Ok,

Big error in the Mechanical Age elevator the first time I tried to use it. It locked up. I kept doing alt-tab, and kept selecting Myst and hitting enter. I even tried taking the cd out and putting back in while this was going on. Finally, got the elevator to go up, I have no clue how. Elevator has worked fine since.

Now just frustrated by the puzzle with the elevator... Wink

I did use safe mode, but with Quicktime 7.1.3, no settings will let it work for all the essential elements of the game.

If I were you I would try Quicktime 6.3 from oldversion.com and see if you can get in the forechamber by the dock. Even though I encountered glitches with 6.3, none of them made the game unplayable... and only one made the game crash, which was really easy to avoid.

EDIT

Another thing you can do if an essential animation is missing... search the DVD for the Quicktime movie.

For Atrus's message in the forechamber by the dock, go to My computer > Myst, then right click and select "open." From there go to QTW > MYST > VLTATRUS, and that should open the video for you.

Obviously, any version of Quicktime can play these videos. It's playing the videos IN CONTEXT that screws everything up... I wish I could figure out something to do to make everything compatible...

Hi,

Thanks for the information. I was able to finish the game yesterday using the same configuration I had been without further incident after the Mechanical Age Elevator. I ended up with Quicktime 6.5.1 in safe mode. Thanks for the tip on viewing videos directly in their folder. That is very handy for viewing the videos, or whichever ones I want to. I tried going back to the forechamber after later, and for some reason it worked, although its usefulness had long since passed. That's a really fun game.

Now I can try Riven sometime in the near future!

Hello everyone. I bought the MME box set last night and while playing, the game would freeze up any time a video was to be shown. I already removed the new quicktime program and installed the old version from the disc to great success. However, iTunes, which I need for syncing my ipod, cannot work without the newest version of quicktime, so I have to reinstall. Is there no setting in Quicktime 7 that will allow Myst to function properly?

Depends on type of computer? My Mac PowerPC runs Myst Masterpiece (in Classic) just fine under QuickTime v 7.4.5 (for the Mac).

Here are a couple of things that may help:

1. Install and configure QuickTime 7.5 (assuming you're running Win XP).
-- a. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
----- 1. Do NOT boot up with the MME disc in the drive (or with a disc in any drive).
-- b. Use Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs to uninstall QuickTime.
----- 1. Click on Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Wait for the "Currently installed programs" list to populate, which might take a minute or so.
----- 2. Scroll down the "Currently installed programs" list to the QuickTime entry, and click on the entry to highlight it.
----- 3. Click on Remove or Change/Remove, and follow the prompts to uninstall QuickTime. If you have more than one instance of QuickTime installed, repeat to uninstall all instances.
----- 4. Close Add or Remove Programs and Control Panel back to the Desktop.
----- 5. Use Windows (not Internet) Explorer to browse to C:\Program Files, and delete the C:\Program Files\QuickTime folder. Be careful to delete only the \QuickTime folder!
-- c. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
----- 1. Do NOT boot up with the MME disc in the drive (or with a disc in any drive).
-- d. Download QuickTime 7.5, available here, and install it.
----- 1. Open QuickTime 7.5 and click on Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences...
----- 2. Click on the Advanced tab.
----- 3. Under Video, click on the "Safe Mode (GDI Only)" radio button to activate it.
----- 4. Under Media Encoding, click on the "Enable encoding using legacy codecs" check box to check it.
----- 5. Click on Apply > OK, and then close QuickTime back to the Desktop.
-- e. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- f. Insert the MME disc into the drive and allow it to spin up to speed.
----- 1. If it autostarts, cancel back to the Desktop.
----- 2. Do NOT install DirectX or QuickTime from the DVD.
-- g. Click on the MME Desktop icon to start the game.

2. When you start MME, click on the screen *immediately* when the Ubisoft logo comes up. Otherwise, you may get an error that closes the game.

If the above don't help, you're probably left with uninstalling QuickTime 7.5, installing the earlier QuickTime version from the DVD, completing the game, then re-installing QuickTime 7.5.

Hi Heimdall,
I never tried this approach before but it worked beautifully. I am running Vista 32 bit OS. I always had trouble with Riven to run, but with this method it worked well. I loaded all of the other games on the Master Piece edition and they all worked from the icon. I didn't get into playing them. I just started and got to the first screen to start playing. So they they all started without messing with changing the version of Quicktime from the latest version. I thank you for this info. Now the true test is when I start to work thru the game. It should work now that I know they all start and I get to look around.

You're welcome!

Being able to start the games with QuickTime 7.4.5 should mean that they'll play properly all the way through. If you find one that doesn't, please post back with details.

hi.

i have vista with the latest quicktime and i installed myst ME no probs and was able to play straight away, just like gnorke. however, like someone earlier, it crashed upon entering the log cabin. don't know if gnorke had this same problem? after searching this forum i just uninstalled both myst and quicktime and then re-installed myst using the quicktime 4 supplied, as i do have i tunes but can live without it for now. voila, now no probs at all. although i don't know why the so called 'updates' we are always forced to install are not made compatible with there own previous versions. that sucks. i also don't know why quicktime 4 occupies 2.5 mb on my hard drive but quicktime 7 is like 70 odd. that also sucks.

anway ... never even heard of this game until 1 week ago when i was chatting to a colleague about my re=discovery of monkey island, and he recommended this. i heard somewhere that the hints are not in the original game, is that right?

edit!! forgot to mention both times i installed myst (pre and post quicktime 4) i did it from my hard drive cd image, and then played with the disk in the drive. i tried once to install straight from the disk and it didn't work - i got the black screen with pointer and sound which some others have reported. hope that's helpful to someone.

Regarding your question on hints, the DigitalGuide in-game help system is not in the original game, only in MME. The level of help ranges from broad hints to specific solutions.

So, is there no way to make the log cabin portion work while allowing iTunes to work too? I use them both frequently and would like to be able to toggle between the two.
