I have been trying to get MME to run on XP for the last 5 hours with no success. I've tried everything mentioned in this thread, starting with updating directx and my nvidia drivers, then installing patches and then fiddling with quicktime settings with no success. I have the same problem that has been previously mentioned, ie sound and pointer but a black screen. Any other suggestions of things to try?

I would like to find out too. Out of the box, on Windows XP, Exile seems to work fine but Myst and Riven don't even launch.

I am having "THE EXACT 'SAME' ISSUE!". One thing that did work for me was switching from my dual core AMD X2 to my single core Intel 4 laptop. Is MME compatible with dual core procs? Other that, I going to try to make MME work with the QT stuff yawl are talking about. Have not tried Riven or Exile. Will cross that bridge when I get there ;-)

MME may or may not be compatible with a given dual-core processor. I successfully play MME on a 3.2 GHz P4 system with processor affinity set to allow MME to run on both CPU 0 and CPU 1, but that may not work for everyone's system! For reference, see:
-- a. Windows 2000 Performance Guide. Scroll down to Processor affinity. ("Taskman" is Windows Task Manager.)
-- b. FS2004 Supports Dual Processor / Dual Core!!!!, first post, Justifications:, 2). "FS2004" is Flight Simulator 2004.
-- c. Methods for setting affinity masks as described in ImageCFG.
-- d. RunFirst.

If you're running Win XP, the following ought to solve your MME problems.

Do NOT boot up with the MME disc in the drive, or with any disc in any drive. ALWAYS log into Windows with full Administrator priviliges (NOT into a Limited User or Power User account), and close all open applications before doing any of the following.

First, reset processor affinity for MME. This may not be necessary for your system, but it's the "fail safe" position.
-- a. Insert the MME disc into the drive, and allow it to spin up to speed. If it autostarts, cancel back to the Desktop.
-- b. Click on the MME start icon to start the game. (If the game won't start, continue to the "Then, if setting processor affinity doesn't help...." steps below.)
-- c. Press Alt+Tab (both keys at the same time) to go back to the Desktop.
-- d. Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Del (all 3 keys at the same time).
-- e. Click on the Processes tab, and right-click on the Myst.exe process listing.
-- f. Click on Set Affinity..., and uncheck the CPU 1 box.
-- g. Click on OK, and close Task Manager.
-- h. Alt+Tab back to MME, and close back to the Desktop.
-- i. Click on the MME start icon to start the game.

Then, if setting processor affinity doesn't help, leave affinity set as above and do the following. There's a lot of it, but everything may be needed. And it's best to print out the instructions, so that you can check off each step as you complete it.
-- a. Use Control Panel's Add or Remove Programs to uninstall MME.
----- 1. Click on Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Wait for the "Currently installed programs" list to populate, which might take a minute or so.
----- 2. Scroll down the "Currently installed programs" list to the Myst Masterpiece Edition entry, and click on the entry to highlight it.
----- 3. Click on Remove or Change/Remove, and follow the prompts to uninstall MME. If you have more than one innstance of MME installed, repeat to uninstall all instances.
----- 4. Do not close Add or Remove Programs - continue to the next steps.

-- b. Uninstall QuickTime.
----- 1. Scroll down the "Currently installed programs" list to the QuickTime entry, and click on the entry to highlight it.
----- 2. Click on Remove or Change/Remove, and follow the prompts to uninstall QuickTime. If you have more than one innstance of QuickTime installed, repeat to uninstall all instances.
----- 3. Close Add or Remove Programs and Control Panel back to the Desktop.
-- c. Use Windows (not Internet) Explorer to browse to C:\Program Files, and delete the C:\Program Files\QuickTime folder. Be careful to delete only the \QuickTime folder!
-- d. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.

-- e. Go to OldVersion.com, and download the QuickTime 6.5.0 install file (quicktime650.exe) to a folder, not to the Desktop.
----- 1. Click on Start > Run, and browse to the folder where you saved quicktime650.exe.
----- 2. Double-click on the file to put it in the Open: box.
----- 3. Click on OK to install QuickTime. Accept the installation defaults, including a QuickTime start icon on the Desktop.
----- 4. When installation is complete, close back to the Desktop.

