MME installs and loads fine, but when the game starts (I think) I hear sounds (wind, I think) and my mouse changes to a pointer at some places, and I can access the menu, but the screen stays black, even at 100% brightness and contrast. Help please!

Are you running Windows XP? If so, I think you'll have to run Myst MasterPiece Edition in Windows 95 or Windows 98 compatibility mode.
Right click the shortcut you use to start MME, and select Properties from the popup menu.
Activate the Compatibility tab.
Tick the first check box.
Select Windows 95 or Windows 98/Windows ME from the dropdown list.
Tick the 'Disable visual themes' and "Disable advanced text services" check boxes.
Click OK.

Note: I'd restart your PC before trying MME again.

Only a suggestion`:

If I was you, I would post a copy of a "dxdiag report"
so that Heimdall G could have a look at your pc and beeing able to make appropriate suggestions.

"How to post a "dxdiag report", go at the bottom of this post...click here

You have only 300 MB of free space on your hard disk. Combined with virtual memory paging file disk space usage, this puts you dangerously close to having *zero* free space and getting a "drive cannot be accessed" error when you try to boot up. Which can ruin your whole day.

You really should install a larger hard disk as soon as possible! And free up at least 700 MB of space on your existing drive until you can install the larger disk. You can quickly free up hard disk space as follows, and these steps will also prepare for changing your video driver to address the black screen problem:

1. Clear your Internet Explorer caches.
-- a. Close all open applications.
-- b. Open a single Internet Explorer session.
-- c. Click on Tools > Internet Options.
-- d. Click on Delete Cookies > OK.
-- e. Click on Delete Files (check the 'Delete all offline content' box) > OK.
-- f. Click on Clear History > Yes.
-- g. Click on OK to exit.

2. Use Windows (not Internet) Explorer to search your hard disk for \temp, \tmp, and \temporary folders, and delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use. If you can delete a file in a temp folder, it's not in use - if it's in use, Windows won't let you delete it.
-- a. Close all open applications, and open a Windows Explorer session. (Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > Windows Explorer.)
-- b. Click on Tools > Find > Files or Folders.
-- c. Type temp in the Named: box.
-- d. Click on the arrow at the right end of the Look in: box and then click on the disk drive to be searched.
-- e. Click on Find Now to start the search.
-- f. Click on the temp folders found to open them.
-- g. Delete any files in these folders that aren't currently in use.
-- h. Repeat for tmp and temporary folders.
-- i. Close Windows Explorer back to the Desktop.

3. Empty the Recycle Bin. If you're positive that no files have been deleted by mistake, do only steps g through i.
-- a. From the Desktop, right-click on the Recycle Bin.
-- b. Click on Open to view the Bin's contents.
-- c. Click on any file that was deleted by mistake.
-- d. Click on File > Restore.
-- e. Repeat as necessary.
-- f. Click on File > Close.
-- g. Right-click on the Recycle Bin.
-- h. Click on Empty Recycle Bin.
-- i. Click on Yes to confirm file deletion.

4. Defragment your hard disk. Refer to How To Analyze and Defragment a Disk in Windows XP and How to Defragment Your Disk Drive Volumes in Windows XP. Executive Software's Diskeeper 10.0 is another option.

The above may not free up enough disk space, however. To free up more space, see Description of the Disk Cleanup Tool in Windows XP.

Suggestions for your black screen with MME:

1. Your currently-installed video driver is Catalyst 5.5. For your Radeon 9600 chipset, install:
-- Catalyst 3.8
-- Catalyst 4.12, if 3.8 doesn't help
-- Catalyst 6.7, if 4.12 doesn't help.

For instructions on downloading these drivers, look under Installing ATI Radeon Drivers, "2. If the driver installed by...." in Myst IV: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP. Follow the driver installation procedure in that topic under Installing ATI Radeon Drivers, "3. Here's the driver installation procedure". You need to install the latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c only once, during your first driver change.

2. If you continue to have video problems after changing video drivers, try some video setting changes. Before changing anything, note what you started with, so that you can go back to those settings if desired. Right-click on a blank area of the Desktop, then:
-- a. Click on Properties in the resulting drop-down menu.
-- b. Click on Settings > Advanced > video card name. You should now be looking at the options or setup menu for your video chipset.
-- d. Mostly, you want to set 'off' as the default, or 'controlled by application'. If there's an Advanced selection button, click on it to see more menu choices. In particular, set:
----- 1. Anisotropic filtering (AF) and antialiasing (AA) 'off' or 'controlled by application'. If AF or AA optimization are choices, set them to 'off' or 'none'.
----- 2. Trilinear optimization to 'off', 'none', or 'controlled by application'.
----- 3. Vertical sync to 'controlled by application', or 'off' if it's initially set to 'controlled by application'.
----- 4. Image setting midway between 'performance' and 'quality'.
-- e. If you change any settings, don't forget to click on Apply or Save. Then exit to the Desktop.
-- f. Play MME.

None of the above helps, the only difference is that the "hand" pointer on-sreen is now brown instead of white...

Do NOT boot up with the MME disc in the drive.

If you followed suggestion 1, above, you installed Catalyst 3.8 and 4.12, and neither helped. If not, try those drivers!

Assuming that you did try Catalyst 3.8 and 4.12, further suggestions:

1. Reset your virtual memory paging file. Before changing your paging file settings, note what you started with, so that you can go back to those settings if desired. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, then:
-- a. Click Start, right-click My Computer, and then click Properties.
-- b. In the System Properties dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
-- c. In the Performance pane, click Settings.
-- d. In the Performance Options dialog box, click the Advanced tab.
-- e. In the Virtual memory pane, click Change.
-- f. Under Drive , click the drive that contains the paging file you want to change.
-- g. Under Paging file size for selected drive, click Custom size.
-- h. Change both Initial size and Maximum size to 1024, the proper value in megabytes.
-- j. Click OK to close the Performance Options dialog box, and then click OK to close the System Properties dialog box. Close everything back to the Desktop.
-- k. Reboot, and play MME.

