Hi can someone help here please? I've checked through the forum but not found specific answer to this problem. I used to get sound ok but going into Academy now I get nothing.
INI file seetings are below. [settings] NoAudio=1 notation_style=0 IntroMovie=1 piece_sounds=1 NLAVoice=1 TutorialVoice=1 IVAVoice=0 IllegalMoveVoice=0 WindowClose=0 Buddy=0 ChatTell=0 Challenge=0 match_boards_pieces=0 blunder_alert=0 blunder_alert_thresh=0 EnginePriority=0 SpeechRecognition=0 Only2DBoards=0 I am running Windows Vista SP1 and have iTunes and Media Monkey in addition to the OS embedded Windows media player though I still get the problem when these apps aren't running... |

It looks like you have sounds turned off...
Go to Training mode, and select 'Sound' from the Preferences menu, and make sure that you make sure that 'No Sounds' isn't set ('Sounds' isn't available from the Preferences menu when you're in the Academy). |

Thanks. I followed your suggestion and confirmed Sounds is checked on in preferences.
I tried the following: 1. In the ini file I had pasted in my previous message the value was NoAudio=1. I assumed this means "true" so I reset to NoAudio=0 and restarted CM. Still no sound. 2. So I went to Control Panel and looked at the Sound Scheme. It shows as Windows Default(Modified) and when I scroll down the different applications and system sounds I can find an entry for ChessMaster and against some of the actions like Announce, Bmove, there are audio icons. The window provides me with on option to test the sound file. When I do no sound plays. When I test a standard OS sound I do get sound. 3. Next to the test button there is a browse option. I took that, browsed to the WAV folder in CM and selected annouce against the announce option. Under that new modified sounds scheme I still didn't get any sound. Very happy with CM is so many ways, but I really miss the audio, espcially the tuition exercises and commentaries. I would really appreciate further help to get to root cause of problem. |

Which ini file did you modify?
|
|||
|
I modified the CM file in directory C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Chessmaster 10th Edition
This is the only configuration file I could identify. So is there more than one place where audio parameters are declared? |

Chessmaster 10th Edition is a bit different on Windows Vista... it can be somewhat confusing.
First, when you installed Chessmaster, did you remember to install as Administrator? Second, do you have all the patches installed? Check the 'About Chessmaster 10th Edition' screen (from the Help menu). If it doesn't say V 1.0.3, then you need to install the patches, which are available from the Chessmaster 10th Edition Downloads (You need to install these as Administrator as well). In Vista, editing the CM.ini file in the folder you did doesn't do anything - changes get made to a "Virtual Store" folder. Look for the CM.ini in the following folder: C:\Users\<Your Name>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Ubisoft\Chessmaster 10th Edition |

Hi, yes I installed as Administrator and have all patches up to 1.0.3. Thanks for the Vista ini info. Here are the settings as I found them in that file. So what values do I need to change to get sound working again?
[settings] NoAudio=0 notation_style=0 IntroMovie=1 piece_sounds=0 NLAVoice=0 TutorialVoice=0 IVAVoice=0 IllegalMoveVoice=0 WindowClose=0 Buddy=0 ChatTell=0 Challenge=0 match_boards_pieces=0 blunder_alert=0 blunder_alert_thresh=0 EnginePriority=0 SpeechRecognition=0 Only2DBoards=0 OpenGL=0 Config=1 LastUser=Rob EGDBPath=C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Chessmaster 10th Edition\Data\EGDB |

Everything seems fine except blunder alert threshold, but that has nothing to do with the sound.
What about if you run cmsettings.exe. Is the "disable sound" unchecked? |
|||
|
Hi - Disable sounds box is unchecked, Direct3D is checked. If TutorialVoice=0 then this means NO sound right? |
||||
|

Yes, that's correct.

My ini file also has TutorialVoice=0 but the sounds are OK. Every other sound works OK on your computer (other games and applications)? What does dxdiag.exe (DirectX diagnostic) say? It reports everything as ok and working? |

|
Hi, I've updated the ini just now (see below) but still get no sound. If I set NoAudio=1 I get what I'd expect (no sound) and CM actually advises me on restarting of same. I've set the values in the ini to what I believe should be the correct ones to get sound.
Does this look right to those of you in the know? [settings] NoAudio=0 notation_style=0 IntroMovie=1 piece_sounds=1 NLAVoice=1 TutorialVoice=1 IVAVoice=0 IllegalMoveVoice=0 WindowClose=0 Buddy=0 ChatTell=0 Challenge=0 match_boards_pieces=0 blunder_alert=0 blunder_alert_thresh=0 EnginePriority=0 SpeechRecognition=0 Only2DBoards=0 OpenGL=0 Config=1 LastUser=Rob EGDBPath=C:\Program Files\Ubisoft\Chessmaster 10th Edition\Data\EGDB |

I forgot to answer these points earlier. Yes, no problems with other apps, media files, etc. Have run dxdiag and no problems found. I'm not sure what to investigate next.. |

I'm not sure either. Everything seems ok, except that it's not. Try downloading the latest drivers for your audio card. Perhaps uninstalling and then installing the game again will solve something. Also try to figure out what has chanfged on your computer between "sound works" and "sound doesn't work".

Hi. Have resolved the issue indavertently! Downloaded Windows 7 Release Candidate and Tutorial sound /voice is fine. Thanks for assistance but problems in Vista had left me stumped. Early days but W7 seems very nice indeed.
