bit.

Eh, you know what? Once I start a new game the game crashes! Smash

Since I also have 10th edition and Grandmaster Edition installed, I haven't really played CM 9000 in a long time. But I know for sure that it used to work too. Probably one of the Microsoft updates (Service Pack 1 perhaps?) killed it.

So I apologize for misleading you. It looks like CM 9000 doesn't work under Vista anymore.

But 10th Edition and Grandmaster Edition work. 100% sure Thumbs Up

Which of those two versions allows me to play without having to have a disk in a drive bay? I really dislike games that force me to load the disk everytime. I really liked the download of CM9000 for that. Is either 10th Ed or Grandmaster Ed a download?

Here's my new comp:

This is the fastest PC I've ever had. It breezes thru other games that my old comp had problems with.

Provided you install all the patches (available at Chessmaster 10th Edition Downloads, Chessmaster 10th Edition will work without a CD.

Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition also works without having to have the DVD.

Nice computer! I don't understand the thing with the neon lights, though. I guess I'm just old-fashioned... Smile

I downloaded and tried to install CM GM Edition and it will not install right??? Support is not up now either? I get a message to try again later when I try to ask a question there. I've even tried uninstalling and reinstalling, but I get this same message everytime when I try to run the program. (This application failed to start because Kernal.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.) Is there a direct email addy for support? I sure don't want to have to download this program again. It took around 2.5 hrs.

It sounds like you need to run the installation program as an Administrator (right-click on the file and select "Run As").

Technical Support by phone is only available from 09:00 to 21:00 EST (US) and 07:00 to 21:00 (UK)...

I've tried everything I can think of, uninstalling & reinstalling including running the install as the Admin. I was in the Admin account anyway to begin with and used that option too. I keep getting the same error message when I try to run the game. Finally found the correct support web site and started a support ticket yesterday morning. Still no reply. Oh well.

Okay, I know this is a lame question, but do you have the latest service packs for your OS installed?

Yup, my OS is up to date. The whole problem was pure idiocy on my part. I was using the game.exe in the unpacked folders trying to start the game. I did not realize that an icon was installed in the games folder. Clicking on the correct icon starts the game perfectly. I sent an apology to support for wasting their time and closed the ticket on-line. Been playing the game now with no problems so far. Also pasted a shortcut for CM GM on my desktop. I'm a happy camper now.
