I recently ran an Analysis of a game I had just played and was wondering what some of the numbers meant.

When the analysis says Score : 0.52 what does that mean? How do I know if it is good or bad?

Also, when it says, depth 3/11 what does it mean?

This would be one area where I think the documentation could use some help... Smile

Score is the rating for the current move... it's given in pawns; .52 would be a bit over half a pawn. The more pawns, the better.

3/11 would mean that Chessmaster has analyzed 11 half move combinations (called plies), and 3 are found to be favorable.

Thanks. I couldn't find anything like this in the skimpy documentation I have.

In essence, the higher the score number the better the move and the higher the depth percentage, the better the odds. So a depth of 3/11 would be a lot less favorable than 8/11.

I am looking at the analysis of a recent game I played and my score rose gradually, then jumped much higher, then vacillated up and down. That would reflect point in the game where some of my moves were pretty good but others less so.

Eventally, the scores disappeared and were replaced by mate in 12 or 8 moves or similar notices.

This seems to make more sense that I thought.

Thanks again.

This seems to be different from my understanding of the earlier response I received. If the depth is 7/15 does it mean that the analysis is valid for 7 of the 15 possible variations Chessmaster explored?

Depth then is a measure of how valid the analysis is.

This leads to a third question: How much time per move should I allow for the analysis?

Thanks for all your help.

No, it appears that I misspoke. My apologies.

Obviously, the more time you allow for analysis, the better the results. You can set it to a maximum of 999 seconds (16 minutes, 39 seconds) per move; however, be prepared for a long, long wait. Frankly, I find the default (10 seconds) to be adequate.

I follow the rule of thumb to give computer (at least) as much time for analysis as the players had in a game.

For example: The game was played with 5min+3sec increment and lasted 50 moves.

5*60+3*50=450 seconds Divide with 50 and you get 9 seconds per move. You can round up to 10 in this case. Of course it is always better to give more time than less.

3/11 is not a fraction Wink
