Yes, I've had Chessmaster 10th Edition running on Windows Vista with no problems.

Do you have the latest service packs for Vista installed? If not, that would be a good place to start.

Just installed Vista service pack 2 for the Home premium version. Still no luck, same error as before when trying to install.

Did you install as admnistrator?
You do have the full version and not just the demo, right?

I've got the original disks, and the game works fine on my old XP computer. The laptop is only two weeks old, just purchased from Dell. I wouldn't know if I'm in administrator mode or not but I wouldn't have that Chessmaster would need a different login for installation than anything else I've installed so far. The Windows installation process has been fine for everything else so far. The installation of service pack two for Vista was a good idea, shame it didn't work. quote: I try to install Chessmaster 10th Edition on my new Dell laptop with Vista and get the following error message:

To run Setup as Administrator, right-click on the file (Setup.exe) and select 'Run As Administrator'.

This is really strange. On a hunch while trying to install (I checked that I was administrator) once I got to after the install where it had set up the installation folders and it asks you where you want to store some accessory or short-cut (something like that) I just changed the folder name and added a few extra letters to the end. I just thought after the previous failures maybe it hadn't properly cleaned up and removed folders and registry settings. I also didn't include the installation of Adbobe 6 and DirectX9. It worked fine and I'm now playing Chessmaster 10th edition. Many thanks for your help and advice. I'm sure something in all that worked.

I don't know why you tried to install the patches if you don't have the game installed. The most likely culprit is a bad install CD... it may be dirty, scratched, or some other such thing. I would suggest taking it back to the store you purchased it from and exchange it for another copy.

I bumbled my way through to getting it to work. I vaguely remember that I went back a RESTORE point before the installation, made sure I was in administrator login and updated to all Vista updates. Probably none of those in isolation made any difference but together they all made it work.
