I heard a while back that Cyan and Mandalay Pictures had a deal to do a Myst miniseries for the Sci-Fi channel. I also understand it was cnacelled. Now I am hearing rumors that the 4th and 5th books in the series have also been cancelled.

I would like to know the opinions of the Miller's on these projects.

The storylines are so original, and so in-depth, and not to mention beautiful as I am sure you will all agree with me.

In the history of Video Gaming, NO game has ventured into such a rich and lavish world of intrigue. Not to mention a story that can be told and viewed by families of all ages - no violence, no killing, no butchering, no foul language.

Just drop a stranger into a land and watch them explore and wonder at the world about them - the basics of life itself Smile

I say they bring back these projects - if they can create INCREDIBLE games/worlds, and they can create INCREDIBLE books with deep and rich stories - make more books, make that miniseries - and make it how you want to make it, just like you have with the legends of Myst.

PS - That Myst book that you released in paperback containg all three books - MAKE IT IN HARDCOVER!!! Smile

Putting any of the Myst books in hardcover is a decision of the publisher (Hyperion), not Cyan, and given how long Cyan had been pushing for a re-print of the novels in any form, they weren't going to press their luck by asking for a hardcover version Wink.

I've heard no rumors that books 4 and 5 have been canceled. However, they have been shelved indefinitely until they have the time necessary to devote to them. There's an excerpt from the 4th book, The Book of Marrim, available in both the European Collector's Edition of Myst V and the soundtrack release for the same game.

I don't think a miniseries or movie is likely at this point, though. The problem Cyan often encounters when it allows others to adapt Myst to another medium is that the adapters don't "get" the games and don't pay any attention to Cyan's requests for changes. I know this was the reason that a comic book series from Dark Horse was canceled in 1997, and it's likely that either a similar issue or simple funding problems got in the way of completing the miniseries. At present, Cyan has enough on its plate just trying to stay in production in the gaming industry, and all of their efforts are currently focused on bringing back their latest game, Uru, in its intended online format, so I don't think books or movies are going to have much development time at the moment.

Wow; this is the first I have heard of a Uru continuation being worked on by Cyan Worlds. Al, where do you advise we go online to keep up with & read latest news on this subject? Probably not here, right?

The Uru forums here at Ubi.com tend to carry the most important news about Uru, though UruObsession.com is the better place to go for Uru-related shenanigans.

If you want to join in on the fun, you can download and install Until Uru and hang out in the Cavern until thing get rolling again officially (assuming they get the funding to continue... it's kind of up in the air at the moment). All you need is a copy of Uru or Uru Complete Chronicles.

Al,

Thanks for your reply. As usual, I have to ask... is any of the above applicable to a Mac? I do have Uru CC, but can only play it on my wife's Windoze machine. An ongoing online philander on her computer is out of the question for me... Sad Eyes

UU is not Mac compatible, though the rumor mill is churning out loads of Mac-related port thoughts on a revived Uru Live since Cyan's most recent game (EoA) was Mac-compatible and runs on an updated version of the Uru engine. All is not lost for the future, but for now, we're both gonna have to seal our wives' computers I'm afraid Wink.
