Hi
I just got the 10th Anniversary edition and am playing Myst. I hear everything fine until someone speaks. The people in the books and the hologram message are both silent, but elsewhere in the game I get all the neat ambiance sounds. Can anyone help me fix this?
I'm not leaving my computer statistics only because I don't know them!
Thanks so much

If you are running a PC (not a Mac) run the DXDIAG and post the entire thing here on this web.

I know nothing about the Macs.

It is a PC. How do I run the DXDIAG? Sorry, I'm a bit computer illiterate.
Thanks for your help!

To post a DxDiag report in this topic:

1. Press keys (win) + R, or click on Start > Run.
2. Type dxdiag in the box.
3. Click OK.
4. Let the blue bar in the lower left corner of the main DxDiag window finish crawling and disappear.
5. Run all of the tests you can on the Display, Sound and Music tabs. Do not neglect to do this step! At least:
-- a. On the Display tab, click on the Test DirectDraw and Test Direct3D boxes, and follow the resulting instructions.
-- b. On all of the Sound tabs, click on the Test DirectSound box, and follow the resulting instructions.
-- c. On the Music tab, click on Test DirectMusic box, and follow the resulting instructions.
6. Click on the Save All Information button.
7. Close the DxDiag utility.
8. Now you have a DxDiag.txt file on your Desktop, or in the location where you saved it. Copy *ALL* of the contents of this file to the Windows Clipboard:
-- a. Double-click on the file to open it.
-- b. Right-click anywhere in the text, then click on Select All in the resulting menu.
-- c. Right-click on the highlighted text, then click on Copy in the resulting menu.
9. Paste the contents of the file from the Clipboard into a new post in this topic:
-- a. Click on the yellow (furthest right) Quick Reply arrow in the bottom right corner of the page.
-- b. With the mouse cursor at the upper left corner of the Quick Reply to: 10th Anniversary sound woes... box, type in any additional details of your problem.
-- c. Position the mouse cursor at the left margin of the box and one line down from your additional details, then right-click.
-- d. Click on Paste in the resulting menu.
-- e. Click on Post Now.

If the manufacturer and exact model number of your PC aren't shown under 'System Information', System Manufacturer and System Model at the top of the report, also include that information in your post.

Suggestions, to do in the order shown:

Be certain that you're logged into Windows with full Administrator privileges when doing any of these suggestions. If you're the only user of your PC and have not set up any User Accounts, you have full Admin privileges by default.

1. Reset your virtual memory paging file size. Before changing your paging file settings, note what you started with, so that you can go back to those settings if desired.
-- a. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
-- b. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
-- c. In the Performance pane, click Settings.
-- d. In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
-- e. In the Virtual memory pane, click Change.
-- f. Under Drive , click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change.
-- g. Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size.
-- h. Change Initial size and Maximum size to 512, the proper value in megabytes.
-- i. Click Set, and then click OK.
-- j. Click OK to close the Performance Options dialog box, and then click OK to close the System Properties dialog box. Close everything back to the Desktop.
-- k. Reboot, and play Myst.

Even if this doesn't help your Myst sound problem, leave the virtual memory paging file set as above.

2. You have only 256 MB of system RAM. If you have lots of processes and applications running in the background, they could be causing conflicts and various problems with Myst. Use Windows Task Manager to close everything except for Explorer.exe, Ctfmon.exe, and whatever your hardware needs:
-- a. Close your Internet connection.
-- b. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del once, and then click on Task Manager.
-- c. Click on the Applications tab.
-- d. Click on the desired application to highlight it.
-- e. Click on End Task.
-- f. Repeat this procedure until all unnecessary background applications are closed, including your anti-virus program and software firewall.
-- g. Click on the Processes tab.
-- h. Click on the desired process to highlight it.
-- i. Click on End Process.
-- j. Repeat this procedure until all unnecessary background processes are closed. If you aren't sure which processes can be safely closed, check out the AnswersThatWork Task List Programs index. The most common tasks are described, and which ones are essential and which can be safely closed are noted.
-- k. WITHOUT rebooting, play Myst. If the sound problem isn't solved, reboot into normal Windows.

