I have also been wondering about this for the past few years... Are **any** of the devices in the Myst games based on real-life devices? I see this as a serious question, and feel it deserves SERIOUS answers - not off-the-cuff, glib comments. --Artúr

Ok, ok, here's one... the devices in Myst are "inventions" on paper, in graphics, whatever. There is no reason to believe that any of them have been adopted from real life. Not to say that a "real life" machine could not be made from a Myst idea, just that the idea didn't come from a real machine. Certainly the laws of physics were (usually) considered when those constructs were designed.
