my roommate and i have a debate. he says in a glass chess set with frosted and clear pieces, the frosted pieces are "black" and the clear pieces are "white". i think its the opposite, frosted = white, clear = black. who is right and where can i find an answer i can show him as being valid and official?

Your roommate is correct... White would be the clear pieces, and Black would be the frosted pieces.

Frankly, if this is the cause of a debate, I would suggest getting a wooden chess set. Smile

any websites that state that as the offical rule? i think you're right though, we just need to upgrade to a set that is not questionable!

Well, no; there are no websites (at least none that I know of) that state "official" rules for glass chess sets.

Still, in your case, the lighter colors (transparent) pieces would be considered White, and the darker (frosted) pieces are considered Black.

By the way, Section 2 of FIDE's handbook states the Standards of Chess Equipment to be used in tournaments... glass sets are not allowed. Smile