DO NOT leave your Internet connection active after doing this, especially if you have only a software firewall. An active connection with no firewall is an open invitation to hackers, who are not your friends!

3. If the above don't help, the sound problem is most likely due to your Sound Blaster Live! USB driver. Download and update your sound driver to the latest available from Creative. This is "Creative USB Sound Blaster series update 1.00.0030" (USBD_COMBDRV_LB_1_00_0030.exe, 11.63 MB, released 6/27/05), available here. Download USBD_COMBDRV_LB_1_00_0030.exe to a folder and not to the Desktop.
-- While installing this update, do not disconnect your USB Sound Blaster.
-- After installing this update, do not reinstall any drivers from the Installation CD.
-- Always log into Windows with full Administrator privileges when installing any driver.

To install the updated driver, first:

Clear your Internet Explorer caches.
-- a. Close all open applications.
-- b. Open a single Internet Explorer session.
-- c. Click on Tools > Internet Options.
-- d. Click on Delete Cookies > OK.
-- e. Click on Delete Files (check the 'Delete all offline content' box) > OK.
-- f. Click on Clear History > Yes.
-- g. Click on OK to exit.

Use Windows (not Internet) Explorer to search all hard disks for \temp, \tmp, and \temporary folders, and delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use. If you can delete a file in a temp folder, it's not in use - if it's in use, Windows won't let you delete it.
-- a. Close all open applications, and open a Windows Explorer session. (Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer.)
-- b. Click on Tools > Find > Files or Folders.
-- c. Type temp in the Named: box.
-- d. Click on the arrow at the right end of the Look in: box and then click on the disk drive to be searched.
-- e. Click on Find Now to start the search.
-- f. Click on the temp folders found to open them.
-- g. Delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use.
-- h. Repeat for tmp and temporary folders.
-- i. Close Windows Explorer back to the Desktop.

Empty the Recycle Bin. If you're positive that no files have been deleted by mistake, do only steps g through i.
-- a. From the Desktop, right-click on the Recycle Bin.
-- b. Click on Open to view the Bin's contents.
-- c. Click on any file that was deleted by mistake.
-- d. Click on File > Restore.
-- e. Repeat as necessary.
-- f. Click on File > Close.
-- g. Right-click on the Recycle Bin.
-- h. Click on Empty Recycle Bin.
-- i. Click on Yes to confirm file deletion.

Then:
-- a. Remove your current Sound Blaster Live! driver using Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs.
----- 1. Click on Start > Control Panel, then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
----- 2. In the Currently installed programs box, click on the Sound Blaster entry.
----- 3. Click on Change (or Change/Remove).
----- 4. If prompted to confirm the removal, click Yes.
----- 5. Close Control Panel back to the Desktop.
-- b. Reboot, and cancel any attempt by Windows to install a sound driver.
-- c. Click on Start > Run, then Browse... to where you saved USBD_COMBDRV_LB_1_00_0030.exe.
-- d. Click on the file to put it in the Open: box, then click on OK to run it.
-- e. When the installation is complete, reboot.
-- f. Click on Start > Run, then Browse... to where you saved AUD_WEBUP_PCWDRV_1-84-40.exe.
-- g. Click on the file to put it in the Open: box, then click on OK to run it.
-- h. The file will auto-extract, and then the installation Wizard will start. Accept the install defaults as much as possible.
-- i. When the installation is complete, reboot.
-- j. Play Myst.

BTW, if you don't already have the URL, the Dell drivers and downloads for your Dimension 4550 are available here. The Dimension 4550 manual is available here.

Okay - I tried ALL of your suggestions, and nothing helped. I did notice that in the DxDiag music tab, I don't hear anything through the Creative SB Live! Series. I did hear music through the SB Live! 24-Bit External though...
I really appreciate all your help - is my computer just not able to play this game?