-- f. Click on the QuickTime start icon to start the program.
----- 1. On the top taskbar, click on Edit > Preferences > QuickTime Preferences.
----- 2. On the QuickTime Settings panel, select About QuickTime to verify that you have QuickTime 6.5.
----- 3. Select Browser Plug-in and click on the "Play movies automatically" box to put a check in it.
----- 4. Click on MIME Settings.... Click on the "+" by each of the following to expand the listing and:
-------- a. For Streaming - Streaming movies, click on both boxes to put checks in them.
-------- b. For Video - Video only and video with audio file formats, check all of the boxes EXCEPT for "SMIL 1.0 file".
-------- c. For Audio - Audio only file formats, check all of the boxes EXCEPT for "Sound Designer II file".
-------- d. For MPEG - MPEG system, video, and audio files, check ALL of the boxes.
-------- e. For MP3 - MPEG layer III movies and streams, uncheck ALL of the boxes.
-------- f. For Images - Still image files, check all of the boxes EXCEPT for "BMP image file".
-------- g. For Miscellaneous - Miscellaneous file formats, check all of the boxes EXCEPT for "Flash file".
-------- h. Click on Apply > OK.
----- 5. Select File Type Associations, and click on File Types.... Click on the "+" by each of the following to expand the listing and:
-------- a. For Streaming - Streaming movies, uncheck BOTH of the boxes.
-------- b. For Video - Video only and video with audio file formats, check ONLY the box for "QuickTime movie".
-------- c. For Audio - Audio only file formats, check all of the boxes EXCEPT for "WAVE audio file".
-------- d. For MPEG - MPEG system, video, and audio files, check all of the boxes EXCEPT for "MPEG media file" and "SD video file".
-------- e. For MP3 - MPEG layer III movies and streams, uncheck ALL of the boxes.
-------- f. For Images - Still image files, check ONLY the boxes for "MacPaint image file", "PICT image file", and "QuickTime Image file".
-------- g. For Miscellaneous - Miscellaneous file formats, uncheck the boxes for "GIF image file" and "JPEG image file" (check the other boxes).
-------- h. Click on Apply > OK.
----- 6. Select Instant-On and check the "Enable Instant-On" box.
----- 7. Select Music, and click on the "General MIDI" radio button to activate it.
----- 8. Select Sound Out, and:
-------- a. Under Choose a device for playback:, select "waveOut: Windows' preferred device".
-------- b. For Rate:, select "22.050 kHz".
-------- c. For Size:, select "8 bit".
-------- d. For Use:, select "Mono".
----- 9. Select Video Settings, and click on the "Safe Mode (GDI Only)" radio button to activate it.
-- g. Close the QuickTime Settings panel, and then close QuickTime back to the Desktop.

-- h. Insert the MME disc into the drive, and allow it to spin up to speed. If it autostarts, cancel back to the Desktop. DO NOT install DirectX or QuickTime from the DVD!
----- 1. Click on Start > Run, and browse to Setup.exe on the MME disc.
----- 2. Double-click on Setup.exe to put it in the Open: box.
----- 3. Click on OK to install MME. Accept the installation defaults, including an MME start icon on the Desktop.
----- 4. When installation is complete, close back to the Desktop.
----- 5. Remove the MME disc from the drive.

-- i. Right-click on the MME start icon, and:
----- 1. Click on Properties in the resulting drop-down menu, and click on the Compatibility tab.
----- 2. Under Compatibility Mode, click on the "Run this program in compatibility mode for:" box to check it.
-------- a. Select "Windows 98 / Windows Me" mode.
----- 3. Under Display settings, click on the "Disable visual themes" box to check it. Leave the other two boxes unchecked.
----- 3. Under Input settings, click on the "Turn off advanced text services for this program" box to check it.
----- 4. Click on Apply > OK.

-- j. Install the latest driver for your video chipset as detailed in Myst Masterpiece Edition and realMyst: Installing Video Drivers With Win XP, including installing the latest end-user runtime release of DirectX 9.0c. When installation is complete, reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.

-- k. Insert the MME disc into the drive, and allow it to spin up to speed. If it autostarts, cancel back to the Desktop.
-- l. Click on the MME start icon, and play MME.

Yes that made it for me Wink2

Thank you for your support Heimdall.

I think what did it is the quicktime 6.5 settings you described as all the rest was fresh install+patch. BTW I use a E2160 CPU which is dual core and it works fine. Only thing for me starting the game with win98/me compatibility did not work as it was complaining that it only runs on 95 and "you run NT" and the 95 also did not work I had to choose win2000 compatibility.

This was i think the worst install attempt I ever had! Smash

I set the Sound Out rate to the HIGHEST setting, 192 kHz for me, using QT 7.1.3.

Works like a Charms blow-pop

Many Thanks Heimdall G.
I was fretting about Riven not booting until I followed this GIANT list of "stuff" (for lack of a less-offensive way to put it) =]
Seems to run fine now....at first glance.
Still wondering why they state the MME is "revised" to run on XP....when all the above must be done in order for it to work properly!?
My Husband also thanks you for going through all this trouble to list each step so wonderfully.

To Heimdall and others posting their expereiences and tips: Thanks a lot for the excellent help!

I also was lost and now it works fine. It used to work always on my older machine, and I assume the quicktime stuff being the cause.

