Hi there- we have Ages Of Myst (comprising Myst and Riven) which was for Windows 95/98.
This is for the grandkids to play on: meanwhile, Grandma has upgraded to Windows 2000, and the game (funnily enough) won't run.
The natives are getting restless.
Is there a patch that will make it work?
Excuse me for being daft, but I use Macs myself (ducks for cover).
Thanks in advance!

Which game are the grandkids trying to play - Myst, Exile, or Riven - and is it on the Windows 2000 machine?

First, since you originally posted in the "Myst III Exile - tips, hints, tech help and general discussion Forum", which wasn't the right one, I've moved this topic to the "Myst and RealMyst - tips, hints, tech help and general discussion Forum" (check the top of the page). I'll remove the shortcut in the Myst III Exile Forum after you tell me that you can find the topic in the Myst and RealMyst Forum, where you are now.

That aside, Win 2000 can be a real problem with games, since it's primarily intended as a business operating system. There are many similarities with Win XP, but Win 2K is not Win XP! However, we'll give it the old college try.

How, exactly, does the game not run? Please post all of the details you can, for example (but not limited to) the answers to the following questions:
-- Is this the DVD or CD version of Myst?
-- Did the game install with no problems (glitches, error messages, etc.)?
-- When the game tries to start, are there any error messages, and does the startup halt at the same point each time?
-- If Myst starts, where does it hang and what's on the screen at that point?
-- Are there any freezes requiring a system reboot during the start process?

And anything else that might help diagnose the problem.

In addition, please post a DxDiag report in this topic so that we can take a look at your system and make recommendations. The report will be long, but post *ALL* of it - clues to problem solutions are often buried deep in all that "stuff".
1. Press keys (win) + R, or click on Start > Run.
2. Type dxdiag in the box.
3. Click OK.
4. Let the blue bar in the lower left corner of the Dxdiag window finish crawling and disappear.
5. Run all of the tests you can on the Display, Sound and Music tabs. Do not neglect to do this step!
-- a. On the Display tab, click on the Test DirectDraw and Test Direct3D boxes, and follow the resulting instructions.
-- b. On all of the Sound tabs, click on the Test DirectSound box, and follow the resulting instructions.
-- c. On the Music tab, click on Test DirectMusic box, and follow the resulting instructions.
6. Click on the Save All Information button.
7. Close the DxDiag utility.
8. Now you have a DxDiag.txt file on your Desktop, or in the location where you have saved it.
Copy *ALL* of the contents of this file to the Windows Clipboard:
-- a. Double-click on the file to open it.
-- b. Right-click anywhere in the text, then click on Select All in the resulting menu.
-- c. Right-click on the highlighted text, then click on Copy in the resulting menu.
9. Paste the contents of the file from the Clipboard into a new post this topic:
-- a. With the mouse cursor at the upper left corner of the Quick Reply to: box, type in any additional details of your problem.
-- b. Position the mouse cursor at the left margin and one line down from your additional details, then right-click.
-- c. Click on Paste in the resulting menu.
-- d. Click on Post Now.

If the manufacturer and exact model number of the PC aren't shown under 'System Information' (System Manufacturer and System Model) at the top of the report, also include that information in your post.

For the record, there's a Myst Masterpiece Edition patch for Win 2000, available here in the Update column.
