Dear all:
I installed CM 9000 on my Vista inside my System Administrator account. CM 9000 works 100% in m SystemAdmin account, but not in the kids account. When I try to start it there, the following error occurs: *** A fatal error occured when loading the Mentor Opening Book. The application will shut down. How can I fix this? I already set the folder permissions in the SystemAdmin account on SHARE with the kids account. I assigned them co-owner status. My OS = Vista. Hope you can help, as I love to help me 7-year old to grow in this wonderful game. Awaiting your response, with warm regards, Hans |

CM 9000 is for Windows 98, ME, or XP only, so it's not surprising that you're having problems...
Have you tried running the Program Compatiblity Wizard? Just go to 'Help and Support' from the Start Menu, and type in 'Program Compatibility Wizard'. You get get a list, of which the first item is 'Start the Progam Compatibility Wizard'. From there, you can select CM 9000 and change the options to make it behave properly. I can't guarantee this will fix your problem, but at least it's something to try. Also, I should add that if playing online is of interest to you, you'll need to upgrade (preferrably to Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition, as it is supported in Vista) as Online Play for CM 9000 is no longer supported. Try copying the "Chessmaster 9000" folder from My Documents (of user "admin") to My Document (of user "kid").
Perhaps this will do the trick. |

Dear Helpers:
I have tried to apply both suggestions, but in vain. The Program Compatibility Wizard did not make any difference. The copying of files into the specific user account did not help either, as none of the files were located in a user-specific directory. What I did after seeking to solve it through the above means, was to uninstall the program and then install it inside the kids account. But... the problem remained exactly the same. The program works under SystemAdmin account, but not on any other. Any other suggestions? Thanks so much for thinking along. Warm regards, Hans |

BINGO !!! I was prompted to restudy that copying into users directories again. I searched for all chessmaster directories and found them. Then copied them into the kids documents folder and BINGO.
The problem was that I am completely not used to Vista's covering up of what's going on. On XP and earlier you could always see all folders and most of what's going on. In Vista it is hidden behind fancy interfaces. When you Explore the C-drive you never find these user directories. But searching for the folder "Chessmaster", I did find them! All works 100% Thanks so much for the coaching. Now my kids can dive into this game further. Warm regards! Hans |

I have been having the same problem as the one given by praotes, namely that Chessmaster 9000 works fine from my sysadmin account but not from my son's account. My son gets the error message "A fatal error occurred loading the Mentor Opening Book. The program will now terminate." I tried several things including giving him read/write permission on the chessmaster 9000 folder. I also copied the entire chessmaster 9000 folder to my son's Documents folder, which yielded success for praotes, but unfortunately not for us. However, praotes said that he copied more than one chessmaster directory to the kids Documents folder. Specifically what directories did he copy?

Well, I'm not certain, but there are two folders that hold files for Chessmaster 9000:
I believe proates is mentioning the second folder; Make a copy of that folder and place a copy of it in your children's document folder. |

Yes, the second folder is hidden if you are loged in as another user. The path given by KHollister is for Vista, but it is different in XP.
1. Login with your account (the one where chessmaster works) 2. Go to "My documents" and copy the entire "Chessmaster9000" folder. Copy it somewhere where you will find it later. 3. Log off and login with your son's account. Move the folder you copied before to your son's "My documents" folder. 4. Start Chessmaster. |

This is to let you know that the "BINGO" method works. I must have made a mistake when I tried it in December. I first made a copy of my "Documents\Chessmaster 9000" folder using Window's right click feature, and placed it on my desktop. I then located my son's Documents folder by going through Start->Computer->C:\Users\<his login>\Documents . I deleted his copy of "Chessmaster 9000" in his Documents, and dragged the new copy into this folder. When he logged in, he needed to trash his Chessmaster shorcut on his desktop and relink to the Chessmaster executable in C:\Program Files\Chessmaster 9000. BINGO, it worked for him!
Thanks for your help, guys! Jim PS I had to reregister with a slightly different name because I forgot my password and couldn't reset it. So 'timbreana' is now a dead account.