For the record:
-Quicktime 6.5
with the settings as described by Heimdall
-XP sp2
fully updated (do sp2 doesn't seem to be an issue, as I have seen suggested on another forum, no Heimdalls around there though ;-)
-Intel Q6600
(procesor affinity not changed, so number of cores doesn't seem to be an issue)
-NVidea 8800GT with latest drivers
-directX 9c (I have noticed already many times directX does a wonderfull job being backwards compatible)
-Myst patch not even installed
(so also this one does not seem to help on the matters)
-Myst running in compatibility mode Win98
(update: other boxes unchecked)

I'm going to give it a try with a newer Quicktime-Itunes combo and will try to let you know. (But I already wanted to shout my happiness about the working install of the roofs right now ;-)

Thanks again,
Dommel

Little update, maybe saving some time for some. First of all actually the credits go to Heimdall for his great step-by-step instructions. Thanks again for the input, I'm just building on it.

I found that quicktime 6.5 installed with everything defaulted to the suggested settings needs only one change to get MME playing on my machine. Of course this doesn't mean it'll be the same for your computer ;-).

Go Edit > Preferences > Quicktime Preferences > Select Video Settings from dropdown (last one) > Select Safe Mode (GDI Only) OR uncheck Enable DCI (others can stay checked) > Close the window.

It even works flawlessly without setting anything in the compatibility mode.

I also experimented a bit with Quicktime 7.3.x and 7.1.6, but both were no success. (Tried it because itunes likes the newer quicktime.)

Regards, Dommel

Ok,

Thanks everyone for all of the info here it has helped a lot. I bought the 10th anniversary edition and tried to run Myst Masterpiece. It quit immediately and said the program had to quit for technical reasons.

Here are some things I did, and I don't know which of them led to resolution, but it did work for me:

Uninstall Myst Masterpiece.
Uninstall Quicktime.
Install latest version of Quicktime from Apple website.
Install Myst Masterpiece.

Restart computer.
In Control Panel -> Quicktime -> Advanced set to Safe Mode

This lets the UbiSoft logo come up, and then you must click the screen immediately when you see the logo. If you do not, then you will get an error that will close the program.

This got me into the start of the game.

Note: This is not in compatibility mode.

This works at first, like you said it does...

but as soon as I enter the log cabin at all, Myst encounters and error and needs to close. Dunno why it hates the log cabin. I'm sure there are more places in the game where it would do this, I just have yet to discover them.

It's too bad, though. Using the newest version of quicktime doesn't freak out when I'm trying to save/restore a game... I guess there are some things it can't handle though.

EDIT

I managed to get into the game and even the log cabin by using Quicktime 7.1.3 and clicking to the game straightaway (no compatibility mode). However, the game will crash if you try to look at the red or blue book. It's my experience that if the animation in the beginning of the game, the Cyan logo, makes your computer crash, other integral animations inside the game will also make it crash.

However, Quicktime 7.1.3 processes the way into Channelwood properly; using 6.3 and compatibility mode made getting in mostly guess-and-check (the tree and the sounds and everything were all off). Also, with the new version of Quicktime my game doesn't sound like it's about to die whenever I try to save/restore the game. Would using Quicktime 6.5 fix these things as well?

I'm just curious at this point. I finished Myst last night, and reinstalled the recent Quicktime. I don't know if I could have finished it, though, if I hadn't already been through it four times and knew my way around everything. It was too glitchy. If I want to play it again, I want to know how to go about it without encountering the same glitchyness.

Glitches I encountered with Quicktime 6.3 -- from disc: (beware spoilers)

- the elevator in the Mechanical age would sometimes freeze up and the sound would go crazy. If I minimized the game and brought it back up it would stop, though. To avoid it I learned to press the button and get out as fast as possible, giving it no chance to blink even once.

- saving/restoring the game would make the game freeze and sound go crazy for up to thirty seconds. The save/restore always went through, but it made me nervous every time.

- when playing the sounds back at the satellite terminal in the Selenetic age, the sound would go screwy before playing them right. Just had to endure.

- Getting into Channelwood was a nightmare. Turning the red wheel to get the tree up would cause the sound to go screwy randomly, and it would freeze and sound terrible for several seconds before going back to normal. The sound of the tree going up/down never played right, even as the needle moved. I managed to get in the door on a slice of luck each time, but the door sunk into the ground very, very, slooooooowly. Made me nervous.

- Once, the game crashed when I tried to watch a video in the red book the second time in a row. I never tried it again, I was so scared of crashes.

Does a different version of Quicktime fix these things?

Hi,

I switched to Quicktime version 6.5.2 from oldversion.com. This lets the movies play without error, so I was able to use the red and blue books without error. I am not using compatibility mode. However, now the game will lock up whenever I enter the forechamber by the dock. I do not know if there are other trouble points to come. I used my old strategy guide (from when I played years and years ago) to look up the content of the message in the forechamber; hopefully this is available somewhere online for those who don't have a guide. Will keep on the lookout for more lockup points and keep reporting.

Tried Riven, and works fine as long as compatibility for Windows 98 is activated.

By the way, are you using Safe Mode in Quicktime? I think it is really important. Try:
Control Panel -> Quicktime -> Video Settings
-> Safe Mode

Thanks!
