I just bought the 10th Anniversary DVD edition, and I'm having some problems.

Myst loads, but there is no image. All I get is a black screen, a cursor, and sound.

Riven doesn't load at all. It simply dumps me back on the desktop.

Exile seems to work fine, which is odd.

I think the problem may be because I don't have Quicktime. However, when I use the Quicktime installers provided on the discs, it doesn't work. It says it installs Quicktime, but when I actually try to open Quicktime, I get an error message saying it hasn't been installed.

Any suggestions?

Here's an update on the situation:

I tried messing with the compatibility for MME. That accomplished absolutely nothing.

I tried uninstalling Quicktime 6.3 and installing QT 7. It doesn't work, either.

And yet Exile works fine, which makes no sense at all.

I'm about to go crazy. Somebody please help me here.

I solved it. Thumbs Up I uninstalled Quicktime, deleted the System 32 Quicktime folder, uninstalled all of the Myst games, then reinstalled QT 7. That made Quicktime work, which made Riven work.

I'm not sure what I did to get ME to work. I installed the mystmaster patch, but that didn't help. So I uninstalled the game yet again, reinstalled it, and for some reason it worked then.

yes, ive tried EVERYTHING. I know its some kind of quicktime error but i dont know what to do to fix it. i am using windows xp but it says its compatible with xp on the box. and when ever i try to use the version of quicktime they have on the disc (6.3) it doesnt run either, i get an error. i tried updating it then quicktime worked...but myst still didnt. i tried downloading quicktime version 7.x and then myst ran but no picture showed up...just the sounds and cursor showed up. i am completely clueless on how to fix this.

Also i can get riven to run...but then it freezes right when you see a guy at a desk...i dont know how to fix this either

Heimdall G is the Wintel expert on this forum; in lieu of his presence on this thread at the moment, I would suggest you read his thread on video drivers.

Ah, but I am here. I’m *always* here.

bloutrunch,

You should install the latest driver for your video chipset, as per wstrohm, above.

Suggestions, to do in the order shown and assuming you’re running Win XP:

When doing any of the following, do NOT boot up with the MME disc in the drive, or a disc in any drive if you have more than one.

1. Download and apply the Myst Masterpiece Edition patch, available here from MYSTerium.
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges and close all open applications.
-- b. Download mystmaster2k_e.exe to a folder, NOT to the Desktop.
-- c. Click on Start > Run.
-- d. Browse to the folder to which you saved mystmaster2k_e.exe, and double-click on the file to put it on the Open: box.
-- e. Click on OK, then click on Next > Next.
-- f. Click on the "..." (3 dots in a box) and browse to C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Myst Masterpiece Edition.
-- g. Click on C:\Program Files\Ubi Soft\Myst Masterpiece Edition to put it in the box, then click on OK.
-- h. Click on Next > Start to apply the patch. You should see “myst.exe: successfully applied”.
-- i. Click on Next > Exit.
-- j. Right-click on the MME start icon, and click on Properties in the resulting drop-down menu.
-- k. Click on the Compatibility tab, then click on the “Run this program in compatibility mode for:” box to put a check in it.
-- l. Click on the down arrow at the right end of the selection box, and click on Windows 2000 to put it in the box.
-- m. Click on Apply > OK.
-- n. Start MME.

2. If the above doesn’t help, uninstall all versions of QuickTime, and install version QuickTime 6.3 from the MME DVD. (Do not reverse what you did in suggestion 1.)
-- a. Log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- b. Click on Start > Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs. Wait for the installed programs list to populate, which might take a minute or two.
-- c. Scroll down the list to the QuickTime entry and click on it, then click on Remove or Change/Remove.
-- d. Follow the prompts to uninstall QuickTime. If you have more than one version of QuickTime installed, repeat to uninstall all of them.
-- e. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- f. Insert the MME disc into the drive and allow it to spin up to speed.
-- g. Click on Start > Run, and browse to the \Quicktime for PC and Mac\v6.3 for Windows 98 and up\English folder on the MME disc.
-- h. Double-click on QuickTimeInstaller.exe to put the file in the Open: box, and click on OK to run it.
-- i. Follow the prompts to install QuickTime 6.3. When installation is complete, close back to the Desktop.
-- j. Reboot, log into Windows with full Administrator privileges, and close all open applications.
-- k. Start MME.

But did you do it *exactly* as per the above instructions?? "Almost" doesn't count!

Try printing out the instructions and follow them, checking off each step as you do it.

Well, if you’re willing to give it one last shot, post a DxDiag report in this topic. Maybe we can spot something and make recommendations.

To post a DxDiag report:
1. Click on Start > Run.
2. Type dxdiag in the Open: box.
3. Click on OK.
4. Let the blue bar in the lower left corner of the Dxdiag window finish crawling and disappear.
5. Run all of the tests you can on the Display, Sound and Music tabs. Do not neglect to do this step!
-- a. On the Display tab, click on the Test DirectDraw and Test Direct3D boxes, and follow the resulting instructions.
-- b. On all of the Sound tabs, click on the Test DirectSound box, and follow the resulting instructions.
-- c. On the Music tab, click on Test DirectMusic box, and follow the resulting instructions.
6. Click on the Save All Information button.
7. Close the DxDiag utility.
8. Now you have a DxDiag.txt file on your Desktop, or in the location where you have saved it.
Copy *ALL* of the contents of this file to the Windows Clipboard:
-- a. Double-click on the file to open it.
-- b. Right-click anywhere in the text, then click on Select All in the resulting menu.
-- c. Right-click on the highlighted text, then click on Copy in the resulting menu.
9. Paste the contents of the file from the Clipboard into a new post in this topic:
-- a. With the mouse cursor at the upper left corner of the Quick Reply to: box, type in any further details of your problem.
-- b. Position the mouse cursor at the left margin and one line down from your further details, then right-click.
-- c. Click on Paste in the resulting menu.
-- d. Click on Post Now.

If the manufacturer and exact model number of your PC aren't shown under 'System Information' (System Manufacturer and System Model) at the top of the report, also include that information in your post. Or, if you built your system or it was put together locally for you, include the manufacturer and exact model number of your motherboard.
