How can I get Chessmaster 5500 to properly install on my computer? I have Windows XP.

When I attempted to install it before, it would reach 74% then get an error and exit. Now with your advice, it gets to 100%.. stalls... then this error occurs;

'E:\Setup\wintdist.exe

Only part of a ReadProcessMemory or WriteProcessMemory request was completed.' then it closes.'

So I set compatibility for that and same results.

Success! Well... near success. I got the game working by burning it onto another disc and running it from that. It now loads the autorun, and installs completely. Although, at around 8% during the installation it will say

'The ODBC resource DLL (C:\WINDOWS\system32\odbcint.dll) is a different version than the ODBC setup dll (C:\WINDOWS\system32\ODBCCP32.DLL) You need to reinstall the ODBC components to ensure proper operation.

Press OK to proceed, CANCEL to abort.'

(perhaps someone with a working Chessmaster can send me this file?)
So I click ok and it installs just fine. but when I try to run the game, it opens, plays the intro goes to the main menu then an error pops up.

'SmartBoard Error
Cannot open SMARTBRD.VXD!'

Then it goes to the game where I then can play for a few moments before it freezes.

Hmmm... it appears both files ARE different versions, how do I reinstall them? As for Windows SP 2, I already have that.

It appears that MDAC 2.8 comes with Windows SP2.
Hmmm... I think the only option would be if someone sent me their up-to-date ODCB files. Wink

Thanks,
The ODBC driver problem is now fixed.
But now, when I install, it will reach 100% and another error will pop up saying;
'Error loading W95INF32.DLL'
then it will say the game installed succesfully installed and exit. But when I try to run the game I still get the SmartBoard error.
I tried installing this on my old computer, which is Windows ME, and it installed perferctly fine and played normally. What should I do?

Lol, well, if thats the case, what other Chess programs should I try? I tried Chessmaster 10
but it was way to friggin' buggy and the graphics were ugly. I need something to play against and to maybe learn a few new tactics.

Bleh, the graphics are so... bland... Tongue
Is Fritz 9 any good for beginner players?

Also, you should maybe add that list of Chessmaster games and their compatability to the F.A.Q for reference.

I am still having the same problem as everyone else is having and was wondering could it by chance be something in the software program that is not allowing you to play it and to freeze up. Please let me know.

Chessmaster 5500 is 13 years old. In computer terms, that's ancient; so getting to run on XP or Vista is extremely doubtful.

Why not join the 21st century and upgrade to Chessmaster 10th Edition or Chessmaster Grandmaster Edition? Wink