2. If you have lots of processes and applications running in the background, they could be interfering with MME. Use Windows Task Manager to close everything except for Explorer.exe, Ctfmon.exe, and whatever your hardware needs. DO NOT leave your Internet connection active after doing this, especially if you have only a software firewall. An active connection with no firewall is an open invitation to hackers, who are not your friends!
-- a. Close your Internet connection.
-- b. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del once, and then click on Task Manager.
-- c. Click on the Applications tab.
-- d. Click on the desired application to highlight it.
-- e. Click on End Task.
-- f. Repeat this procedure until all unnecessary background applications are closed, including your anti-virus program and software firewall.
-- g. Click on the Processes tab.
-- h. Click on the desired process to highlight it.
-- i. Click on End Process.
-- j. Repeat this procedure until all unnecessary background processes are closed. If you aren't sure which processes can be safely closed, check out the AnswersThatWork Task List Programs index. The most common tasks are described, and which ones are essential and which can be safely closed are noted.
-- k. WITHOUT rebooting, play MME.

3. Re-install MME from a clean boot. First, use Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs to remove your existing MME installation.
-- a. Click on Start > Control Panel, then double-click Add or Remove Programs.
-- c. In the Currently installed programs box, click on the Myst Masterpiece Edition entry.
-- d. Click on Change (or Change/Remove).
-- e. If prompted to confirm the removal of the program, click Yes.
-- f. Close Control Panel back to the Desktop, and reboot.

Confirm that there are no smudges, fingerprints, deep scratches, etc., on the MME disc. Then, re-install MME:
-- a. Be certain that you're logged into Windows with full Administrator privileges (NOT into a Power User or a Limited User Account).
-- b. Use Windows Explorer to search for and delete any and all remaining MME files and folders anywhere on your hard disk. For example, if it exists, delete the folder "\Myst Masterpiece Edition" in "C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Myst Masterpiece Edition".
-- c. Click on Start > Run.
-- d. Type msconfig in the Open box, then click on OK.
-- e. Click on Selective Startup on the General tab.
-- f. Under Selective Startup, clear the check boxes for:
----- 1. Process SYSTEM.INI File
----- 2. Process WIN.INI File
----- 3. Load Startup Items
-- g. On the Services tab, click the Hide All Microsoft Services check box, then click Disable All.
-- h. Click on OK, and then click on Restart.
-- i. When bootup is complete, insert the MME DVD into the drive and let it spin up to speed.
-- i. Click on Start > Run.
-- j. Browse to Setup.exe on the MME DVD, and double-click on this file to put it in the Open: box.
-- k. Click on OK to start the installation process.
-- l. Follow the installation Wizard's instructions. Accept the install defaults.
-- m. Even if you get a "Finished" message from the install Wizard, wait for all hard disk activity to stop - then and only then close the Wizard.
-- n. Restore the settings you changed in steps d. through g.
----- 1. Click Start > Run.
----- 2. Type msconfig in the Open box, then click on OK.
----- 3. Click on Normal Startup - load all device drivers and services on the General tab.
----- 4. Click on OK, and then click on Restart to reboot into normal Windows.
-- o. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and play MME.

Hi guys
I have the same problem ignoren has: I installed MME successfully, but when I play, I get a black screen where I can see nothing but the hand of the mouse. When I put the mouse near the menu, the menu appears correctly and I can use it, but nothing else is visible. When I exit I can see the credits screen (only white letters on black). I can hear wind sound.

I have XP home addition, sp 2. My graphic card is NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT version 7.1.2.5. I have a much better system then recommended, lots of memory and disk space. My QuickTime version is 7.1 and DirectX 9.0c.
I tried playing with the "computability" property but nothing helps. I tried all the combinations with Windows 95 and Windows 98 compatibility states.
The box says it will work on XP and any card. It doesn't work on mine...

Is there something I should do? Is it possible that my graphics card is not compatible?

Thanks in advance
T.

Suggestions, to do in the order shown:

Never boot up with the MME DVD in the drive. Always log into Windows with full Administrator privileges when rebooting.

1. Change your video driver. Install NVIDIA's ForceWare 91.31 and then version 77.77 (or 71.84) if 91.31 doesn't help, following the instructions under Installing NVIDIA Drivers in Myst IV: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP. Try installing the latest end-user runtime version of DirectX 9.0c as instructed, even if you think you already have it. You only need to do this once. When driver installation is complete, play MME.

2. Close all open applications from the Desktop. Then use Windows Task Manager to close all unnecessary background applications and processes except for Explorer.exe, Ctfmon.exe, and whatever your hardware needs:
-- a. Close your Internet connection.
-- b. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del once, and then click on Task Manager.
-- c. Click on the Applications tab.
-- d. Click on the desired application to highlight it.
-- e. Click on End Task.
-- f. Repeat this procedure until all unnecessary background applications are closed, including your anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up stopper programs and software firewall.

DO NOT leave your Internet connection active after doing this, especially if you have only a software firewall. An active connection with no firewall is an open invitation to hackers.

3. Uninstall QuickTime 7.1, and install Quicktime 6.3 from the MME DVD.
-- a. Close all open applications from the Desktop. Also close or disable any anti-virus/spyware/adware/pop-up stopper programs running in the background.
-- b. Click on Start > Control Panel, then double-click on Add or Remove Programs.
-- c. In the Currently installed programs box, click on the Qui