Some games have lots of problems with USB external sound chipsets, but let's not give up yet.

More suggestions:

Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges when doing any of these suggestions.

1. Change your hardware sound acceleration settings.
-- a. Click on Start > Run.
-- b. Type dxdiag in the Open: box.
-- c. Click OK.
-- d. Let the blue bar in the lower left corner of the main DxDiag window finish crawling and disappear.
-- e. Move the 'Hardware Sound Acceleration Level' sliders on all of the sound tabs completely to the left to the 'No acceleration' tick mark.
-- f. Close DxDiag, and play Myst.

If this solves the sound problem, try moving the SB Live! 24-Bit External tab's slider to the right for increased acceleration, one tick mark at a time. (The first sound tab, Sound 1, should be the tab for your SB Live! 24-Bit External. If it isn't, find the SB Live! 24-Bit External tab.) Close DxDiag and play Myst after each slider move. If the problem re-appears after a move, decrease acceleration by one tick mark to the left, and leave the slider in that position.

2. If moving the DxDiag sliders does NOT solve the sound problem, move the SB Live! 24-Bit External tab's slider completely to the left. Close DxDiag, then make the following QuickTime setting changes:
-- a. Click on Start > Control Panel.
-- b. Double-click on the QuickTime icon to bring up the QuickTime Settings window.
-- c. Select Sound Out in the selection box's drop-down menu. (Click on the down arrow at the right end of the selection box.)
-- d. Click on the Options box to bring up the DirectSound Options menu.
-- e. Click on the Use default DirectSound format box to un-check it, then click on OK to close the menu.
-- f. Make certain that:
----- 1. The Choose a device for playback: box shows 'DirectSound'.
----- 2. The Size: radio button is set to '8 bit'.
----- 3. The Use: button is set to 'Mono'.
-- g. In the Rate: box, select the lowest kHz setting, which should be 8.000 kHz.
-- h. Close the QuickTime Settings window, and play Myst.
-- i. If this doesn't solve the sound problem, repeat step g. and select the next highest kHz setting.
-- j. Close the QuickTime Settings window, and play Myst. Repeat for the next highest kHz setting if this doesn't solve the sound problem.
-- k. If you try each of the kHz settings with no success, reset Rate: to the lowest kHz setting.
-- l. Choose a different playback device in the Choose a device for playback: box. Play Myst. You may need to try each of the available playback devices (except 'Wave Device for Voice Modem'), playing Myst after each device change.

Okay, tried these. The sound got a little better - distorted glitches and snippets - but I still wasn't able to make anything out. And now the game has frozen up twice. I don't know if they're related, but it never froze up before...
I also tried someone else's idea about uninstalling QuickTime and reinstalling the version on the Myst disc. But when I click uninstall it opens the install shield thingy for a second and then closes it without doing anything. So I can't uninstall. What is all the trouble?
Again, thanks for your patience and help!

A question, which I probably should already have asked.

Why are you using an external USB sound device and not an internal PCI sound card? Problems with your motherboard and/or Win XP, maybe?

No, I'm a musician and I upload songs to my computer through it. My computer formerly had no audio "input".

Well, I'd have installed a Sound Blaster internal PCI card to obtain a MIDI port, but that's neither here nor there at this point.

To uninstall QuickTime:
-- a. Click on Start > Control Panel, then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
-- b. In the Currently installed programs box, click on the QuickTime entry.
-- c. Click on Change (or Change/Remove).
-- d. If prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.
-- e. Close Control Panel back to the Desktop, and reboot.

If this also gives a flash of InstallShield and no uninstall, re-install the QuickTime version you currently have installed (over-write the current installation), and reboot. Then use the above procedure to uninstall it.

Previous versions of QuickTime are available here, and version 7.1 is available here. To determine which QuickTime version you currently have intalled, open QuickTime and click on Help > About QuickTime Player.
