I played Myst some years ago. Now I want my own copy, but I'm not at all clear on what to buy. I have a pretty good PC, with a GeForce 8800GTS card and Vista Home Premium. I would like to start at the beginning and maybe work my way through the entire saga before I die. Is there, say, a "compendium" of the first N games, or are they all separate items? I get the impression that Vista may be a problem with some if you buy the wrong edition. Any advice would be welcome.

Welcome to the Forums!

I'd recommend starting with the Myst 10th Anniversary DVD Edition. This anthology contains updated versions of original Myst, Riven, and Exile (the first three of the Myst series, in that order). In addition, there are Myst IV: Revelation, Myst V: End of Ages, and Myst Uru: Complete Chronicles.

Also, you should strongly consider buying the Ubisoft-boxed versions of these games, rather than downloading them. There are many fewer problems with boxed games than with downloads!

The Myst series should run properly under Vista, but sometimes a little tweaking is required.

1. Some programs run in Vista only if you run them with full Administrator privileges and with the Run as administrator option enabled. See How to use User Account Control (UAC) in Windows Vista.

2. Install the latest Vista drivers for your video and sound chipsets. If you haven't checked for new drivers in the past week, do so now.

3. Take a look at July 2007 Windows Vista Application Compatibility Update. (If you've been using Windows Update regularly, this update should already have been installed.)

4. If you have problems with a game, try running the Program Compatibility Wizard. For details, see How to start the Program Compatibility Wizard in Windows Vista. Or, if you don't want to run the Wizard, you can just try Compatibility Mode, which is invoked as with Win XP.

5. You may need to try what’s called out in:
-- a. How to troubleshoot application compatibility issues in Windows Vista
-- b. How to troubleshoot issues that may prevent a program from being installed correctly on a Windows Vista-based computer
-- c. Advanced methods to troubleshoot a program that does not run as expected after it is installed on Windows Vista

As a further comment, whether you play any of the Myst-series games or not, you should consider downloading and installing these Four Must-Have Vista Updates. The fourth update mentioned, KB936710, applies only to SLI and CrossFire systems (two linked NVIDIA or AMD/ATI graphics cards).
